Rafa certainly played his part in your downfall, he made some incredibly strange transfers near the end.

I'd rather not be reminded of Degen, thank you. lol

Andy Carroll signing for £35 million summed up that bizarre transfer window to be fair, think Darren Bent had just transferred to Aston Villa for £24 million from Sunderland, we had just sold Fernando Torres for £50 million to Chelsea and that left us a day to sign a striker. Newcastle know we obviously need a striker, they obviously know we have just sold Torres for £50 million and they have Andy Carroll who was the leading English striker at the time and who was having a good season. They were obviously going to value him quite a bit higher than Darren Bent. Plus we signed Luis Suarez that window for £20 million, so wasn't all bad I guess.

How we made £20 million out of selling Andy Carroll I still don't know, thank you West Ham United!

Carroll was the biggest panic buy Liverpool ever made but at the time they just sold their star striker to Chelsea. So they did need to sign someone for the fans sake. I just think how much money Liverpool have wasted though and with the money they have spent should at least won the league once. Players like Ryan babel though spring to mind though, they haven't ever brought a say proper world class player in their peak. They buy potentially world class players and even under Gerard Houllier had that same transfer style. No offence but Liverpool could nerve sign a Ozil or Sanchez.

We couldn't but in my lifetime have Liverpool ever signed a world class footballer? I mean a footballer at his peak, probably not.

Tbf in your lifetime Liverpool have had the same transfer policy. They are desperate to win the league and they have spent and spent and spent Roy Evans spent money and didn't achieve **** all, same with Gerard and Rafa. Woy tbf didn't spend a lot , but I don't think he was ever properly backed. Saying that , he's a shit manager but the point I'm making is Liverpool manager get backed regarding money. Just seems they waste a lot of it on average players or idiots like Diouf and the other shite Senegal player.

I know Rafa signed Xabi Alonso but wasn't he the one who almost practically pushed him out to try & get Gareth Barry in?

Yeah, tried to push him out for Barry. That was the summer before he left, kind of summed it all up in the end for Rafa. Still the best manager I have seen at Anfield, saying that I have only ever seen 6 managers in my years of understanding football.

Rafa was a tactical genius and was very unfortunate I think that he managed in England and Liverpool when the League was at its absolute best and there were two better sides than us in Chelsea and Man United. Could easily have won the League in 05-06 if it wasn't for a draw fest start to the season finished on 82 points and Chelsea won it on 91. Then 08-09, only lost two League games, finished on 86 points, Gerrard was unreal, were easily the best footballing side that season but somehow drew 11 games and only finished 4 points behind Man United. Back to back 0-0 draws at home to Fulham and West Ham were probably the two stand out results, but there was also 0-0's v Stoke home and away and 0-0 at home to Aston Villa. Not forgetting that we lost 2-0 away to Middlesbrough who were absolutely dog shit and got relegated that year! They're the two seasons under Rafa we should and could have won the League. But it was Europe as well where Rafa took us a Champions League win, something Wenger has never done, something Mourinho has never done at Chelsea and something Ferguson only managed twice with at United in 20 odd years. Another Final in 2007 and always through the Group Stages! The man will always be a Liverpool Legend.

Rafa was just negative to win a league - wasn't prepared to gamble one point for three enough.

He wouldn't even do it with Real Madrid Sunday, strangest thing I've watched, you won't win La Liga these days settling for a point away at Gijon.

Not winning the league with the likes of Alonso, Reina, Carragher, Gerrard and a goalscoring Torres was a massive failure. Liverpool fans don't like it but they'd have walked the league with Mourinho, Wenger or Fergie.

Having said that, the Champions League was a massive success...even if that Milan side capitulated in the final.

It's not that simple though is it, look at the sides United and Chelsea had!

Tbh arsenal had a better side then Liverpool back then . RVP, Nasri, Clichy, Fàbregas, Gallas, Walcott, Whilshire , Sagna and Toure.

Even Adebayor was class at the time, Arsenal were top until they ****ed up against Birmingham.

I'd not say failure - United's front three of Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney between 2007-2009 was on a different planet.

Let's not argue about this but Arsenal didn't have a better side.

From 05-06 to 08-09 Arsenal finished above Liverpool once in 4 seasons.

Champions League..

05-06 Liverpool 2nd Round - Arsenal Finalists

06-07 Liverpool Finalists - Arsenal 2nd Round

07-08 Liverpool Semi Finalists - Arsenal Quarter Finalists (Liverpool knocking them out)

08-09 Liverpool Quarter Finalists - Arsenal Semi Finalists

So pretty similar in Europe at that time, so the evidence is that Arsenal were actually no better than Liverpool but Liverpool did finish higher in the League 3 times over that 4 season period.

Squads from that 2008-2009 season..

Man United - Van Der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Hargreaves, Fletcher, Giggs, Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov and Park Ji-Sung. Plus all the other squad players like Anderson, Nani, O'Shea, Brown, Rafael and Saha.

Chelsea - Cech, Ivanovic, Terry, Carvalho, Cole, Essien, Lampard, Cole, Ballack, Malouda, Mikel, Deco, Alex, Anelka, Drogba, plus Quaresma, Bosingwa and Kalou.

Arsenal -  Almunia, Gallas, Sagna, Toure, Clichy, Song, Nasri, Fabregas, Diaby, Arshavin, Rosicky, Bendtner, Walcott, Adebayor, Van Persie, plus Eduardo, Gibbs, Ramsay, Eboue and Denilson.

Liverpool - Reina, Aurelio, Hyypia, Carragher, Agger, Skrtel, Arbeloa, Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Lucas, Babel, Kuyt, Torres and Riera, plus N'Gog, Benayoun, Robbie Keane (wow) and Insua.

Probably when the Premier League was the best League in the world.

Fergie would of won the league with that Liverpool team, Rafa would of lost it with that United team.

That united side is up there with the best there's been in the premier league, possibly the best strike force there's ever been. And vidic and Ferdinand were immense. Anyone could've won the league with that side, you included!

I'd say the big difference was the manager. You're backing up my point in saying that there wasn't an awful lot of difference n the sides but a truy great manager would have walked the league with that team.

You are aware of the concept that only one team can win the league aren't you,

He won the champions league though didn't he, he must be proper crap.

And achieved top four every season bar the season we won the Champions Leauge, Wenger is hailed a success for that achievement.

Rafa was/is a brilliant manager, if Rodgers was to have gone last summer then Rafa is the man I would of wanted in.
