Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Giggs turns 40 today. Which Welsh wizard would you rather have whizzing down the wing? A young Ryan Giggs or Gareth Bale now? And when was Giggs at his peak? Normally players peak around 28 years old but is this true of Giggs?
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Probably Bale, the sport has changed a lot since Giggs' pomp. Bale as an athlete is just a monster. That said, I can't imagine Bale transforming and reinventing himself a la Giggs.
Beliall Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 i think giggs is better now than ever. id have a 40 year old giggs than a bale any day. but i dont rate bale really
Haydos Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 i think giggs is better now than ever. id have a 40 year old giggs than a bale any day. but i dont rate bale really Don't be silly. Finners is right, I think Bale is more talented but obviously it would be incredible if he emulated Giggs if you're talking about longevity and dedication.

Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 I honestly don't understand how anyone can not rate Bale, really, that's just a strange stance to take. I'm not claiming he's in Ronaldo or Messi's league but he's clearly exceptional. The consistency with which he's scored vital, impressive goals over the last couple of years is ridiculous. Comfortably in the RVP, Suarez class for me.

I have watched Giggs whole career and he's shown more talent consistently than Bale has. Besides I think Finners was talking about him as an athlete. His physicality, I assume...
Jimothy Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 I just can't agree with you. I have watched Giggs whole career and he's shown more talent consistently than Bale has. Besides I think Finners was talking about him as an athlete. His physicality, I assume... Surely the only way to achieve consistency is to have some form of longevity. Giggs has been playing 20 years, Bale has been playing for about 5, and for the first couple of them he was at left back. Bale has been consistently good for the last couple of years in his forward role, he obviously hasn't been as consistent as long as Giggs, he's not been playing as long. You can't compare their consistency until Bale has had a career almost as long as Giggs, because you giving Giggs points in an area where Bale has had no chance to score points yet.
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Bale started his career as a left back didn't he? By a la Giggs I meant adapting to play a creative, deeper role when his brain became quicker than his legs.
Alexikokopops Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 By a la Giggs I meant adapting to play a creative, deeper role when his brain became quicker than his legs. If only Giggs had chosen to play for England....
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Being a winger of that caliber largely is about being an athlete. If Ronaldo wasn't the athlete he is nobody would even mention him in the same sentence as Messi. That's not to say he isn't also terrific with a ball, as is Bale, but their sheer pace and stamina set them above. People forget that, as a winger, that's what made Giggs stand out at a young age. But looking back, his dribbling and pace were very simple and I don't think they'd stand up so much in the modern game. Someone like Sergio Ramos would just run over him. I'd take Giggs as an AMC / deep lying forward over Bale but that's not what was asked. If only Giggs had chosen to play for England.... U wanna go marsh?
Beliall Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 bales good, but theres something, i just dont think hes as good as peaopl say all the time, and 87 million? fvck off, whats messi worth then? or ronaldo?
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Forget the money, the money isn't his fault. No footballer is worth the GDP of a small country.

Besides I think Finners was talking about him as an athlete. His physicality, I assume... I agree, but I think Bale is better now. It's hard to comare players from different eras but Bale's influence in games at Spurs made them a one man team and now his recent performances at Real kind of back that up. Did Giggs ever have the same effect at Utd (genuinely, I obviously don't watch Man Utd a lot and despite seeing highlights of a lot of big players don't get to see them that much)? Like I said, if Bale can replicate this and perform for another 10 years then I guess their careers can be compared but it's not possible to do that unless you just go on pure talent (which I think Bale wins). Whether that is down more to his athleticism than footballing ability is another matter, if he's this effective then he is that good.
Fox92 Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Giggs. Great player in his day, and on his day can still influence games. A great professional too, I can't imagine Bale will be playing at 40, especially for one of the biggest clubs in the World.
The Blur Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 I would say that Bale is superior than Giggs in many categories such as shooting and pace. They are equals in dribbling. Not sure about passing and crossing but Giggs excel in a great Man Utd side, if Giggs played in same Spurs side as Bale, I can't see him having the same impact.
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Fox92 in "thinks the guy from before his time is better than the present" shock.

And when was Giggs at his peak? Normally players peak around 28 years old but is this true of Giggs? Are they both allowed to wear the number 11 shirt? Are they depriving any other squad members of their right to that shirt? Tough choice but I'd go for Bale now.

notnow john Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Giggs no doubt. What has Bale won compared to Giggs at that age, nothing. Giggs has great balance,Bale struggles to stay upright in the penalty area!
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Giggs no doubt. What has Bale won compared to Giggs at that age, nothing. Giggs has great balance,Bale struggles to stay upright in the penalty area! I'm sorry but I hate arguments like that. Giggs was playing for United, of course he's won more than most players. It's a team game. Don't get me wrong, I love Giggs, one of my favourite ever players. I also accept it's much of a muchness, but Giggs'medal haul is irrelevant. ... So is how many times they've been in the PFA team of the year.
BoneDog Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Giggs. Bale's a bit cheesy with his face and that heart thing he does.
