It is actually amazing how much that puppet looks Hodgson, most if the time celebrity/carton look a likes have a slight resemblance but every time you look at that picture it looks more like Roy every time

every single time

Tell me Simeone's won manager of the year? He's broken the ultimate dominance and looks to be doing his best to do it again this year despite having half of his team robbed by Chelsea.

Joachim Low wins it. Ridiculous. Obviously winning a World Cup is a superb achievement but not compared to what Simeone did.

I'd say it was because of the 7-1 demolition job they did on Brazil, but then David Luiz is in the XI so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That was probably the best 5/10 minutes I've ever seen from a team. As bad as Brazil were - it takes some serious composure to do that over and over again on a stage that big and not get carried away.

But Simeone for me has eclipsed it. For me he's the worlds best manager and has worked miracles with Atletico. If someone told you 12 months ago Germany won the World Cup and Atletico Madrid won La Liga and were a minute away from winning the Champions League too, who's manager would you have voted as being the best? Not to mention what he's done this season - I doubt they'll win the league but they aren't out of it and that's despite losing some key players. The bloke's a genius.

It's World Cup year, FIFA always pick the winning manager from that.

It's pathetic really, they would go with a World Cup winning manager over Pearson if he won the Champions league with Leicester.

Impossible to argue anyone but Simeone should win that award on merit.

Will you remember Low as a great for it? It may be unfair but I won't.

I absolutely love it as a tournament but it's shite for judging performance. It's a 7 game tournament at most. How can that be used to judge a whole year of performance?

Posted

Course not. When you look at the squad they have it would be criminal if they at least didn't go very close.

Simeone overhauled the biggest two clubs in the world with a budget similar to West Broms. It was unbelievable what he achieved last season.

Goals scored on the park don't count.

You'd think despite the obvious difference in physicality that women could match men in terms of technical skill but on the whole they don't. Women's football is conference north football x0.75 - it's just dull.

They pretend to care about the woman's game and expect us to, but when a woman scores, genuinely, the best goal of the year, they give it to a big name male player. Nobody cares about women's football.

It was only in there for tokenism reasons anyway.

There are loads of goals from parks on facebook every week and I've seen a few better than Roche.

There was one posted the other week where a guy beat three players then after flicking it over the last one's head overhead kicked it in from the edge of the box.

No, you would think that, just like you would also make a terrible analysis of the quality of women's football, and of the physical attributes of female footballers. How insecure do you have to be to be obliged to make that comparison, anyway?

I wouldn't think that, I would note the obvious differences in strength and physique between men and women and understand how that relates to technique, and I would let women's football stand on its own merits.

I will step back and concede that it is silly to argue about which goal is prettier than which, so I don't mean to be a total dick to you about this. But Roche's goal was ****ing brilliant, and it was a huge YouTube sensation, and IMO it was better than the other two finalists (although I can't say with complete confidence that it was the best goal scored in 2014). To say it was "tokenism" belittles a fantastic feat of skill. It would have been "tokenism" if FIFA made an exception and threw Marta in the men's World XI. But based on the criteria of the Puskas Award, Roche was more than a worthy finalist.

Well goals scored at the highest level and in a World Cup year should aalways feature.

You can say it wasn't tokenism if you want but if a bloke on a park scores a goal like that it simply isn't included and I think deep down we both know that. Roches goal was there because she's a woman, in spite of the fact I agree it's the best goal of the three. Although for sheer technique I think James gets better everytime you watch it) how on earth do you keep that under the bar from that angle and body position?

If I choose the best three goals of the year I've seen they would all be from YouTube, but you can't seriously expect FIFA to do that in reality.

Quality of defender has to be assessed as well. James made one of the best defences in the World look ridiculous. Roche knocked the ball over a player who probably wouldn't get in a Sunday league side.

Simple question though, if Roche goal is scored by a bloke on a Sunday league pitch do you think it's nominated with the other two last night?

Revealing of the way the players voted always shows just how big their egos are. Messi and Ronaldo not voting for each other?!

Come on now, you know you're the top two so put your petty rivalry aside and get real.

No idea what Hodgson was doing lol

Roche's goal was already an Internet sensation before FIFA picked up on it, so it isn't like they just plucked something out of the blue. You'd have to find me a goal scored off the parks (in a competition that's more legit that a Sunday League) that has anywhere near the amount of popularity that Roche's goal already had before I could answer your question.

But I would doubt it, not because Roche got special treatment for being female, but because there are just so many games, competitions, players, and goals in the men's game that it would be nearly impossible to squeeze in a lower division goal unless it was of the highest quality. Odds are there will be an equally good goal somewhere else up the ladder, and FIFA would pick those because fans would be more likely to have seen and enjoyed those goals. We all loved Knockaert's flick at Huddersfield, but that wasn't a FIFA Puskas Award nominee, and neither were a lot of other goals considered to be amongst the best scored in Europe in 2013.

It's a little disrespectful to Roche to make it seem as if she and her teammates were having a kick about amongst friends. The goal was scored in a game in Ireland's top division. It might not be the best women's top flight league around, but Roche and her team played in Europe, and she herself plays for her national team. If a player from Glentoran could almost win the Puskas Award, then I see no reason why Roche couldn't do the same.

"Quality of defenders" is irrelevant to this discussion (and yet another comparison between the men's and women's games that misses the point). The award criteria are quite simple. It also beat out van Persie's goal, so a lot of people agreed that it was a worthy pick and not a "token" selection.

Considering the way FIFA treats women's football... No, scratch that: considering what a clown college FIFA is in general, if they were really trying to do some "token" stuff for women, I could see them do a lot shittier of a job than they did here.

James's goal was really, really good, though. There's no denying that. This all reminds me about how fantastic he was during that World Cup; he should have also won the Golden Ball.

I wonder what it is about flair players that grinds Hodgson's gears. His selection of a top 3 is as uninspiring as an England performance.
