I've just installed something onto my computer, but everytime I try to load it up it says it requires at least 768 MB of free swap file space.

What the hell is this?

Is it Porn?!?!

Laptop problems

My wife's laptop is not well. It froze up the other night, so she switched it off by holding the power button. It performed Scan disk repeatedly, so I pressed a button to cancel the next one.

We got to the log on screen, but shortly after it froze. Clock, pointer, everything.

I managed to do a proper shut down, hoping that would stop it doing a scan disk operation, but to no avail. I left it overnight, and it had frozen mid-scan at some point.

Laptop runs XP

Ideas anyone?

Rather annoying problem here guys and gals, help would be much appreciated asap.

Anyway, had a power-cut, however since getting the electrics etc. back on haven't been able to make the wireless work. Anyone else who has the BT Hub will know that it has 5 icons on the front which light up when functional. Now all 5 are lit up (including "wireless" and "data" which are the ones that are needed for wireless connection, yet I (and the other 2 computers in my household that use the wireless service) can't connect because the diagnosis is that there is no signal being recieved :S ?

Ive just got the talktalk wireless router which ive installed and is working fine.

Ive got a Windows Vista Dell Laptop.

I know windows Vista has a firewall and im also using a free AVG * anti virus thingy.

Will this be enough to stop any fcukers and hackers hacking in when im online via the router??

I also tend to switch the router off when im not using it.

Thanks for your help!!!

If your router connection is passworded, then it should be safe so that noone can use your connection. If AVG or Windows Firewall are running then no one should be able to hack into your computer.

I take it you connect to your computer via wifi as your on a laptop. Did you have to enter a "WEP" key when you were setting your connection up?

Did you enter a code when you set it up. something like for example "3E-6G-H6-0X-L3"?

Ok, so If you can't remember entering a WEP key I don't think you'll have one. You should be alright. Obviously you have a firewall on your pc so i'm guessing your all good.

You need to increase virtual memory

go to

control panel/system/advanced/performance/settings/advanced/-where it says virtual memory, click on change, and see what the intial/maximum settings are at in MB

Post that info here

Still don't work.

How long have ya waited on that screen? Because it might be installing a update or summat. Can you access system restore for the setup at the start?

got crazy problems with Vista (suprise, suprise). It keep restarting, getting to the loading screen & then nothing....it just restarts again. when it does fancy restarting, it will not recognise my external hard drives & sometimes my DVD drive is 'invisable' too. Now normally I'd just do a reinstall, but I'm worried that if i do, when it has to restart it'll do the same thing again. I've tried loading it with nothing attached (printer, ext hard drives etc) but to no avail.

Any suggestions....before i kick seven shades of shite out of it....would be welcome.

Alexikokopops. When is my Area of NG32 getting cable.

I've had cable available for years but it does provide digital TV :frusty:

Blame NTL and Telewest, they put the cables down!

I definitely blame NTL, they kept promising me for 2 years that they were in the process of upgrading and then eventually admitted that it wasn't in their plans. Annoying because I can't get freeview so I'm stuck with Sky as my only option. Still their internet for £5 as opposed to NTL's £24 was a big tempter.

We've had to spend a lot of time sorting out problems from NTL and Telewest times. They were idiots. Especially NTL and their awful customer service.
