davieG Posted 3 December 2013 Posted 3 December 2013 Men and women's brains are wired in completely different ways which may explain why the sexes excel at certain tasks, brain scans reveal. US researchers at the University of Pennsylvania scanned the brains of nearly 1,000 men, women, boys and girls and found striking differences. The "connectome maps" reveal the differences between the male brain (seen in blue) and the female brain (orange) Male brains are wired front to back, with few connections bridging the two hemispheres. In females, the connections criss-cross between left and right. These differences might explain why men, in general, tend to be better at learning and performing a single task, like cycling or navigating, whereas women are more equipped for multitasking, say the researchers in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The same volunteers were asked to perform a series of cognitive tests, and the results appeared to support this notion. But experts have questioned whether it can be that simple. In the study, women scored well on attention, word and face memory, and social cognition, while men performed better on spatial processing and sensori-motor speed. Study author Dr Ruben Gur said: "It's quite striking how complementary the brains of women and men really are. "Detailed connectome maps of the brain will not only help us better understand the differences between how men and women think, but it will also give us more insight into the roots of neurological disorders, which are often sex related." Prof Heidi Johansen-Berg, a UK expert in neuroscience at the University of Oxford, said the brain was too complex an organ to be able to make broad generalisations. "We know that there is no such thing as 'hard wiring' when it comes to brain connections. Connections can change throughout life, in response to experience and learning. "Often, sophisticated mathematical approaches are used to analyse and describe these brain networks. These methods can be useful to identify differences between groups, but it is often challenging to interpret those differences in biological terms."

Jon the Hat Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 It woudn't be a great surprise given the different role men and women have played in society over millions of years.
Zingari Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 It woudn't be a great surprise given the different role men and women have played in society over millions of years. maybe they've played different roles precisely because they are different ? (i think millions of years might be stretching it a bit too)

Guest MattP Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 How does this threaten total equality? Go out to a feminist and say men brains able them to perform tasks better than woman and see the reaction you get.

Guest MattP Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 How does this threaten total equality? Just realised I didn't answer the question. In short, it shows we aren't equal.
Mark_w Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Just realised I didn't answer the question. In short, it shows we aren't equal. It shows that we aren't the same, that's not the same as showing we aren't equal. I think it's pretty obvious that men and women aren't exactly the same biologically but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have equal rights and opportunities does it? This doesn't show that one is inferior, it doesn't even really suggest that men and women should be treated differently. So why would anyone have a problem with it?

I think it's pretty obvious that men and women aren't exactly the same biologically but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have equal rights and opportunities does it? It's the way the feminists put the arguments across that is becomes unbearable, they generally can't accept we aren't the same, you can. They can't accept a woman will never win the F1 championship or the Heavyweight boxing title. It's those who we seem to cater for in this day and age when we shun World Class sportsman to get average women into Sports Personality of the Years awards, the farcial situation of license payers money to pay for coverage of Womens World Cups when no one is even watching. We have to put up with bollocks like this because of the equality drive and they actually manage to get away with it. http://metro.co.uk/2013/07/12/hope-powell-england-ladies-could-beat-roy-hodgsons-men-3880475/ Should they be treated equal? That's a matter of opinion, are they equal? No.

Guest MattP Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 They couldn't beat your average pub side. I thought it was a joke when she said it but you can see these sort of people actually genuinely believe it.
MooseBreath Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Currently in the process of putting together a law suit against my employer for stress and resultant depression caused by them insisting I perform the same mental tasks as women despite my brain obviously not being capable of performing to the same standard. Compensation here we come you phooking beauty

I agree with you to some extent, but that's really just because I don't think you should every be taking up sport because you want to be on TV or to win a sports personality award or earn ridiculous amounts of money. As long as women are free and encouraged to get involved in these sports it really doesn't bother me whether they're on TV or not. But what I do have a problem with is the way females are treated when it comes to sport in the education system. Having just left school, I can tell you that (at least a few years ago) girls were still made to do shitty 'sports' like dance while we got to play football/cricket/etc. That's completely unfair and I do have a problem with that.

Don't see anything wrong with that at all? Was it a mixed class? If so it would be dangerous to mix the two. Most girls don't even want to play these sports despite what the Hope Powells of the World tell you and most boys I would hope don't want to prance around in a leotard instead of padding up or getting his boots on. I like the fact girls and boys are different and generally do different things, of course you'll get the odd oddity like Hope Powell, Tom Daley, Louis Smith, Amelie Mouresmo etc but I think trying to make us all the same makes it a lot more boring.

It was a mixed class and I'm not suggesting that we should have been doing the sports together. But I'm fairly sure that most of the girls in that class would have preferred football to dance, they were forced to do certain sports just because that's what girls did at my old school. It's completely unfair to force girls to do the shit sports (Unless they actually want to for some bizarre reason).

Not if it's women trying to do the map reading! And as for producing anything that can help anyone to understand the female brain - you're having a fvckin laff!

Aren't some boys being forced to do football and cricket when they'd prefer not to. I was not only forced to play rugby, our school did indulge in football but I was always forced to be the hooker. Long distance running was also compulsory.
