I got roped in to playing some weird zombie survival board game the other day. It wasn't awful. That's my contribution.

Was it Zombie 15 Minute by any chance?

I think it was called Zombiecide.

Knowing the guys I was playing with it wouldn't surprise me if it was crowd funded. They've got a thing for kickstarter board games.

Not really my thing but it was someone's thirtieth I've known since year nine so I try not to judge!

Any good Haydos? Love a pirate themed game. I have Jamaica and Black Fleet, which are both great!

I've played it a few times before and really like it. Cracked it out the other night with a few people that don't really game and they did as well. Pretty light and easy to learn but the theme and mechanics do what they do really well. Good balance of fun and strategy.

There's basically 18 'days' (6 days x 3 rounds) where you play a character card that has a certain effect (either immediately or at the end of the day or the end of the round). You all play them blind and then reveal, some cards affect others while others will just affect your game plan. Each of the 18 'days' you try and collect some randomly picked treasure (can be good or bad) so you have to balance trying to work out what cards other people are play with trying to get the best treasure.

Sounds a bit fiddly but plays very smoothly.

Atlantis has been around forever apparently. Again fairly light but a lot of light hearted fun. Goes down well when you have people round for drinks, takes about 5 mins to learn. Lots of backstabbing and swearing at your friends.

(This will probably give a better explanation of Libertalia)

I know that game - never played it, mainly cos I've never seen it at less than £60. Looks like one of those games that you really have to know inside out to get the best out of it.

The game I mentioned has a soundtrack that you play on your mobile or tablet which prompts adds to the ambience and everytime you hear a certain noise (I forget exactly what, but it's something like a scream) you add more zombies. Because of that, it's against the clock and theres no waiting ages for people to decide what to do, you DO OR DIE in finest Super Furry Animals fashion. I quite like the zombie genre as a plot device... RE series, George A Romero, Walking Dead, 28 Days/Weeks,  I Survived A Zombie Apocalypse (Okay, so it's not all good.), but this is the first of quite a few zombie games that I feel tempted by.

Yeah, I have that game, it's pretty exhilerating when you have 40 zombies about to jump you :P

Excellent game with good mechanics.

Played a lot of Arkham Horror a few weeks ago... Excellent game, but takes way too long. Rules quite complex, but brilliant still :)

Oh dear, I sure am old.

Careers

Totopoly

Monopoly

Cluedo

Test Match (not really a board game)

Dungeons and Dragons was my last board game.

Same era, same games (except Dungeons and Dragons). I used to love playing board games as a child, passed many a long hour (we didn't have a TV until I was 8 years old, unthinkable now). Add the following to the above list:

Risk

Go (the Waddingtons travel game not the Chinese game)

Formula 1

Diplomacy

Played Monopoly last week. Changed since I last played it. Now four locations on some and there are skyscrapers.

Boardgaming club tonight at La Vida. Quite a few turn up now but there is always room in a game. It is now being set up as an official group after a bit of trouble. All I will say there was a falling out of two members who were close and now refuse to play with each other.

Will be playing a bit of X-wing tomorrow - I now have some Scum and Villainy ships in the form of IG-2000, Starviper and M3A. IG-2000 looks amazing, can't wait to try it out.

I have also discovered this today...

I assume this is to do with Dominion the deck builder? Is it just an expansion? I've only played Dominion the once, think it was just the base game but I thought it was a little dry with no player interaction. It all just seemed a bit theme-less. I should give it another go because it seems to be the trailblazer in that genre.

I got to play Galaxy Trucker as my friend bought it recently. Very simple and fun game, its silliness is what makes it. You start each of 3 rounds by building your ship. This consists of an against-the-clock phase of picking up face-down tiles and either placing them on your ship or returning them face up for either player to use from then on. Once you've placed a tile it must stay in that position and once the time is up all pieces must connect properly (either a 1,2 or 3 connector type deal). Each tile does different things (lasers for attacking, shields for deflecting, batteries for power, cabins for your crew, etc) so you have to try to balance your ship but in the end it will just look ridiculous and probably be useless.

Once you've finished your ships you can relax. You start drawing cards of a fairly random deck to decide what happens on your 'space travels'. You'll get things like asteroid fields, smugglers, planets to settle, warzones etc that will all test different parts of your ship and offer different rewards. The fun comes in the randomness, you'll get hit by asteroids because you don't have enough batteries to power your shields or you won't have enough lasers to defeat the smugglers and they then shoot off another laser, or a particularly thin part of your ship gets wiped out and it'll be split in half leaving you to decide which part of your terrible creation you want to play on with.

Anyway, lots of silliness and light fun for adults and kids alike.

Yeah it's an expansion, a large one too. As for Dominion being theme-less I am just :o ! I don't think I've ever played a more themed game. Every card makes sense in what it does and that follows through to the many expansions - Seaside and Prosperity being my favourites, but I guess if you don't like deck-builders it might not be your thing.

I am pathetic...I feel like one of the figures, because everybody plays games with me, then get locked up in a box, until

I am needed again, sometimes it can take years.....

Depends on if you're one of the pawns from Sorry! or a multi-use meeple.

Any board game fans out there? I've started playing a lot of games over the last couple of years as a couple of mates have started to build up really good collections.

Some favourites:

  • Dead of Winter
  • 7 Wonders
  • Game of Thrones
  • Libertalia
  • Lords of Waterdeep
  • Carcassonne
  • Twilight Imperium
  • Settlers of Catan
  • The Resistance (Avalon)
  • Love Letter

Discuss!

Mahjong is the best (although not technically a board game)

also love the logo games :-)

Lost Valley Of The Dinosaurs

Not sure if you can still buy it, but it's well worth hunting down second hand on ebay. Probably the best board game i've ever played.

Think "Key To The Kingdom" should get a special mention as well!

A friend and I have just gone halves on Imperial Assault (cos it's quite expensive). All sorts of Star Wars fun... I shall be attempting for the first time since my Airfixing youth to paint small pieces of moulded plastic.
