Corky Posted 19 March 2014 Posted 19 March 2014 No, over 38 games I don't think we'd have enough quality (would GTF, Phillips and Hammond really offer a great deal coming from the bench at the top level?) We'd give it a real go but defensively I think we'd struggle, midfield would be ok and strikers not sure about.
Torquemada Posted 19 March 2014 Posted 19 March 2014 Foundations laid by our very own Nigel. It's a nice thought but in reality the team Pearson left behind has very little in common with Hull City's present side.
AnotherShitSeason Posted 19 March 2014 Posted 19 March 2014 I think we stand a good chance of winning the Prem next year. I've placed my bets already. I like your style.
LCCFox96 Posted 19 March 2014 Posted 19 March 2014 It's a nice thought but in reality the team Pearson left behind has very little in common with Hull City's present side. That's not the team that Hull got promoted with though. The foundations were laid by Nigel but Steve Bruce has done very well taking it to the next level. Jelavic and Long will keep them going for another season or so now. And Huddlestone - we need a solid centre mid signing like that if we go up.
Deucalion Posted 19 March 2014 Posted 19 March 2014 I think our current squad would have a fair chance to stay up, but with nothing guaranteed. Much as I love our current squad, some favourites might move on or be bit-part players if we are promoted. It is sad, but it is football and to be in the division the season after next we need to be ruthless. Anyone remember the contribution Euan Roberts made to our promotion in 94, only to be a bit part player in the PL? With a few well planned signings, I am fairly confident of a top 10 finish.
Guest MattP Posted 19 March 2014 Posted 19 March 2014 We'd stand a great chance, we are on course for 100pts which only Reading and Newcastle achieved, they both finished mid table ish in far stronger Premier League's than the one of today. Not to mention our young players should yet again improve on this season being a year older which is a fantastic thought given the form of Moore, James, Drinkwater, Vardy (relative young in league football terms) Knocky and Mahrez. I recognise the point of Fulham's squad but that squad in it's prime would stay up, they haven't this year due to them being either over the hill or disinterested and having about 4 different managers over the course of the season. That Fulham squad on paper certainly isnt superior to the Palace squad and they are making more than a fight of it. Make no mistake about it, most of this side will be starting next season and yet again, they'll surprise a few people. The Reading and Cardiff sides of the last two seasons aren't great comparisons, Reading were a very old side who went up, did nothing transfer wise and took the money to rebuild later, Cardiff have had the most shambolic off the field of any club I can remember, let's not forget they were 17th when Malkay was sacked and were considered to have had a very hard start to the season in terms of a fixture list. That said, I think we'll need a striker, centre back and left back minimum, but I wouldn't write this squad off totally if we didn't. There would be two from this division I'd expect to finish above for a start.

suffolk fox Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 No, we need to strengthen all over the park. For me the thing that sets us about other teams is our midfield, I think we need reinforcement up front and at the back, and more options in midfield. Good post. Please people please take your blue tinted specs off for one minute. There is a gulf in class between the Premiership and Championship a huge gulf. I want us to do well in the premiership, when we get there but we do need to strenghen all over in key areas. People mentioning Hull don't forget they have signed two quality strikers, a quality midfielder in Huddlestone and Bruce is a good manager at Premiership level. Same goes with Pulis at Palace, who may keep them up. Our manager has never managed in the premiership before so next season, could be interesting.

Walsh has scouted for Chelsea bringing Drogba to the club so knows the quality we need to bring in. If he can find us another player or two of his ability we'll be fine.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 My thoughts about next season seem to oscillate between us having the moment of winning the league this year and doing a Norwich/Southampton and staying up comfortably in our first season. OR us just getting relegated. My main concern is that historically under pearson we've generally played one of two styles: - Fast, pressing, positive (This season, first half of last season, League 1 season) - Hustle and bustle, long ball, huff and puff, grind it out (Season back in the Championship, the BAD run last season) We're clearly at our best when we play our current style. And it'll be a good style for the PL too. I just hope NP's brave enough/has the personnel to do so again next season in the top flight. He could revert to his cautious style and have us play with much less drive, ambition and positivity, fearing the higher quality of the opposition. I just think that would reduce our threat whilst also inviting pressure. Of course there's a need, particularly in the PL, to tailor our approach to the opposition, and being able to play with our current style against opponents that we have a realistic chance of beating and then having a more pragmatic approach against the big boys would be advantageous. And they're not mutually exclusive either. In Nige We Trust (and Steve Walsh!)
Chilwell_Fox Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 I don't think we would have the necessary premier league experienced players to rely on this years squad. This squad took a couple of years to get used to the championship!
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 Even the shittiest of teams are littered with good players in the Prem... Fulham have been shite in that league with a squad containing: Darren Bent, Berbatov, Scott Parker, Sidwell, Rodallega, Richardson, Heitinga, Riise, Holtby... amongst others. Work ethic, squad moral can keep you hanging in there for only so long. We are going to need some quality players adding to the squad make no mistake about that. I think we are quite a light weight team and when we come up against prem teams they all seem huge, we'll need to add a bit of that. I couldn't agree more, we will need some real quality players, who will fit well into our squad.

Babylon Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 You are genuinely expecting him to find two players of DROGBA'S ability? He was given credit for signing him... But let's be honest, the whole of bloody Europe knew about Drogba anyway!

You write this in agreement of the view that we will need a complete overhaul, yet you support that view by quoting just 3 key additions that have made the essential difference to the Hull squad. That argument doesn't stack up. I believe we have a good core that only needs about 4 quality additions (plus a goalie,of course, as we have effectively only one at the moment). I also disagree that there is a gulf in class between Prem and Championship. In the Prem there is a gulf between top 6 and the rest, and similarly in the Championship, but I see no reason or evidence to believe that there's much of a gap between lower Prem and higher Champ teams,.
Bryn Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 If only Huddlestone had stayed at Spurs another year btw, he'd be ****ing magnif for us. Him sitting deep, sitting in front of the back four, keeping the ball ticking over, James and Drinkwater with freedom to play in front of him. I'd fancy our chances are dominating the possession stats.

Bruce's 2013/14 signings All new signings except for Elmohamady who was on loan. Eight of those listed are now regular first team members. A good strong team who could still go down if they don't get a couple of more wins. Four new signings by Leicester may not be enough...
