The Year Of The Fox Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Not sure if anything has been posted about him after last night- Ive just got back from manchester, BUT.. How many more performances like last night does he need to put in to shown Sven we don't need a new keeper? Absolutely brilliant last night, though the penalty was a poor one. That diving save he made to hi left in the second half was brilliant.
VampLCFC Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Seems to be excellent from close range and with "one on ones" Poor from long range and anything from around the edge of the box
The Year Of The Fox Posted 19 January 2011 Author Posted 19 January 2011 Dont know if you've seen the ESPN commentary at half time http://www.mysoccerplace.net/video/manchester-city-vs-leicester But whoever is commentating thinks weale should've saved Tevez's goal!!
superfox1980 Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Seems to be excellent from close range and with "one on ones" Poor from long range and anything from around the edge of the box Totally agree. I don't think he's as good as everybody makes out, not that I think he's crap either. Just an average keeper and if the chance of getting someone better comes along we should go for it without a doubt. Thought he should have done better with Hume's effort on Saturday too.

Savage said Tevez's shot should have been saved. Said Weale had chocolate-fingers.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 19 January 2011 Author Posted 19 January 2011 Savage said Tevez's shot should have been saved. Said Weale had chocolate-fingers. It sounded like Savage but didn't say that as I thought he just worked for the BBC
AmyLGK Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 It sounded like Savage but didn't say that as I thought he just worked for the BBC Yeh it was that dick head Savage! Chocolate fingers?!?! More like he has a brown nose.............!
MrSpaM Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 I have to agree with the first poster to be honest. After seeing the apparently "world class" Kirkland in goal for us i don't think we'll find a better keeper than Weale in this division. I had high hopes for Kirkland coming to us, but i found myself crapping myself every time he had to make a save, he seemed to let in more shots than he saved too. At least I actually feel somewhat comfortable with Weale in goal. He gets beaten from long range a bit too often, but surely thats more the defense's fault than his? teams shouldnt be getting shots off like that in the first place. As for Teves' goal last night, i think any keeper would have struggled to stop that.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Savage is just bitter we didn't pick him up when he wasn't getting a look in at Derby during our League One season. I think it's funny, in a 'I pity how pathetic you are' sort of way.
Jackirius Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 It was a good thing they didn't take many long shots.
Haydos Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 I have to agree with the first poster to be honest. As for Teves' goal last night, i think any keeper would have struggled to stop that. Don't remember anyone calling Kirkland world class. I'm still on the fence with Weale though. While he does make some world class saves he can be a liability from outside the area. - Tevez's shot, don't think you can fault him for, although if he was an inch or two taller I think he'd be getting to it. - Vieira's he could do nothing about. - Johnson's he could do nothing about. - Kolarov's is possibly an example of where he lets us down. From this image you can see how far right he is. He has a clear line of sight to the ball and has no reason to not be just right of centre. Where he's standing he would barely even have to dive if the ball went to his right but if it goes to his left like it did he has no chance.
nickelbyfox Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 I think he is a decent keeper, but talking from the first game of the season and Whittinghams goal for palace, he does seem vulnerable to long shots. Even Sinclair for Swansea. Goals against us seem to be goals of the week material every time
Dylan Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Still a bit on the fence with him too. The first half of last season he was immense- no way I'd have thought we'd even be debating his worth, but since then he's started to slack. Like someone said earlier, from long shots he's a liability unfortunately. I thought his positioning was TERRIBLE for their 4th yesterday. Everyone knew if would be going far post, yet he was positioned way too much to his near post giving himself no chance- made the strike look better than it was. At first, I thought he should've saved the first, even after a couple of replays, but was in an 'angry' mood that we conceded. On another day, he'd save that though I think.
Jackirius Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Just looking at the highlights again, the ball by King leading up the the Hobbs penalty, who is that aimed for? Shocking ball.
Haydos Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Just looking at the highlights again, the ball by King leading up the the Hobbs penalty, who is that aimed for? Shocking ball. If you watch after the interception you see Naughton's out of position, hence why the throughball could be played for Tevez. Must have been looking for hime. Awful pass though
sdb Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Yes he has lots of good games but he's prone to mistakes too. I love the guy, seems a real gent, was immense for his first 6 months with us, can still be brilliant, but he often costs us points too. Good enough to get us to the Prem? For me, not quite. Good enough to play in the prem? No. Harsh truth if we're really going all-out for the big time.

He's just crap with medium to long range efforts. One-on-one he's good, has real good reflexes with point blankers but seems to have short arms....or a slow dive with anything from 20 yards plus. I agree he's good for this division but not irreplaceable. With the resources we have we should be looking to strengthen. Alex Smithies would be my choice. Looks good most weeks & unlike a lot of young keepers, has plenty of experience.
filbertway Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 As has been said. I believe Weale is an excellent reflex keeper, however, he stays on his line too much for my liking. He seems indecisive and shots from outside the box seem to trouble him. Basically his footwork isn't great which costs him from long range, but anything within an area that he can reach he seems to have the reflexes to pull off brilliant saves.
Nath Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 To easily beaten from long range for me. should of saved Hume's shot against preston and i feel he should of saved the mancs 4th, could of done better with the first one too.

I agree too. I heard no-one talking about Weale making a mistake for Hume's goal, but when I saw the highlights I thought he defo should've saved it.
Bert Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 He's competent enough for this league. Not for the prem. Struggles too much from range.
Kitchandro Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 He just doesn't seem great at judging the flight of the ball (much like Gallagher when he tries to head it) which is why he lets in a lot of long rangers. Take Bristol City away for example, their bloke almost hoofed it up in the air. It was right above his head, and he could have easily just got back on his line and caught it, but he couldn't tell when or where the ball was dropping, so he just ended up sprawling and missing it. The Swansea goal was similar too, he didn't dive until the ball was almost past him. Having said that it's not as if most of the goals are down the middle and he's fumbling them in. He makes some close range saves as well which can get us points. He was ery solid last season apart from the infamous Derby game, which was his only real howler. He has made too many mistakes this season, and yes he should have done better with the 4th last night, but he seems to have put that howler stage behind him. If Sven shows him a bit of faith I'm convinced he's good enough to get us to the Prem. I'm not really sure how you can blame him for some of these goals though, Naughton's defending for the 4th was rubbish, we conceded against Swansea because we basically let them, we didn't get tight or close to them at all. Yes you can blame Weale partially but the defence needs to be doing a lot better, and the midfield.
cc_star Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 He's a good keeper, I'm glad Sven came out & backed him unless a world class keeper signings is on the cards, but I'm not blind to the fact that he doesn't boss the area, seems to miss a few long shots and could be improved on should the right person become available and importantly want to join us.
Captain... Posted 19 January 2011 Posted 19 January 2011 Naughton was at fault for the 4th goal, if you know your keeper is not great at saving long shots, don't let them shoot from distance. Naughton should have closed him down, I know there was a man out wide but better to push the ball out wide and let him cross it in than have a shot from distance without being under any pressure. (Apart from that incedent I thought Naughton was immense last night). If we replace Weale with Given then fair enough, but if he can work on his long range shot stopping in trainging then we will have a very solid keeper on our hands and there is no point bringing anyone in who is not of Given's quality. The defence must also be aware of his weaknesses and ensure that they don't give the opposition time and space to have a shot on the edge of the area/30 yards.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 19 January 2011 Author Posted 19 January 2011 The other sticky point for weale is he is quite slow at coming out the box and clearing the ball- can't remember which game it was recentley when that happened and they scored from it. Given has been the best keeper in the premiership since schmeicheal IMO
