Finnegan Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Explorers of Foxes Talk, I need your help. The missus wants to go to a Christmas market on the mainland, it's her birthday coming up and I'm after something affordable to book as a pressie. Some of you must have done European Christmas Markets? (not Hyde Park or ****ing Birmingham) Any experiences to share? Also, good websites for booking cheap European city breaks welcome. Cheaper the better. Ideally what I'd like is somewhere that's a little more quaint / authentic than simply massive and overly popular. Call me a travel hipster. Basically, I don't want to pay over the odds to stand in enormous crowds in Berlin. Do you essentially have to go German to get authentic? I'd like an excuse to go back to Flanders, though Brugge is out as we've already been this year.
Sir Fynwy Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 The 'Original' German Christmas market is at Rothenburg ob der Tauber, I have been a few times and it is very good, the town is very beautiful and was used in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. If you want to fly there Nurenburg or Stuttgart might be good options.
Finnegan Posted 8 September 2014 Author Posted 8 September 2014 boss one in liverpool most years Get the **** out.
Ryanside Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Been to the Hamburg quite a few times, large market at the Rathaus with lots of smaller ones throughout the city. Fair amount to do their especially if you can tag a St Pauli game in too...
RobHawk Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Went to prague last year! The market itself wasn't amazingly special but the city at Christmas is just magical. I literally walked around with the home alone theme in my head the whole time. Would defo recommend it. We booked our flights and hotel ourselves and it was so much cheaper than the packages. We flew from east mids with Jet 2 and booked the hotel through something like Expedia. Krakow is also supposed to be very good! My old girl has been there a few times including last year at Xmas.
Guest Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 You have to go German and I'd suggest December 6. There are airlines who do specials I think.

Finnegan Posted 8 September 2014 Author Posted 8 September 2014 What's the significance of December 6th?

Bellend Sebastian Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 What's the significance of December 6th? Freddie Flintoff's birthday
Smudge Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Looks awesome. What sort of travel time / cost are we talking to get between Rothenburg and the airports?I'd rent a car for the time away.I just got a quote 5th - 8th with Europcar at rates from £52 from Stuttgart airport. Convenient, you see the countryside and probably cheaper than public transport. According to Google maps it's about 120 km.
Sir Fynwy Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Looks awesome. What sort of travel time / cost are we talking to get between Rothenburg and the airports? I think there are budget flights to Nuremberg from Stansted but I don't really know, this is closest but you can fly from Birmingham to Frankfurt or Stuttgart, if you book early enough flight costs aren't much. I've stayed in the town once, there are plenty of relatively cheap family owned hotels we used a hotel called Hotel Restaurant Cafe Uhl. Not sure how you'd get from the airports by public transport, I always have a hire car when in Germany.
Guest Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 What's the significance of December 6th? St.Nicholas day. In Germany Children leave their shoe outside for St.Nicholas to fill it. German's give presents etc...
Finnegan Posted 8 September 2014 Author Posted 8 September 2014 I can do three nights in Rothenburg plus flights for both of us for three hundred quid. That's Ryan Air to Nurenburg. Sounds pretty good. The place looks amazing, too. Is it expensive to eat.and drink there? (Keep in mind I'm not an international man of mystery like you, Carl!)

Tommy G Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Sounds like every question you ask relates to money! What dont you get you spend a bit more and combine it with Christmas? Doing things on the cheap never works and you dont enjoy it
Guest Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Does everything close down? I'm looking at 4th to 7th, will everything be shut on the! 6th? The German' have very few public holidays and things never shut down. I mentioned the 6th because it's a goodwill time and should be a more enjoyable atmosphere for you both. More ifts are bought on the 5th than on Christmas eve in Germany.

Doing things on the cheap never works and you dont enjoy it I'm really poor. I've just moved. I'm going to live off noodles and ham sandwiches this month just to pay for this. We're not all loaded, Tommy. Seriously though, I'm not looking at a dirty hostel in Coventry, I'm eyeing up a nice historic town and a tidy hotel. You can't fault me wanting a bargain.
Vossen Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 I Live in Maastricht & 20 mins away is Aachen, fantastic Xmas market....Dec 6 is also the day Santa arrives in this part of the world, from Spain !!!

Plenty of decent food at reasonable prices, the stalls at the market also sell a wide range of food and they don't charge stupid prices for a bratwurst like the markets in the UK, a gluwein will cost €1.50 for 200ml etc
Larry_LCFC Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 You don't need to go to Germany.... Just go to Lincoln Really good German Christmas market in a really nice location up by the cathedral/castle.
