MC Prussian Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Looking up the rules for match-bans, I went to read up on it on to the FA Website. There, I found interesting statistics. As a matter of fact, alongside QPR, so far we are the most disciplined team in the Premier League this season: http://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/fairplay This leads me to the question: Should we be more clever as far as "smart bookings" are concerned and get into other teams and play it a harder way? Are we playing it "too nice"? Would this see us out of the relegation zone? It's clear to see that on a sportive basis, we just cannot compete with the best teams in this division and we've been giving the ball away too easily in games against teams that are about our weight. When I look at the results, we're not too far off in total, but might there be something missing to give us the extra edge - could this be stopping play and taking the flow out of other teams' attacks by being more ruthless in man-to-man contact?
cjslcfc Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 It certainly seems to me that we don't foul nearly enough. Pretty much all the teams we have faced this season have fouled, time-wasted, feigned injury to waste some more time and generally slowed the game down. Virtually every team from QPR to Man City have come and done the same thing. Maybe we are too nice?
Bert Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 We're not horrible. Not enough anyway. We've got Wasyl who will do it but who else? It's how Stoke established themselves. Teams hated playing against them because they were so physical.
JIMMYWILLIS Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Powder puff team through the middle and atrocious at set pieces either end due to lack of physical presence. It's unfortunately a big part of the premier league game to have a few giants
st albans fox Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 i posted this weeks ago - we could have got a point at newcastle and villa had we 'taken one for the team'. probably more illustrations aswell. i am beginning to notice us being a bit more streetwise. perhaps this comes with experience at this level. however, against the champions yesterday, we managed to avoid any yellows. cant imagine a MON side doing that against a top team.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 One thing that I've noticed in multiple games this season and I may have mentioned it before is the amount of times that opposition players seem to go down for a prolonged period just as we're starting to get on top & build some momentum. It happened when we played Burnley, it happened multiple times vs QPR, it happened yesterday a couple of times & I'm sure it happened when we played Sunderland and West Brom too. We then seem to give away possession needlessly when the game restarts again and lose the ball. It's massively frustrating.
Jay Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 I have been saying this for a while we seem somehow to honest we are not clever enough at the awful side of the game, clever fouls, trying to stay on our feet instead of falling over, time wasting, slowing the game down all the horrible stuff that every team seems to do in the premier league
josh_baskin Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 I would disagree, think we ticked everyone of those boxes with or performance against Man U.
ScouseFox Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Vardy doesn't hit the deck enough for a prem striker. that little kid who played up front for city yesterday knew he'd never outmuscle/jump was or wes so every time the ball went near him he just fell over and got a ridiculous amount of decisions. Vardy gets nudged by kompany and instead of falling to his arse tries to keep hold of the ball, we lose it an they go up the pitch. nobody wants to see us cheat it's just a shame everyone else does.
BlackburnClaret Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Vardy doesn't hit the deck enough for a prem striker. I actually pissed myself reading that.
Guest ttfn Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 I actually pissed myself reading that. Coming from a fan of a club who directly benefited from him staying on his feet last season this is a strange comment.
BlackburnClaret Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Coming from a fan of a club who directly benefited from him staying on his feet last season this is a strange comment. I'd argue the opposite, his dives probably cost us the title.
ScouseFox Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 I was mainly talking about yesterday's game, for a ref who must've given a record number of pointless free kicks I can barely remember Vardy getting any, because the ref played by the classic premier league rule of "if you're not on the floor having a cry it's not a foul".
Guest ttfn Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 I'd argue the opposite, his dives probably cost us the title. Examples or GTFO. And you need to account for 9 points that we otherwise wouldn't have got here champ, this should be fun.
BlackburnClaret Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 He did have a little dive yesterday though, didn't he? Did he get booked? Are you actually saying you should cheat more?
Guest ttfn Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 He did have a little dive yesterday though, didn't he? Did he get booked? Are you actually saying you should cheat more? To be honest it it gets us out of this rut then yes. But I wasn't saying anything of the sort, I was just saying that your point was totally groundless.
BlackburnClaret Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Examples or GTFO. And you need to account for 9 points that we otherwise wouldn't have got here champ, this should be fun. 14th December 2013 14th minute.
ScouseFox Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 no I wouldn't want us to, it's just frustrating that everyone else does it and gains an advantage. much like in the Henry winter article where he said we don't surround refs like everyone else and that's a bit naive, we don't often give a red a decision to make it terms of taking a tumble compared to the rest of the league.
Corky Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 He did have a little dive yesterday though, didn't he? Did he get booked? Are you actually saying you should cheat more? From my seat I thought Mangala got the ball and Vardy went over in the follow through. Fair tackle and not a dive. Vardy dived for a free kick against Liverpool. He initiated the contact v Man United, wasn't a penalty. Dived last season? Not once. He was just too quick, both in pace and wit, for defenders and keepers.

Fair enough, having said that, we don't do any of those things either, in fact we are slightly higher in the fair play league than you. I actually had a Chelsea mate who was taking the piss that we can't expect to stay in this league if we didn't get more bookings. The problem being for clubs like us is that we can't afford suspensions, as mentioned further up the thread.

Nigel has instilled discipline and fair play attitudes , which is a good thing.. but he is in a minority of one in this league.

AKCJ Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 14th December 2013 14th minute. lol lol As you can quite easily see, Ben Mee does as Ben Mee does. Absolutely clatters Vardy and gets nowhere near the ball. The most stonewall penalty we've had in years.

"clever" fouls I guess but something we're not quite mastering yet. could be the difference between a few points over the season
