Perspective - RIP Roger Evans

Leicester City fans and players have expressed sorrow at the death of a supporter from a suspected heart attack at King Power Stadium.

Roger Evans, 70, was taken ill 25 minutes before the match between City and Brighton kicked off on Tuesday.

Mr Evans, from Northamptonshire, was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he was pronounced dead.

On Twitter, City defender Ritchie de Laet, wrote: "Just heard the terrible news. Sorry to hear. My best wishes to the family of Roger Evans."

Some fans have called for a minute's applause in memory of Mr Evans at Leicester City's next home game, against QPR on April 19.

LeicesterFC FanPage posted: "RIP Roger Evans. Sad to hear such a terrible thing. Best wishes to family and friends.

"Minute's applauding at home against QPR please."

Leicester City ambassador Alan Birchenall said: "I have sent the regards of the manager, the chairman, the chief executive and everyone at the club to his family.

"It is a terrible tragedy that Mr Evans came to watch and support his boys in their hour of glory and he passed away.

"We knew someone had fallen ill at the game but didn't find out until later that he had died.

"It puts the football into perspective. All we can do is pass on our heartfelt condolences to his family at this sad time."

Club medical staff went to the aid of Mr Evans after he collapsed in the East Stand concourse at about 7.25pm. East Midland Ambulance Service said a crew was on the scene within a minute.

Joseph Doyle saw the paramedics working on Mr Evans.

He said: "I'd just come through the turnstiles and stewards were diverting people in a different direction.

"I saw a man with grey hair on the ground with paramedics giving him CPR.

"I didn't want to watch and just walked on but I could tell it wasn't good.

"There were a few tears in eyes. It was horrific to see and just before he would have been in high spirits like the rest of us because we'd been promoted."

A spokesman for Leicester City said: "Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a member of the Leicester City family.

"Our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with Roger's family at this sad time."

I think it depends on the type of person he was and the preference of his family. Personally if it was me, and in a footballing environment, I would prefer applause. Either way, I hope the club do something.

I'm probably in the minority but personally I think the minutes silences / applause for city fans shouldn't be something the club get involved with all the time. I'm sure we are losing city fans all the time for various reasons and singling certain people out doesn't seem quite right.

I'd prefer something perhaps at the end of each season dedicated to fans / people connected with the club who have passed away that year, even if it's something on the screens. So all families are able to see the fans / club give their respects at the ground if they wish to.

I'd go with that they could have their names scrolled through the screens with each associated family allowed say 5 messages of condolences free.

I think it's a bit different when the person has died inside the ground just before a match. I'd be surprised if we don't hold a minutes applause/silence.

I really do like that idea. But I think Roger's case is very different. He collapsed at the stadium, while watching our team and witnessed by other fans who I'm sure would really like to pay their respects to him. Everyone should return from a football match, its tragic.

Appreciate the circumstances, the death of a loved one is tragic for all families though, hence why it feels wrong to me to say x should have one and y shouldn't.

Anyway, this thread is about Roger so I think we should end it there, we can have a discussion about it another time perhaps and suggest it the club through the fans group if people think it's a good idea.

Apologies to Rogers family reading this thread for derailing it somewhat.

We talk about plastic fans, but all we are really doing is living in a plastic world of our own on the site.

This tragedy really brings home the reality, and I guess we should all reflect on who, and what we all really are as people.

May he" Rest  in Peace", and my sympathies go out to all his family and friends.

God bless you.

So sorry to hear this. Take some comfort from knowing he died in a place he loved. The club definitely need to get something organised for this.

I am Roger Evans step son and i have only joined the Foxes to pass on my thanks to all the fans who have blogged on the forum passing on their kind words and support.  Rogers grandson Jamie's words on the blog I'm sure moved you all.

Jamie will be sitting in his Granddads Seat for the QPR match.  A tribute of clapping  would be preferred on the day but what would be even better would be a verse for Roger of " I did it my way" by Frank Sinatra whilst clapping. (a song which he loved). The tune will be played at his funeral. Date TBC.

Foxes i will leave this in your capable hands.

Foxes, again thank you all and hope you have a great season next year.

Would be a really nice tribute that. Has anyone from the club been in contact with your family?

Hi Larry,

On the radio last night Alan Birchenall said the club had sent a letter Thursday afternoon.  I have not heard whether or not it has been received yet.

City fan Roger Evans died as he was about to watch the football team he loved.

The grieving partner of Roger, 70, who collapsed of a suspected heart attack before City's clash with Brighton on Tuesday, said he was delighted the Foxes had gained promotion to the Premier League.

Ms Dawn Dix, who had been with Roger for 40 years, said: "He was so happy that his team had been promoted.

"He has been going to Leicester games for donkey's years and been with them through thick and thin.

"He was not a fair weather supporter. He was there when they were not winning so many games.

"Roger was over the moon his team were going to the Premier League."

Fellow fan Jim French told how he was with Roger when he collapsed.

He was suddenly taken ill at about 7.25pm in the East Stand concourse. He was rushed to Leicester Royal Infirmary, but died later.

Jim, 70, of Desborough, Northants, said: "I had just popped to the loo before we went to get to our seats.

"I came out and Roger was propped up against a wall, then he just went.

"He was on the floor, then the paramedics and others rushed to his aid. It was a terrible thing to see. I know the medical people did everything to save my mate.

"We have been going to home games for 20 years and I will go to the matches for the rest of the season, but I don't think I will go next season because it will not be the same without Roger.

"We were laughing and joking about how many goals Manchester City would put past us. Roger was a great fun to be with."

Ms Dix, 69, of Desborough, said: "My grandson, Jamie, is to take Roger's seat at the QPR game as a mark of respect.

"It is what Roger would have wanted – someone to take his seat to cheer his lads on.

"He was so excited about the prospect of seeing Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal at the King Power Stadium.

"It is so cruel for him to have been taken from us like this and at such a time.

"He was a lovely man who had time for everybody. He was the life and soul of the party and will be very sadly missed."

Fans have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to Roger and have called for a minute's applause at the next home against QPR on April 19.
