Finnegan Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 I'm not suggesting they should have "gone for it", I'm saying there's a difference between playing conservatively and parking the bus.
Webbo Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 And if they don't then they haven't, and it's silly to say they've worked at half time. Was at Bolton so didn't see this. Assuming it was one way traffic which Chelsea happened to get away with again. Well obviously, time will tell but I'd say Chelsea have a slight advantage so it's certainly not a bad tactic.
Dan Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 Why are Chelsea favourites? If there were no away goals I'd agree but if Atletico get one goal then they're probably going through IMO. I completely agree with Finners about Chelsea. If Leicester went away to Atletico and parked the bus I'd understand (I'll never ever promote it as what I'd like to see though even in those circumstances) but this is a side that have thrown absolutely millions at their side for years. I'm struggling to have any respect for a side who parks the bus when they've spent the kind of money you'd expect with any competency would be as strong as the likes of Bayern. I know I didn't see it last night but I've seen them do it enough times to know what they've most likely done. Stats can be misleading too. Leicester had over 30 shots against Yeovil and we were shit. I really, really hope Atletico do this and win the double. Well obviously, time will tell but I'd say Chelsea have a slight advantage so it's certainly not a bad tactic. Struggling to see how they have an advantage personally.
Grandad. Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 Well IF Chelsea progress to the Final then they have done the right thing, clearly. Atletico never broke down Chelsea last night, simple as that and now Chelsea have home advantage where they have never lost a semi-final leg I am lead to believe, so yeah I would say Chelsea are the favourites.

I'll not be convinced even if they win it to be honest pal! If Chelsea smash them in the next leg I'll just think they're even less justified in ruining the first! Have to agree to disagree. I just don't think declining the chance to score an away goal is ever the best approach in a format that lets you draw and qualify.
Guest MattP Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 I would rather die slowly of aids than have to suffer anymore of Joses "football". If people start turning off from this sport (as I will for the second leg) he and his ilk have a lot to answer for.

Trust me, how Liverpool have been this season I would personally hate to see us set up for that approach but then we are a team capable of scoring goals from all sources and by all means of football, ask yourself can Chelsea? From all the millions can they cut a team apart, can they hit a team on the counter and can they be a dominant attacking force with the players the currently have? I don't think they can. With what they have available I think Mourinho got it spot on and to me that is good management, to go away from home without your top scorers and keep the game goalless is not a bad thing, with Hazard and Eto'o to come back in, I fully expect Chelsea to win the tie now.

One Legged Beaver Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 May not have been the best spectacle in the world but I can't see a lot wrong with what Chelsea did, if they had had a bit of a go at Atletico without their two danger men they could well be going back to Stamford Bridge a few goals down.
Guest MattP Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 Does anyone genuinely believe an English club can win the Champions league anymore in a way that isn't parking the bus? Do we have anyone in our league that good or have we fell so far behind the top sides now this is the only way to do it?

Considering just one slip up for Chelsea (and they are capable of it) means they could need two goals, I fail to see how this gives them any advantage. Are they going to park the bus again at home? To be fair I wouldn't rule it out knowing Mourinho, but if they don't they'll be far more suspect at the back. What they've done in previous Semi finals has zero bearing on this game.

Webbo Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 Our fans are going to very disappointed next season if they think we're going to stay up playing gung ho football. Managers have to play to their strengths.
Dan Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 How is Leicester in the Premier League next season remotely comparable to Chelsea in any competition? For the amount of money Chelsea spend they should be able to put nearly anyone on the back foot and they're dull as dishwater.
Guest MattP Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 Our fans are going to very disappointed next season if they think we're going to stay up playing gung ho football. Managers have to play to their strengths. Comparing us to a team that has had hundreds of millions on it is wrong. Chelsea shutting up at Atletico would be like us shutting up shop at Birmingham.

Dan Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 Atletico are top of a league that we're always told is much better than ours. Which is laughable really as Chelsea should have the resources/competency about them to be better than them. It'll all be sorted in the summer when they nab Diego Costa anyway.

Managers have to play to their strengths. We already press and counter very well (at least, we do when Vardy plays) I'd be hugely surprised if we're any different next year.

Do we have anyone in our league that good or have we fell so far behind the top sides now this is the only way to do it? Liverpool could beat any team in the world at the minute, I genuinely believe that with our style of football, we play the game with the mentality "if they score 1, then we will score 2" approach, in the League that is all well and good, you have other games after to make up for the mistakes. You don't in the Champions League, if Chelsea had lost 2 or 3-0 last night, then that would be pretty much game over, you could even say season over. As even beating us in the Premier League on Sunday would still keep them 2 points behind. Anyway, as good as I think Liverpool are at the minute, I think we will struggle in the Champions League as we only have one way of playing football and that is to attack, we can't set up any other way. We will kill teams on the counter attacks, but if we play teams with quality (which we obviously will) who play like that then I expect us to concede a few goals. This game on Tuesday is all about ifs and maybes at the minute, if Atletico score then Chelsea will need two, Atletico only need to score one to go through.. I'll stand corrected if Chelsea don't win but I think they will find away through. A dubious Hazard penalty is what I can see happening. You seem to forget Chelsea did pretty much the same thing last night as they did v PSG, people just didn't question Mourinho's style because they got the all important away goal, Mourinho played that game without a recognised striker but they won what some will say a dodgy penalty and lost 3-1. PSG just managed to do what Atletico couldn't do and break Chelsea down. And that is why they are criticised. Oh of course, Mourinho made a monumental **** up in not buying a striker this season, if he had they would have already have pretty much won the League already if they had a quality striker. Honestly think them not having a world class striker has cost them around 7-9 points this season. West Ham at home, Man United away, Arsenal away should have all been wins and a few others.
Finnegan Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 I'm pretty sure Bayern and Real (with Ronny fit) would both hump Liverpool at the moment. I'd agree you probably shouldn't be afraid of anyone on current form, though. Being that high on confidence and zeal is immensely dangerous to face.

I actually agree with Albert that Liverpool are the best team in world football on current form. Will be interesting to see how Rodgers pads the squad to allow them to compete in Europe and the PL next year. I think it's fair to say they have benefitted from having solely the league to concentrate on this season.

Look up hyperbole in the dictionary, 'Col', he's obviously not being literal. Nor is he being particularly revolutionary in stating an objection to excessively negative football. As for complaining that someone else is posting drivel, good lord, I'd just keep my head down on that issue if I were you, 'Col.'
Corky Posted 23 April 2014 Posted 23 April 2014 For a clearly intelligent bloke you don't half post some garbage. Have a word with yourself. It's boring for a neutral. Yes, he might be a tactical genius and a wonderful character, but his football was dull to watch. I'm sure that, if we on TV in 2007/08 most weeks people would've turned us off and not bothered to tune in. Don't be so precious that someone doesn't see what you do.
