Singing through a minutes silence?

Good evening all, I've registered up on here just to clear up a few points.

I'm an NUFC fan that was at the game yesterday.

Newcastle fans have clapped once the clock hits 17:00 until 18:00 for the two Newcastle fans who sadly passed away in the MH17 plane crash.

There were boos coming from the Newcastle fans during this applause due to two Leicester fans to our right making aeroplane gestures and laughing.

Obviously this is a very small idiotic minority, but absolutely disgraceful also - and apart from Sunderland (again, a very small minority) no other set of supporters have this season been so disgusting.

We don't expect or demand other supporters to join in with the clapping, but we certainly don't expect reactions like that.

Hopefully when we return in May, those idiots will not be anywhere near the stadium.

Please don't refer to people like that as supporters of our club.

To even have them in the same Stadium as genuine supporters is an embarrassment.

Aye, we're fully aware that it was only a very, very small minority.

Hopefully yesterday was their first and last game at a football match - absolutely no place for people like them in our sport.

I have all the sympathy in the world for the people who died on MH17, and their families, but none whatsoever for your fans.

Leicester City fans die every week, occasionally in tragic and unexpected, unjust circumstances. Look at the Leicester Mercury website, there'll be a few examples from the past seven days, I'm sure. Sometimes, on very, very rare occasions, they are commemorated. But your form of commemoration isn't a minute's silence, it isn't a one-off, it doesn't take place in a quiet and dignified place at an adequate moment, it's something that you have decided that everyone else in the country should share with you, on a weekly basis, in the middle of a football match.

Quite apart from the fact that hardly anybody in Leicester has a clue what the whole thing was about, you are effectively obliging everybody else in the country to share in your mourning for something which happens absolutely everywhere, pretty much all of the time. I know we live in a country which has been big on shared grief / public outpourings of emotion ever since Diana's death, but if you impose your mourning on everyone else, in every ground you go to, and do so all the time, then you can hardly complain if people decide that they'd rather not share in your sense of loss.

I don't condone the aeroplane gestures, but who knows what those fans have gone through in their lives, what losses they've endured, which nobody has insisted on holding a one minute tribute for. I've taught a lot of kids who've lost their parents, or friends, or family and we never hold a one minute tribute for them. Why shouldn't they get a minute's applause? Instead they go back to their daily lives and they do their best to carry on, with as much support as we can offer.

The strong implication in your message was that our fans have stood out as disgusting, in your mind, because of these individuals. You bypassed the message by someone who said they'd had to put up with unprovoked abuse from one of your supporters throughout the game. I wouldn't dream of looking at that incident and coming to the conclusion that yours are a disgusting set of fans. I certainly wouldn't go on a Newcastle forum to moan about it.

It never helps to make sweeping statements about a group of individuals. But Newcastle fans, as a group of individuals, need to get over themselves. Be it complaining about people who might be understandably bored of your constant lamenting for this illness, or that death, or whatever else, or be it calling for your most successful manager in a generation to be fired, or booing his stand-in replacement and all of your players. Your fans are a laughing stock, and while I'm sure lots of people will disagree with me, I see no reason to apologise for any Leicester fans, however thick and disrespectful they might be, who might have pointed that out.

That booing noise wasn't our fans it was from the Geordies presumably part of a chant that sounded like a boo during the applause.

I've heard it all now. A chant that sounds like a boo during a minute's respectful applause, yeah that must've been it pal.

Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuume

Not that it excuses the aeroplane gesture which is pretty pathetic on anyone's scale but they exist...

Oh, those geordies were absolute chodes.

First thing they sang at kick off - "Here, there, every f**kingwhere, empty seats" - completely ignoring the almost 1000 seats of their allocation that they failed to sell.

They were giving it the big 'un from the get go and abusing kids and families in the family stand - even a few projectiles thrown our way. Stewards did nowt, but singling out the 90's shellsuit-chav throwback with a "squirrel on his head" who thought he was hard for threatening to attack my 17-year old brother, and pretty much anyone who looked his way, was a laugh.

Honestly, I and many others on the edge of the family stand that day weren't going to give those mouthbreathers any respect. We'd not heard about the campaign, and I'll confess I booed. I wouldn't have done if I'd had some sort of information - any at all - from them on what it was about, but to roundly abuse kids and families and then expect them to "show respect" for your poorly-advertised circlejerk beggars belief. No regrets, the Geordies can do one.

1-0. :trumpet:

EDIT: Oh, and I've not even got into them booing their players and caretaker manager when their team most needed a boost. Small time to the max. I know Ashley is a controversial owner and all, but jesus christ, the atmosphere at that club is poison. Makes me appreciate our owners, and the majority of our fans, sticking by Pearson through tough spells even more.

"We're sh*t and we're sick of it" - you're in the top half, you absolute ******! Shortly followed by the surrounding LCFC fans singing "One Alan Pardew".

Shit board, shit manager, shit fans, and shit overrated atmosphere. I hate that club so much.

How on Earth you can attempt to justify the behaviour is beyond me.

Aye, I'm sure there were some Newcastle fans abusing Leicester fans - as there were probably Leicester fans returning the favour. But there is a strong, strong difference in celebrating and mocking the deaths of two well known and respected supporters.

If you honestly believe the response that you have written you are clearly not a football supporter, nor are you a normal human being.

I said quite clearly we do not expect any other supporters to join in, but we also do not expect supporters to stand mocking the deaths of John and Liam.

