Manager? Players? or tactics?

When we did bring on the subs and had Cambi, King and James all on the pitch, we looked a lot better. We actually nearly scored a goal.

But we didn't score though and Swansea already had their feet up with a fag lit.

Why do I think the last two performances have been better than the others, because the goals haven't come from not having an extra man in the middle. The goals have mostly been stupid errors or from high balls into the box, which would most probably happen no matter how many men you have.

Those performances have also produced a multitude of chances that have been squandered. If you can't take your chances we aren't going to win any game, no matter how many men you have in midfield.

Glaringly obvious last night we needed another centre mid in the side.

Ball drops to Gerrard and there's no one anywhere near him. We can blame Wes for the clearance (although that's harsh in my opinion as he was stretching) but the fact is we didn't have a midfielder tracking Gerrard's run

Similar chance fell to Cambiasso late on. The difference was, he had bodies all around him including a Liverpool midfielder and that was enough to deny him having a free shot at goal like Gerrard had.

I'm fine with us playing sides like WBA, Villa, Burnley. Sunderland and going for it with a 442 but against a side like Liverpool who had Lucas, Gerrard and Henderson all starting, I'd have preferred us to play 3 Cm's. This doesn't mean I advocate the diamond Pearson picked where we had no wide players at all. or playing strikers out wide which we did at Swansea, I'd still have one of the front players being a natural wide man.

We are giving our defence too much to do by not having enough protection in the middle of the park.

Agree with what you say but I am starting to worry about Morgan. Saturday’s own goal. Two assists for Liverpool’s goals last night and a blunder that got him sent off. Hat trick for Cap'n Morgan.

His suspension might end up being a blessing in disguise if Was and Moore or Upson can establish a partnership.

Was is clearly now our best CD. Can’t believe he didn’t start the season.

It's quite amazing how that man manages to floor so many opposition players without conceding a free kick.

He had Lambert around the throat at one point and looked like he was trying to throttle him mid tackle. I remember him running back another two or three times and managing to take out several of their players.

I think we might have found your extra midfielder, put him at DM :D

Yes there’s been a definite improvement in the last two performances, particularly last night.

95% of goals involve a defensive mistake… you can’t stop these from happening. What you can do however is to occupy the space just in front of the defence just to help out when your defenders mess up.

As has been said already, the killer goal that Gerrard scored last night fell right in that area. Had Hammond (or Lee Cattamole J) been on the pitch as well as James and Cambiasso he would probably have been in that area to clear the ball or at least challenge Gerrard.

At the end of the day, teams like us have to concentrate firstly on not conceding goals, and then secondly on scoring them. Law of nature. Blackpool tried to defy this law a few years ago and got relegated. I don’t want us to follow suit.

I keep hearing commentators saying how ‘brave’ it is for us to go 442. What they actually mean of course  is ‘stupid’!

He's brilliant isn't he. :)

He makes fouling an art form. There was another one where he just allowed his arm to drift balletically into Lambert's face. There was nothing the referee could do about it cos it just appeared to be the natural flowing movement of his arm. Was actually made it appear as if it was Lambert's face that was in the wrong place...  Genius. :D

It bought tears to my eyes - they should put it in the end-of-season Highlights DVD.

Was is to fouling what Messi is to scoring goals.

I know what you are saying, but even the Gerrard goal if I ignore the defensive mistake I still think if the players hadn't switched off at the free kick it wouldn't have happened.

They took it quickly, we weren't set or close enough to our men and then looked like moths around a light following the ball and not their men.

If I thought they had been breaking through us all the time and were ridiculously outnumbered then I would agree with you. But we probably had one of our highest percentages of possession last night for the season, even with us being one man down.

I'm a bit surprised he hasn't gone to his old trick of putting a CM wide and asking them to tuck in yet.

Ulloa can barely move and were playing him as the link between midfield and attack, it's a travesty. We were crying out for a proper attacking midfielder and we've actually picked the worst player in the squad to take that position since Nugent proved incapable.

Don't get me started on the full backs.

Luckily for us, there are other sides equally as poor in my opinion:

WBA

Palace

Burnley

QPR

Villa

But we've lost against three of them, picked up a point against one & play the other at the weekend.

Can't beat those sort of teams, then we have no chance.

It's a complicated issue.

I'm now for Cambiasso, but not against Cattermole. So I've got all bases covered...

Ignoring the fact I don't agree with that as the only reason that area of the pitch required closing down is a complete fuk up on our half which no one could foresee. If you put an additional CM in you'd have to take one of Vardy or Ulloa out, given it took their combined efforts to score we'd of never of scored the opener.

Indeed..he must have half a brain!

lol

Out of interest, are you on about the dominant half or the non-dominant half?

Are the temporal lobes intact or has the frontal lobe gone for a burton?

Enlighten us..

Ok, I appreciate right now, im probably going to get tons of stick because what im suggesting for one might sound like a step backwards, and might sound like Pulis football and i want Nige here and to be the manager for the long term.

