Formation IF we get promoted

Man City play 4-4-2 pretty effectively. Not even nearly suggesting that we're on the same level as them, but it at least shows that it can be done. If that's our strongest formation then why not stick to it?

The reason Man City play it effectively is because of Yaya Toure & Fernandinho, both who are very good at dribbling, tackling, shooting, passing etc.

I do agree with what you said, we should see how we cope in the first few games with a 4-4-2. Why fix something that isn't broken?

Well this season it seems that we go with a 442 when attacking, and then nugent drops back into a 451 or 4411. But with the energy, aggression and work rate that Vardy shows in closing down the centre backs, I don't think we should worry too much

I think fans get over-obsessed with formations. This is probably because it’s basically the only tactic any of us were ever given in our school teams!

In effect, it doesn’t really make a great deal of difference. The only key question (which all modern formations are based around) is whether you play with either 2 or 3 central midfield players, at the expense of a striker.  Everything else is just waffle.

4-4-2 with Nugent dropping deep, is different to 4-4-2 with Wood and Vardy both playing as out-and-out strikers.

Often, the only difference in 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 is how far up the pitch the wingers stand at goal kicks.

And, is 3-5-2 actually any different to 5-3-2? It’s only a question of whether your full-backs are either chiefly attack-minded (3-5-2) or defence-minded (5-3-2)?

What’s important is having players who can read the game well and drop deep or push forward as each situation requires (eg Nugent and King).

Spot on. I'd just like to add that playing players where they are comfortable and, usually, therefore effective.

4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1, effectively an attacking 4-5-1. We've been playing 4-4-1-1 all season anyway with Nugent behind Vardy so we could comfortably slot into a 4-2-3-1 next season. I wouldn't even entertain anything else.

Sorted then I'm happy if everyone else is?

I just think that every time we've played a 4-5-1/4-3-3 with 3 out and out centre midfielders, it hasn't worked. 3-5-2 was horrific in pre season/early season.

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Ladies and gentleman, Leicester will be playing Four-Four ****ing Two.

Was discussing this with my best mate over beer and burgers yesterday afternoon.

The team are flying and playing wonderfully well, despite us playing what many think is a pretty outdated 4-4-2. It's a very orthodox 4-4-2 as well with two out and out wingers. So, if we do go up, do we stick with this formation and see where it gets us or would this be a too big a risk seeing as most Premier League sides play a variant of 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. Teams that play a straightforward 4-4-2 tend to get found out pretty quickly and often struggle so what do we go with?

My feeling is that we go with the current formation but my mate thinks we should start with a 4-3-3 as we'd be too open otherwise.

I think your mate is right.

A flat 4-4-2 is the best formation for the players we currently have at the club. And because we have good players AND they are confident, its worked.

But it does leave a team exposed, especially to good teams that pack their midfield, or play with an extra man up top.

At fear of wreaking the wrath of the masses, this is my biggest concern about Pearson in the Premiership. When he's tried to alter the teams tactics, its rarely worked particularly well. Last season, for instance, when we played the 4-3-3 with Harry Kane out wide and Wood up top, we were absolute pants.

Whether Pearson will change things around if we go up, and whether he will sign personnel to do so, remains to be seen. But a flat 4-4-2 is a pretty outdated system, very few Prem sides utilise it and I think we'd struggle if we can't change our system against different opposition.

It was because of Nigel that Hull are where they are now. Yes.

What! So Bruce didn't sign Shane Long, Curtis Davies, Tom Huddlestone and Jelavic? And Bruce didn't change the playing system last season to 'best-fit' his players?

Steve Bruce is an excellent manager IMO. He's taken what Pearson did and improved Hull immensely.
