deep blue Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Of course it is. You sign a player because of the performances and talent they have shown in the past. Obviously with young players it's a different story but given he's about 28 that one's straight out the window. No, you pay what you think the player is worth to YOU, and this is based on your assessment on how he will perform and what he will achieve for you.
Carlos88LCFC Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Vardy won't be going anywhere. He loves this club and obviously appreciates all that the back room staff did for him last year... You seen his interview when he won the award at the end of the season. If he was at Southampton or any other club they would have let him rot in the reserves until his contract expired and let him go. We didn't. We boosted him up after a poor first season and made him mentally tough then he came out firing. It's not like we need the cash so why sell? I see him as an important asset to the club and with the right service he could easily bag a few goals for us... His pace & movement will frighten defences in the premiership. For me he is the best striker we have (including Ulloa and Campbell) and it would be crazy to let him go! Southampton have let all their players move on. They won't be the same this year and I personally think they are going the struggle next season Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 But why would we sell for anything less than 15 million? In today's market, he could be worth 2 or 30. We won't know for a year or two what his true worth in the prem is, but why risk letting go when we simply don't need to? Players like vardy are what we are trying to sign, not get rid of.Good post
dannythefox Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Nobody knows but I'd be shocked if he left. He thinks the world of Pearson and look how he's helped his football if anyone will be a bit unhappy about us signing a new striker it will Nugent he won't be the main man anymore!
Guest Col city fan Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 We are now in the Premier League so the situation over buying and selling has changed. We wont purely be looking in profit terms for a player anymore. Now, the player's value TO US becomes the primary factor. Sure, you could sell Vardy to the Saints for 10 million quid, thus banking 8.25 million profit on the player. But, he's now worth more than 8.25 mill to Leicester City Football Club. You sell him, who are you going to replace him with? Etc. That said, every player has their value. If they want to leave and the money is too much to ignore, they will likely go. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are two case-in-points. I would suggest that it would now probably take 15 million quid for City to seriously consider parting with Vardy. A reflection therefore of how improved he has become, how important to us he is and what an excellent signing he was. Hypothesis on my part, yes. But I think I'm probably about on the money.
foxfanazer Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 This thread makes you realise what a fantastic piece of business the vardy signing was
artursteppe Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Not aimed at anyone in particular, but this is the worst thread in the history of FT. I have never read so much utter pointless tosh.
Guest ttfn Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Well no, you pay a fee for a player based on what he's done not what he might do in the future. Err what?! Do you think Manchester United paid £27 million for Luke Shaw on the back of his glittering CV or because there's a decent chance he'll turn out to be a world class left back? From the buying club's perspective a transfer fee should entirely be down to what you think the player can offer you in the future, not what's happened in the past. You obviously have to base that in part on what's happened in the past, because that's the only empirical evidence available unless you're Mystic Meg.
Robin JD Popley Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 This is the worse case of 'Chinese Whispers' this summer; he is set to sign a new four year deal with us. He has just been promoted from the Football League with us to fulfil his long-term ambitions of playing at the highest level of English football. He has said countless times (and if my reallocation is correct, not that long ago in fact) that he is indebted to us as a club for giving him his football league break. He is a well liked player with the rest of the squad and Nigel and his relationship is almost like a father and son's - probably stemming from their common interest of Sheffield Wednesday. If this went ahead, it would be the most pointless transfer in and out of our club since Junior Lewis!
Filbert_Ross Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Id be fuming if we flogged Vardy, he's gonna be a real asset next season. Can't wait too see him be a right pest to some top defenders.

Not to mention the comments from Nigel showing how highly he rates Vardy and is expecting big things from him. We didn't turn Southampton's offer down like Brighton did with Ulloa, we told them he's not for sale.
sdb Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Never kicked a ball in the top flight, 1 good season in the Championship...and he's worth upwards of £30 million. Speechless!
Carlos88LCFC Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 Never kicked a ball in the top flight, 1 good season in the Championship...and he's worth upwards of £30 million. Speechless! Regardless of "premiership experience" his attributes are what makes his worth. I wouldn't say he's worth 30 million(yet) but I will say we shouldn't sell him as he's the best striker we have and it would be the sign of lack of ambition. If we needed the cash like most clubs then it would make sense as it would give us power to spend elsewhere but we have power to spend elsewhere and keep onto our best players so it would be pointless! He won't go. He plays with his heart, the fans love him and he loves everything about the club and what we have gave him. We will issue a "hands off warning" - football manager Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
foxfanazer Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 OK a couple of points 1) He isn't and never will be worth £30m. Never! 2) He isn't worth selling. He would be so hard to replace for what he brings to the team and we don't need to sell, especially to a premier league rival.
WhispyWizard Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 £15 million might seal the deal.Dont forget hes english, so you haveto add 50% more ... so £22.5m please Southampton...Its not like they are cash strapped for players at the moment!
Jimothy Posted 20 July 2014 Posted 20 July 2014 People saying he's it worth £15m etc. No he's not, but Ulloa isn't worth £7m. Lallana isn't worth £25m. Carroll wasn't worth £35m. Borini isn't worth £14m. McCormack isn't worth £11m. If every other club in the country can screw over teams by vastly over charging for players, why should meekly lets ours go for a realistic price? If we are to let any of our players leave this summer, then let's squeeze as much as we can out of the buying club.