Having watched every game this season, whether it be live or streamed, Most games have us hovering around 35-40% possession. Probably more like mid 30s. Ball retention has been an issue for the side certainly, the passing at times has been sloppy and last night and Swansea away would be two examples of that in particular.

I watched last night on TV unfortunately, but Michael Owen made a remark which i agreed with, and actually suggested to a few mates before the game. He almost suggested BYPASSING the midfield where it was congested with Liverpool having the extra man in there, and looking up top early.

I thought during the QPR game, particularly for the first 30 mins, the over the top ball and the diagonal to Vardy was working pretty effectively too, it caused a number of problems to their defence and Vardy looked impish in that role, almost revelled in it.

Coupled with the fact that we arent great in possession by premier league standards, is there a case for getting the ball into the final 3rd quickly, either looking to win the header or 2nd ball and playing from there? Picking up the bits and pieces and looking to get bodies forward from midfield to press it high up the pitch when the ball breaks? We say we dont utilise Ulloa enough but if he could do his share with the high ball and we get people around him, could this be an option?

Now dont get me wrong, its just about being pragmatic and surviving. Im not saying it would be brilliant to watch, im not saying it would be free flowing. But beggars cant be choosers right now. Its almost for me a case of reducing an opposition team to our level by doing this.

As above, all 3 for me.

Pearson -

His arrogance is great when we're winning, but it really doesn't help him when we're not. His comments after the Burnley game have really came back to bite him, since then Burnley have found a little form and we have been dreadful at best. Also, post the United game he seems to have given far too much respect to very poor sides, Burnley, Sunderland and West Brom at home in particular.

Tactics -

I won't even go into the diamond, but everybody knows that didn't work. Pearson himself said he wanted to stick with the majority of the players that got us here in the first place, and that's fair enough, but he's done the complete opposite in many ways. Yes the majority of the players are the same, but the shape, balance and ambition of the side is completley different. Of course there were always going to be changes due to the difference in opposition, but there's no way on earth we'd have faced up to Derby and QPR last season, for example, in the manner that we did against West Brom this season - why the difference?

Players -

As above, there have been far too many individual errors thus far from players who were almost faultless last season. But, the difference is, our errors are being punished by the opposition and we're not punishing any errors ourselves. Of course Pearson is going to say that confidence and belief is as high as ever, to protect the players etc, but far too many players are doing things this season that they'd never have done last season. E.g Vardy last night shooting from 20yards rather than running at Kolo Toure, same as Nugent on numerous occasions. James giving the ball away so many times needlessly, Konch unable to find a blue shirt (some might say that's always the case), Morgan giving too much respect to their forwards at times.

It's clear that there's not one single thing that will change our season, but as Nige said it's down to himself and the players, not anybody else, to turn it around. Sunday is massive for me, a win will banish most of the memories of the last couple of months, a draw will breave a little bit of confidence, and a loss may be the final nail in the coffin in some respects - based on the forthcoming games after Villa.

wonderful inciteful post but have to disagree; but I feel Pearson is done. I think all the tinkering he did with the tatctics earlier have caused too much damage for us to get back on track. Have affected the players to some what and his arrogance won't let him admit he was wrong with his formations and selections and substitutions. So if we do scrape out a few results he will only screw that up as well. As long has there are Forums like this one where fans can give there critizism or advice he will deliberately ignore it and do the opposite. It's his way or the highway.

Sad but true. HYas served Leicester well but he honestly believes he is bigger than the club itself.

We don't need a GOD figure at Leicester.

How many other managers are lovely, caring people who do exactly as the fans want?

We might improve under a new manager but anyone expecting a non-arrogant bloke who admits all of his mistakes is pissing in the wind. Believes he's bigger than the club lol Yeah, this is a man who often let his assistant take the post match interviews after a win and usually always fronts up after a defeat, really basking in his own glory above all others.

The manager picks the team, and the way he wants them to play, he decided what players he wanted to bring in.

In one, NP got lucky last season, it all went his way, in contrast the season before and this current season things haven't and he's clueless tactically to be able to change it.

Let's not feel sorry for him, he managed to get a big contract on the basis of last season as did some very mediocre players.

The love in is over, I said he's was poor all along

time to cut our losses and get rid, he can take his back room yes men with him too!

Posted

Pearson was lucky because he won games with mediocre players.

Yeah, ok, can't quite work that one out.

Still, the kid loves Billy Davies which suggests he doesn't know much.

That's just ridiculous. To win any league, at any level, is not "lucky". Especially with how we did it.

And, "the love in is over". Was there ever a "love in"? The guy took us from the third division to the first division (first time in ten years by the way), in six years - well four actually considering he was at another club for a year and a half - so of course he's going to be admired and respected. Well, by any normal fan anyway.

It gets to a point where your constant moaning and negativity is just sad. It's like you wish us to lose under Pearson.

What the **** are you talking about? That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.
