leicsmac Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 Perhaps this doesn't need its own thread but... "AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER. Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night. The End". A truly fantastic author and a courageous human being in the face of a horrible disease. Hopefully, his work will continue to bring joy to millions of people. RIP.
Buce Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 "Death isn't cruel - merely terribly, terribly good at his job." RIP.
Guest MattP Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 A great person lost. I hope he did somehow manage to go on his own terms like he wanted.
Fox92 Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 His twitter account just tweeted "the end"... RIP Terry, a great loss!
Guest kristianity77 Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 Oh what! Gutted about this, grew up with his Discworld books. Sad Times
Charl91 Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 Certainly does deserve its own thread. Very sad, he was my favourite author by a clear margin.
Renart Posted 12 March 2015 Posted 12 March 2015 “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away...” - Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man I imagine Terry Pratchet that your life will continue for a very long time....
Oxfordfox83 Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 RIP Sir Terry. Heroic, moral, and hilarious-a gateway drug to every good piece of literature I've ever read. Reread a couple of Discworld books in hospital recently, and the depth of thought behind them is incredible. A fully fledged genius, I will never stop reading.
Crinklyfox Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 I've loved the Discworld novels. Sad that there won't be any more. The world has lost a literary light. RIP.
Rincewind Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 This has spoiled my day. I wanted him to go on for ever. One of the few I will say RIP. I have all The Discworld books apart from the last couple. Part way through number 4 in the science series. A genius in the fantasy genre. A view of the world much like mine but I cannot put it into words as well. One of my favourite extracts 9Reaper Man?0 was where Death went into a bar and started complaining saying no-one liked him.He also had a great name for a horse, Binky.
Haydos Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 A poem (not my work)... The sun goes down upon the Ankh, And slowly, softly fades - Across the Drum; the Royal Bank; The River-Gate; the Shades. A stony circle's closed to elves; And here, where lines are blurred, Between the stacks of books on shelves, A quiet 'Ook' is heard. A copper steps the city-street On paths he's often passed; The final march; the final beat; The time to rest at last. He gives his badge a final shine, And sadly shakes his head - While Granny lies beneath a sign That says: 'I aten't dead.' The Luggage shifts in sleep and dreams; It's now. The time's at hand. For where it's always night, it seems, A timer clears of sand. And so it is that Death arrives, When all the time has gone... But dreams endure, and hope survives, And Discworld carries on. RIP
Captain... Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 A sad day indeed but we shouldn't dwell on the fact his life has ended but just be grateful that it ever began and that he was able to contribute so much in his time on this earth.
Guest Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Death was one of the greatest book characters I've ever read.
BoneDog Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Sad news. He wrote some magnificent books full of great characters. Love Vetinari, Vimes, Death, Rincewind and lots of others. RIP
Captain... Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Death was one of the greatest book characters I've ever read. He was, and instantly recognisable by the simple technique of CAPITALISATION I would always read people's shouty comments on the Internet in the voice of DEATH until I started spending more time on the net and less time reading Pratchett.
Rincewind Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 The guilds were a great concept. The idea being that there are going to be thieving and murders anyway so why not keep it to those that have the right qualifications and set guidelines to how it can be done.
Buce Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 A petition asking Death to bring him back: http://m.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/31867210
Rincewind Posted 3 April 2015 Posted 3 April 2015 Just finished The Long Earth co-written with Stephen Baxter. Bought the follow ups from WH Smiths yesterday. Supposed to be a fourth and fifth Whether the last one will come about I don't know. The idea came when the two met at a convention and they discussed an unfinished idea written years ago by TP. SB added the hard core SF and Terry put in the humour side. Reading some of the tributes on a Facebook page and found this.
