City and set-pieces - interesting article in the LM

Saw this: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Inside-Football-column-Leicester-City-work/story-21150889-detail/story.html.

Some very interesting statistics about our failures to deal with and profit from set-pieces. Our goal difference would have been enormous if we had been better at either/both of these.

Pearson clearly has this in his sights for the next season, which is very hopeful.

A keeper who can deal with corners and makes good decisions on when to come or stay for freekicks just out of his reach would make a huge difference

As would a clogger of a CB or ST, however those two positions may have changed our overall game to be less effective

The article says that "a fraction" of our goals were from set pieces - but we scored 12 penalties? That alone is 14 per cent (we scored 83 goals)? Hardly a fraction?

In other words, wouldn't worry about free kicks. Vardy is so quick that by the time they cut him down he is already in the box.

I see where they're coming from, we need to be more varied in the Prem. We need to be better at set pieces as we will be up against powerful defenses and strike forces!

I think we're missing a strong CF who can win these battles!

12/83 is still a fraction :nuge:

So is 83/84! clearly a penalty is not a set piece in the context of the article. Its a problem for us and defending them should be something we can sort on the training ground. Whats certain is that the prem clubs will suss out a weakness if its there and exploit it.

As others have pointed out, our midfield is fairly small, as well as Vardy and Nugent not exactly having heading as their forte.

That's why I think we'll see a bigger striker come in and possibly a more robust centre mid.

Pearson has always emphasised the importance of balance so bring in the big boys!

I'm gobsmacked.

I never thought I'd see 'interesting article' and 'Leicester Mercury' in the same sentence.

We have been poor at defending set peices for years. We have to improve in this area. Imagine how good the quality of set pieces is going to be in the prem?
