Mike the Metal Ed Posted 3 August 2013 Posted 3 August 2013 this first game of the season as the same feel about it as the start of the 2001 campaign when we got beat 5 0 at home by bolton! We were 4-0 down at half time then.

Kitchandro Posted 3 August 2013 Posted 3 August 2013 That was a bit of a nightmare. Zak being stretchered off was the last thing we needed, sounded nasty, hope he's alright. The whole look of the starting line-up screams midtable. The strikers aren't particularly great at holding it up and are clearly isolated. Drinkwater is not a satisfactory link between them and the midfield. Oh how we could do with a player like Knockaert in the squad now. Like I said last week, too many holes in the squad, too many weaknesses.

No idea what game I'm thinking of then! Maybe when we lost 2-0 to Charlton in Taylor's final game. It was an absolute shambles, only a month or so after the Bolton debacle.

Tuna Posted 3 August 2013 Posted 3 August 2013 No idea what game I'm thinking of then! Charlton game was I think end of September when Taylor got fired. Charlton had Steve Brown sent off about 30 minutes in and we still went on to lose 2-0!

The formation isn't necessarily the problem, but the players he's picking in it is. Konchesky isn't a wing back, he's a slow full back, yet Schlupp, who's got wing back written all over him, is on the bench. Drinkwater is not the kind of player you play behind the front 2, which you need with this formation. He's not positive or creative enough, Knockaert needs to play there. Our centre backs Morgan aside are not very good regardless of what formation we're playing. If De Laet was playing normal full back he'd be another weakness, but he's often our most dangerous player going forward.

As amazing as Kasper is, if selling him would of allowed us to bring in another player or 2 we should of sold him. Our central midfield has been terrible for the last decade, why can no manager see this and improve it?
