Why can't we defend crosses?

I see the ceiling!!  It looks dull!!!

Put on the lights, Singhy!!! Told you lots of times before, but you just wouldn't listen!!!

If it still looks dull, take it down - and have a look at the stars at night. :D

Couldn't agree more, that's why he never be a top keeper, woefull at commanding his area, but makes up for it with amazing saves.

Does he make up for it?

Does he make up for it?

Don't know, hard one to call, does his lack of ability to dominate his area cost more goals, than his saves prevent?, not convinced he's got the all round game, but he could come and claim or at least get something on alot of crosses, and take a lot of pressure off his defenders, and stop a lot of scrambles inside the box, instead of being planted on his line.

Its been a problem for years. Even last season when we defended very well, a cross eventually came in and more often than not, caused bloody mayhem.

Height isnt the main issue but it doesnt help. If we had defenders and a goalkeeper who were 6ft 3 or 6ft 4, the presence in the area would be felt more than it is now.

From memory, Upson is only 6ft 1 too so unless he is a master of organisation, I cant see things improving a great deal once he's fit.

As long as I can remember, center halves cleared headers from their own box and scored headers in the opponents box from set pieces.

Our current center halves don't seem to be able to do either.

The last great one we had was Matt Elliott. He's right up there in the great goal scoring defenders records.

Quote:

"Not only was Elliott captain for that trip to Wembley, but he scored both goals as Tranmere were defeated 2-1. He remains the only defender to score twice in a one-off League Cup final, and was the last captain to lift the trophy at the old Wembley stadium. This was undoubtedly the high point of his football career, but 33 goals in his eight years at Leicester were proof of his influence at both ends of the pitch."

Our best player at defending crosses this season has been Ulloa. He's only one that seems to consistently win headers. When he went off yesterday I feared the worst, one because he was replaced by Nugent, but also because I knew we would suffer defensively as well.

I lost count of the amount of clearances Morgan made yesterday. We have to stop the crosses at source!

Its been like it for 3 years and its not been sorted out.

Whatever the issue is, it wont be addressed.

Agree, defending set pieces we have looked vulnerable for a long time now and at the other end, considering the number of set pieces we can generate we get very little from them since the delivery is often poor.

Agree that we're not preventing the crosses at source enough. It's not just down to the full backs, often they're faced with two against one situations as the opposing wingers and full backs link up and tee each other up for a cross. We invite too much pressure into our box, Morgans shot blocking is admirable but desperate last ditch stuff, without those contributions we'd be shipping fours and fives. Having said that it was even worse when we had the narrow diamond in midfield, the opposition full backs had time and space to put crosses in whilst having a picnic at the same time.

There does seem to be a culture of standing off and keeping shape rather than closing down, in that area around the beginning of the final third of the pitch. Banks of four and straight lines are one thing but I'd prefer us to focus on where the balls going rather than doing impressions of the Red Arrows running around in formation as this doesn't allow for the opposition overloading and doubling up in an area of the pitch.

The U21s are brilliant at both defending and attacking pieces. The delivery is often better (Jak McCourt) and the desire shown by some of the players to win the ball is magnificent. Tom Hopper stands out for me, he's not the tallest but he puts 110% into every header.

We need players in the first team that show the same attitude. I just think we need to be a bit more aggressive when going for the ball. We need to attack the ball, not wait for the ball to come to us. We can criticise Schmeichel (rightly so, occasionally) but he's not at fault for the teams inability to score from corners.

Every time a cross comes into the box, Kasper takes a couple of steps off line to suggest he's coming to punch/collect then goes back, leaving our defenders in a pickle. Yesterday, he could've collected the ball for both the 2nd and 3rd goals, maybe even the first, but he flapped it!

All QPRs goals were simple, scored from close in.Our defence appear to lack cohesion, there may be a lack of communication and concentration.

The central defenders were too deep too often .Kaspar needs to command the 6 yard box.

The full backs may not be good enough but there are still 6 games before the window.NP & Co really need to concentrate in training on snuffing out crosses at source.

Although he got in plenty of blocks,Morgan lapsed for the OG.Hhow do you train to ensure 100 minutes concentration?

Lack of commanding goalkeeper and short players in general. Morgan's a tank but he isn't that tall is he really. Same with Wasilewski/Moore. Ulloa's our only really good player in the air. Upson will be aerially dominant hopefully.

Because we're doing stupid zonal marking which doesn't work unless you have 5/6 6ft plus players who are all commanding in the air which we don't. Take Saturday for example, their third goal came from a number of errors. The first being that matty James didn't beat Caulker in the air. James isn't small but he should never be put up against their CB that should be Morgans job. Man marking is the way to go. Stick with your man, go man for man as much as you can in terms of size and win the ball. I'm surprised to see np deploy a continental and modern way of defending, you'd think he would be pretty old school, and right now, I wish he had been.

I think it's pretty obvious to be honest.

We aren't pressing the ball in wide positions. Countless times this season I've watched our midfielders and full backs stand off the opposition for them to cross the ball freely. Konchesky seems to be dropping in to a CB position when the ball is wide sometimes and leaves Schlupp not knowing whether to shit or wind his watch.

Both of our fullbacks are playing very narrow, unless our wide midfield players track back we are literally giving them space and time to get their crosses in. It's a crap way of playing but for whatever reason that is how we are set up.

When the crosses do come in, our back 3 are nothing like commanding enough, from set pieces they defend in a zone, they are jumping flat footed while the attackers are getting a run at the ball. We have few options personnel wise, but we could revert to marking 'man to man'. On saturday we had 5 defenders circling Schmeichel in the 6 yard box with the nearest attacker beyond the penalty spot..... :dunno:

Agreed.

Our corner setup is a bit of a cluster****. Teams know that our 'best' headers of the ball are going to be stood on the six yard line, so the opposition get free runs on them,

On the pressing front, we usually press quite hard for the first 20 minutes before we start to drop off. Just in the past two games alone, we went from looking dangerous to being cut apart as soon as we drop off them. Fletcher should have scored for Sunderland and QPR did score. This is not a team that can try to contain. We don't have the players for it. There needs to be a consistent press.

I can't be bothered to make a new thread

But why can't we attack cunting crosses. WE DESPERATELY NEED HELP.

I actually don't think James' delivery is too bad. Nobody seems to get near the ball wherever it is put in the box.
