ozleicester Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Im hoping some of the wonderful folk of FT can assist. Im back for the December games, which will see me with a week to fill in Liverpool (18th - 27th). Any suggestions are welcomed and we have a car so trips away from the city will also be fine. What is there to see in the city?, (we did a lot of the Beatles stuff last time and we arent big nightlife people). History, arts, culture (yeh who'd have thought it) are more the thing. Would I be better staying somewhere outside the city and just driving in for the games? Any ideas on a 9 day tour will be appreciated .. hmm just thought about a trip to Dublin.... worth it, much to see or do? (oh if anyone needs a house sitter in Liverpool 18-27 December ) Thanks in advance
Unabomber Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Swear there's a weird scouser who posts on her occasionally, his name escapes me though.
SystonFox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Dublin is wicked. But expensive. Did it with the Mrs a few years back. Temple bar area. Guiness storehouse. The old prison. Open top bus tours, so much walking done that weekend. Never done the touristy thing in Liverpool so sadly cannot offer advice, but as Una says, there may be some Scouse reprobate who can offer some?!
kingcarr21 Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Ive just got back from a weekend away in Manchester. Some good restaurants and bars to visit. I went into the Football Museum which is 150 years of football memoribilia. Free to get in they only ask for a £3 donation. Really good with interactive stuff and plenty to see. Very interesting. If you like architecture me and the wife took a trip to the John Rylands Library. Now we dont read books but we were told to just go and admire the building itself. Wow. You just have to appreciate the effort that went into creating such an amazing building. Well worth a visit and free. The cathedral is always worth a visit. Im not religeous at all but it is still a beautiful building to admire. All in all was a great weekend away. I would certainly suggest a drive to Manchester.
Soar Fox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 history arts culture? dont; ask me for advice Bars, casinos, strips clubs? Perfect person to ask?
Voll Blau Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Went to Formby Point the other week, that was nice. Southport's OK too but I imagine both are a bit wank in the winter.
Frank to be Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Step one: get out of liverpool Step two: enjoy no longer being in liverpool
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 go in the philharmonic and look at the natty urinals
Soar Fox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Go to the Brookside cul de-sac. Probably my favourite soap in the 90's
ScouseFox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Step one: get out of liverpool Step two: enjoy no longer being in liverpool dont; do this. I will have a think and write something actually useful when I'm not in work. All I'll say for now is it'll be boss.

ScouseFox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Do they still have to yellow duck marine boat? My sister went on it a couple of times when she lived in Liverpool. As far as I know, no, cos it sunk like three times in a month a few summers back and they found out it'd never even come close to passing any safety inspections. Might still be going though, they deffo stopped it for a bit.
stripeyfox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 Some great museums in Liverpool. The new (ish) one "Museum of Liverpool" is pretty good and the maritime museum and museum of slavery are very interesting. The Slavery museum is certainly thought provoking and I found quite emotional. It's a great city. Everyone we encountered was friendly and eager to help and almost universally bursting with pride about their city.
ScouseFox Posted 6 July 2015 Posted 6 July 2015 ok basically what you need to know is this is the best city in the world, as you will be told by pretty much everyone you meet here, as stripeyfox said. there is a lot of stuff to see and do as you'd expect. for history/arts/culture, as has been suggested visit one (or all) of the museums around town. there's a basic museum that you'd find in most big cities, there's the slavery museum, the maritime museum, the beatles museum and a war museum. the slavery one is different to most things you'd probably see. music wise it's obviously very beatles dominated, and you've said you've done that side before (although i'm sure some would argue you can never fully do the whole beatles thing ). there's the museum/places in town as well as the out of town tour down by woolton/allerton that takes in lennon's house, st peter's church and penny lane. that'll end up with you being in walking distance of calderstone's park, which is always beaut in the snow/frost of a winter. probably see a liverpool player or two there as well. go and see the cathederals. they are both very, very different in history and design but equally as cool. i can't remember how you do it but you can get to the roof of the anglican one (the older one) and see for miles. possibly less fun if it's cold and raining like it probably will be . town's always buzzing around christmas as you'd expect, there's markets and general street fun going on, could probably spend a whole day just walking up and down church street sampling foregin foods and watching crazy people dance or perform in the street. go to FACT for a morning and catch a film or check out an exhibition, then walk up and down bold street and check out the independant cafe/coffee houses to warm up. http://www.fact.co.uk/about.aspx there's lots of theatres, but obviously it'll be panto season so not sure if there's gonna be much sofistication to be found in any of them art galleries/shows all around town, as well as places like st georges hall that always attract visitors. http://www.visitliverpool.com/things-to-do/attractions/galleries is a list of all your arty places, obvious ones like the tate and the walker, but like they say i'd check out the people on the crosby beach. surreal but quite cool. will deffo be cold though! chinatown is worth a stroll round, it's just town but everything is chinese. chinese shops, chinese restaurants, chinese music & chinese people. pretty cool novelty. that's at the top end of town, whilst down the bottom by the river is the docks area (obviously) which is more expensive but classier, if you want a nice bite to eat or a fancy drink with the fancy types. obviously go to the football. there's probably loads more other than the obvious stuff but most my extra inside info is where to be at about 3 am on a saturday. where to stay isn't really my area sorry, all i've got is either my house or any student house you can effectively break into . as has been said manchester is a great city, you can drive obviously, but a train from lime street only takes about 45 minutes and if booked early can be as little as a fiver. other places you can get to easily and might be a cool day/night trip are dublin, belfast or the isle of man. any questions then go for it i'll try and answer.
