Police in America

To be fair this incident doesn't sound racially motivated.

I agree, I don't think this shooting was racially motivated.

He was seen carrying a gun by police and was running away from them, so what other alternatives were there. Finally someone is on my wavelength here.

They knew who he was, had evidence on camera, so pick him up later?

Instead, several men pinned him down, one with his knee on his head. While on the ground, not struggling it seems, an undertrained, reservist goes to taser him but shoots him instead. He verbally acknowledges he shot him. The suspect says he has been shot. Yet, the men holding him down do not offer any medical support.

I think there are lots of alternatives to what happened.

1. Pick him up later.

2. Look to deescalate situations with conflict resolution, rather than knees to the head and paramilitary style policing.

3. Don't have pensioners work on violent crime cases.

4. Don't arm pensioners and give them the same powers as regular cops.

5. Provide medical support after shooting someone.

This is an interesting one, the Police run over a guy who has committed a number of crimes that morning, including stealing a rifle and ammo from a Walmart and subsequently pointing the gun at a cop and firing a shot in the air. He was ignoring commands to put the weapon down and was approaching a business area. Personally, I think they could of handled it a lot better, and the cops are lucky that no one was seriously injured, including themselves.

Yeah of course because not being poor automatically makes you racist. Well done ken.

No I did not mean that. In poorer areas people are in the same boat.Would have been neighbours for years gone to school and grew up together. Sure there are rival gangs but it is area zones related more than ethnic. It's like a cat not shitting in its own backyard.

The more educated people with more money are less likely to be ignorant on race. There are racists across the social spectrum and money does not come into it.

I suspect that you're very wrong on that ken, but I've never lived in a multicultural American ghetto so can't be sure.

Except poor areas in America are segregated by race, and they blame each other for their situation. Poor Whites blame Blacks for drugs, crime and violence; Poor Blacks blame Whites for oppression. They are far from believing they are in the same boat. And in some ways, that is the problem with the race issue, it deflects from the class issue. And some politicians probably want it that way. Not that it isn't a real issue that needs addressing, but that many of the issues are cross-racial, even if they disproportionately affect Blacks.

I lived in a mixed middle-income area, that bordered a rough area (Black) and a very wealthy area (White). It was a perfect example of how segregation works.

Check out the house prices, starting at $27k in the East and going to $2,45m in the West. I lived at 36 and Ednor, where the prices are now about $140k - $190k (we bought at $240k gulp).

Note that burglery and robbery happens in the West and violent crime in the East, no one really bothered with our middle-income area! http://crimebaltimore.com/#21218

I once got lost (pre-GPS era) driving from Washington DC to Baltimore Airport and dove through some areas I really shouldn't have been anywhere near, even in a car it was very intimidating.

Did you drive into Hamsterdam at any point? Plenty of BNBG around there to see.

This is a very good explanation of what's happening over here. We really have a hard time admitting that there is a class system in America, and some of these issues are economic and not racial. If you're born into the ghetto, given a substandard education, and never see a doctor or a dentist growing up good luck competing for a job against someone who grew up in an upper middle class family with access to quality education and healthcare.

Love to hear about your thoughts of Detroit, all I ever hear about it is ... just how terrible it is... the city is broke, there is no work....thousands of derelict houses, gangs and crime running rampant.

BUT... it cant be like that all over, im sure there is much to enjoy and be excited by.

Edit.  Hmm maybe an interesting topic?  "My Town"  ill go start it and see if anyone has anything interest? http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/topic/100189-my-town/

You're not completely wrong. There's a lot of good and bad in Detroit, it's just that the bad is a lot more interesting to the media. Also, I posted my bit about Detroit in your topic and now the topic is gone, weird.

Spot on... and what escalates the problem is that SOME white americans look at the class system see that it affects some black areas and realise there are not white ghettos in this area and , see the crime iisues in a black ghetto and jump to the onclusion that ' black people commit alot of crime sotherefor its because they are bacl and black people are criminals. Hate to say it but especially some of the older generation. I often feel very exasperated when trying to reason with them on this...

Guy dies after neck is broken in police custody in Baltimore:

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/22/us/baltimore-freddie-gray-death/

I've watched the videos of his arrest, and the police seem quite calm. One policeman on his back, pinning his legs back, like a scorpion tale, while another pins his head down with his knee (apparently, because this isn't clear). I do think this procedure must have caused his death, it doesn't look comfortable and I can understand how it could break someones back, but it doesn't seem overly violent to me. Still, there must be better ways to deal with a person other than knees to the head/neck, scorpion pins, or other types of holds by multiple policemen. Not including taser or shooting before anyone suggests them!
