Guest Bilo Posted 25 September 2013 Posted 25 September 2013 This has been common knowledge for years in the Arab world, particularly in the UAE. The rapid growth of these tiny nations has been built on the backs of impoverished migrant workers, the world should take far more of a stand against it in my opinion. This is yet another reason why Qatar is completely and utterly undeserving of the honour of hosting the biggest sporting event on the calendar.
Guest MattP Posted 25 September 2013 Posted 25 September 2013 Saw it all when I was in Dubai, do people actually not know this is happening?
nlukka Posted 25 September 2013 Posted 25 September 2013 This happens all across the Middle East; they're flooded with cheap labour from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the Philippines to name just a few. Appalling conditions that would make you think twice about awarding the World Cup to Qatar, but then again with Sepp Blatter's money-men what else should we expect?
Meltonfossefox Posted 25 September 2013 Posted 25 September 2013 The fact it has ever been considered for the World Cup is fvcking stupid anyway. So many reasons why it shouldn't be there
Guest Bilo Posted 25 September 2013 Posted 25 September 2013 Honestly think we should boycott it. It'd only take a handful of major nations threatening to boycott it and FIFA would have to rethink. The big associations carry the power, like it or not.

Guest Bilo Posted 25 September 2013 Posted 25 September 2013 Can we at least wait until we fail to qualify before we boycott. It does need to happen in all seriousness. FIFA have become a law unto themselves. I wouldn't completely rule it out either, it's unlikely the big clubs and therefore associations will like the idea of effectively suspending their mid season because Qatar are unable to fulfil their promises.

Guest Bilo Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 I really hope we do boycott it. Even if it was just us No way will England do it alone, it'd be the most ethical thing to do but it would be the FA effectively cutting its nose off to spite its face. We'd probably do it if part of a broader 'coalition' for want of a better phrase though, the Spanish, Dutch and Australian FAs in particular were not impressed one bit at the time of it being awarded to Qatar. You can probably add a few more European associations now that every major league in Europe looks like being shunted around to accommodate this farce.

Agree completely. If countries like Germany, Spain, Brazil etc said enough is enough and formed a breakaway organisation then FIFA would be finished and that would be excellent news. Sadly I don't expect anyone to have the courage to do it. The world cup is about the countries taking part and not about FIFA. The whole qualification process needs rethinking as well It is time there was pre-qualifying in Europe just as in Asia and Africa and the final groups should be no more than 4 teams with all matches played over a few weeks.
jonthefox Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 It's the video that kills me. And we moan about going to work.
Guest Foxin_mad Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 The leftie happy clappy Guardian probably sensationalises this a lot like they always do, that paper is utter leftie opinionated tripe. That's not to say that Qatar is as corrupt and dodgy as a nation can be. But then FIFA love corruption and dodgyness, its their lifeblood, Russia in 2018 is not exactly much better! But of course they are a dodgy Communist/Socialist country so the Guardian love them.
surrifox Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 ever since the World body fell into the hands of a bunch of third world crooks who will support the status quo to keep their troughs topped up none of this is surprising
bovril Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 If you think Russia or the Guardian is Communist I'm guessing you have never been to Russia, read the Guardian or understand the fundamentals of Communism.
loAf Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 yeah this sort of thing is relatively common out here (generally in the middle east). Its not all bad, the majority of companies are pretty good, and although wages are low for them, its much more than they would earn at home. that said their is always a proportion of companies that take the piss. Im in bahrain which is better labour law wise, but still happens, and companies will take peoples passports (illegally) and force them to work without paying them for months on end. Suicide rates are also very high amongst the labourers. It is getting better, even compared to 5 years ago when i moved here (Bahrain), but they are a long way from protection of the workforce like in the west. Also safety standards can be pretty bad on some site, that leads to alot of deaths, but until they start to see the cost of a human life being more than the punishment (usually they just pay off the family to avoid legal repercussions) then change will be very slow.
The whole world smiles Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Hahaha russia a communist country! Stick to football pal.

hackneyfox Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 It happens over here, plenty of cases of Sheiks bringing home helps (slaves) over here and them being appallingly treated. Cameron made it even harder for them to get a new job as well, but I'm sure The leftie happy clappy Guardian sensationalised that story as well.

Nothing changes the fact that these Nepalese workers are being exploited to the maximum. And that is scandalous. As for calling Russia Communist... They're probably as capitalist as China. Communism is a mere political affiliation on paper in order to get access to power these days.
