Finnegan Posted 8 September 2014 Author Posted 8 September 2014 To clarify, if the opening post wasn't perfectly clear, I'm not talking about imitation markets in England. They're fine, they make an okay day out, but no. Thanks. I'm sure your local favourite is lovely.
Finnegan Posted 8 September 2014 Author Posted 8 September 2014 Plenty of decent food at reasonable prices, the stalls at the market also sell a wide range of food and they don't charge stupid prices for a bratwurst like the markets in the UK, a gluwein will cost €1.50 for 200ml etc Cheeky bastards at kayak were advertising flight prices per head. Slight shock when I went to try and pay. Might have to go back to the drawing board. Now have my heart set on Rothenburg though, looks immense and exactly what I'm after. Plus Tommy G has awoken my inner wreckless spender.

The UK imitation markets charge 2-3x more for stuff than the German ones and you get a great weekend away, we do visit the German Market in Birmingham but much prefer the real German ones.

I'm probably going to book this by the end of the day. I'm a ridiculously impulsive person and I like the look of it. Will go for Bruce's idea and rent a car as the hotel is in Steinsfeld which would be an hour's walk. What are fuel costs like in Germany, any idea? Parking easy enough in Rothenburg or have you not tried?

Diesel is cheaper than the uk but petrol is a bit more expensive, there is loads of parking at not too high cost outside the town walls, I prefer it when I'm not driving as I don't have to worry about gluwein and beer consumption.
Soar Fox Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Went to one in Bath a couple of years ago that was really nice.
Samilktray Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Is there actually anything wrong with the 1s in the UK? Only asking as the missus wants to go, im not remotely interested in them.
MooseBreath Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Surely you can just get anything you might want from Amazon? Then use the time and money you saved to go on a real holiday that doesn't involve shopping.
bovril Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Tallinn? Krakow? Northern Italian cities always do fantastic markets and at Christmas I'm sure they'll all look lovely.

The ones in the uk are ok, just a bit of a rip off but I guess you save on not travelling so far, I personally prefer to try new places and see stuff which is context rather than the expensive copies.
Webbo Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 boss one in liverpool most years See if there's anything you fancy on Crimewatch and then go down there and buy it.

Biggest for me is that it's dull. I've been to Lincoln, Birmingham and London. Going because there's a market there isn't going to draw me. Ideally wanted somewhere I'd happily go to in July and Rothenburg fits the bill. All booked, thanks Carl, looks awesome. I think I remember seeing it on your Facebook feed a year or two ago actually, or somewhere very similar looking.
Chug Laguna Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 This is fascinating to me as I've no idea what a "Christmas Market" is and can't even glean it from the posts.

It's all on Lisa's Facebook from December 2012, we've been twice but stayed there in 2012, 2011 was just a day trip. Walking the walls is also fun and there are daily events throughout the town during Market season, pray for a bit of snow[emoji4]
Chug Laguna Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Basically mate its a market held at Christmas time Well hell was hoping for something more. Cheers.
Nalis Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Me and the better half are doing Berlin 6th-9th December, really looking forward to it already. I've been told Munich is supposed to be the best in Germany but opted for Berlin cos the missus hasn't been before. Didn't even realise that about St Nicolas Day on the 6th, nice little bonus. Was Budapest in late November last year so the Xmas markets were just starting when I was there. Nice city with a real chilled out vibe, would recommend it.

We loved Brugge, it looks a little smaller but a similar appeal. Looking forward to it now!
Stadt Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Finnegan stop kidding yourself, you're a hipster
BlackburnClaret Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 I've only done Cologne and would highly recommend it. The market itself is held in the shadow of the Cathedral which is worth the visit alone.

I've just realised we may be in Rothenburg on 4th and 5th, my works Christmas party is probably going to be on the evening of 5th near our German office. I'll buy you a gluwein if we see you around.

Guest MattP Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Munich is fantastic, the Marienplatz was the main part of it but come out of the centre and it gets far more 'German' and less touristy. We somehow ended up a boat the other year after far too many gluhweins and about 40 miles from home but there is no better country to get lost in. My German friends always rave about the Rosenheim one which is about 40 mins from Munich I think, not been there at Xmas but they say it's the best by a mile. To be honest it's Germany, if you can't have a good time there you won't anywhere.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Finnygonne isn't a hipster but somehow turns every thread into chat about fixed gear bikes and floral shirts.