The difference between these two supporters and 'any other death' is they died on their way to support their team in a pre-season friendly in such horrific circumstances.

Sometimes in football you have to stand up and accept something is wrong.

More or less every death is tragic in it's own way look at last season one of our supporters died at the Brighton game and a Doncaster fan died here at the last game of the season.

Don't get me wrong I am not making light of the circumstances in which your 2 supporters died but to expect every club to share your grief all the time is somewhat disrespectful in my opinion.

Why you booed our fans for not clapping for something that the vast majority knew nothing about is beyond me. You can't expect people to know everything you guys do unless you tell them. For what it's worth I did see people clapping in our end I didn't because I knew nothing about it.

Edit: also I don't condone people taking the piss out of the way they died. That's just disgusting

I heard them applauding in the 17th minute but knew nothing about why.I suspect mist city fans didn't know.

They didn't get.boos they were just left to carry on with it.

To be fair he did say they were booing due to the two fans in Leicester end making aeroplane gestures, and has not once mentioned booing our fans for not joining in.

If city fans people were making aeroplane gestures they deserve a good slap

I agree. Disgraceful behaviour.

Newcastle are still a shit club with shit fans.

I thought the clapping was for Gutierrez (sp?) so it wasn't very well publicised what it was for, any aeroplane gestures were unacceptable but simply not clapping is not disrespectful or anything similar

You need to get over yourself mate. The part in bold is embarrassing, not to mention completely logically fallacious (look up No True Scotsman). You lot and Liverpool fans are cut from the same cloth; mawkish and eagerly self-pitying, insistent that the rest of the country indulge your maudlin public displays of grief at your behest whenever you decide it's appropriate. If a couple of people did an aeroplane gesture, then you'll find lots of people agreeing with you that it's a tasteless thing to do. But worth, as you have said, being banned from every football match as long as they live? You're on a different planet mate.

Look, people dying is very sad and I feel terribly sorry for the family of the deceased. Believe it or not, Newcastle isn't the only club whose fans have died; literally every club has a history of in-ground mid-game deaths, devestating tragedies, and awful accidents around the world involving fans. But it's only you lot and the scousers who seem to demand this perpetual and ubiquitous mourning process from everybody else. Somebody made a tasteless joke about somebody you half-know dying? Deal with it.

The deaths were tragic - I've not for one second disagreed with that. I'm just not sure that a weekly one minute tribute which you go to no lengths to tell opposition clubs about, despite repeating it on a weekly basis home and away, is the best way of commemorating it. And if Newcastle is mourning two well-known fans, then I wholeheartedly sympathise, but this is a shambles of a commemoration which you've chosen to impose on every other set of fans in the division.

The problem with public expressions of grief like these is that a lot of people won't like it. You can't defend people disrespecting the memory of those fans, but what the 'aeroplane gestures' (if they happened) meant, was that some people didn't like the nature of your tribute. It doesn't mean they were glad that those fans had died.

And when you place that in the context of a football match atmosphere, where your fans are dishing out plenty of unacceptable abuse of their own, and you bear in mind that you take up a minute of every single game with this same tribute, you can hardly be surprised.

It's not a million miles from the Princess Diana jokes back in 1997. The people who made those jokes weren't glad to see her dead, they just found the reaction to her death over-the-top. They disrespected the nature of the tribute, not the loss itself. A lot of those jokes were more sophisticated than the aeroplane gestures you describe, but the mind-set is similar.

You can't use the argument that you are 'not asking anyone else to join in' with your tribute. Because your tribute doesn't take place at a private place where mourners gather. It's happening in the middle of a football game, and everyone else has to listen to it. You've chosen to grieve in public, and you can't expect people who will have had to suffer losses of their own, many tragic, many of which will have been LCFC fans, to want to share in this.

On top of that, the clear implication in your original post was that our fans in some way stood out for their failure to respect this tribute. You felt the need to register on here to share this with us. And you distinguish between a fan making a disrespectful gesture towards your fans, and your fans being physically threatening towards our fans. Why not respond to the post about abuse towards our fans by saying 'that's terrible, but this type of thing happens... look what two of your fans did during our tribute to the MH17 victims?' No, it had to be all about Poor Newcastle.

But Newcastle fans are fast developing renown for being unreasonable, demanding, self-pitying and, generally speaking, counter-productive for their club. From an objective viewpoint, it's interesting to see a whole body of people look so totally thick and simultaneously rubbish at supporting their club. They are increasingly seen as a joke, and understandably so. It might be worth you considering this before you bring your bubbling sense of outrage onto another club's forum.

As for tributes, I'll respect them. But try organising them properly, and perhaps doing it on an anniversary rather than every week. Because at some point in time the tribute is going to descend into farce, gradually fizzle out, and seem a lot less respectful than simply holding a single, straightforward minute's silence, or a private tribute in a more appropriate place than an opposition club's football ground. Imagine what a disaster Remembrance Day would be if it happened every single week, without half of the people present even knowing when or how it was going to be commemorated.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that ................ it was someone else who said it might be for Gutierrez, so I just checked on my phone which squad number he had at Newcastle, looked at the minute of the game, saw they matched and made an (wrong) assumption.

Saw and heard the applause and wondered what it was all about, the idiots who made the plane gesture's obviously knew what it was about....that's the differance between the majority of our fans and the idiots.
