A week in Liverpool?

ok basically what you need to know is this is the best city in the world, as you will be told by pretty much everyone you meet here, as stripeyfox said.

there is a lot of stuff to see and do as you'd expect. for history/arts/culture, as has been suggested visit one (or all) of the museums around town. there's a basic museum that you'd find in most big cities, there's the slavery museum, the maritime museum, the beatles museum and a war museum. the slavery one is different to most things you'd probably see.

music wise it's obviously very beatles dominated, and you've said you've done that side before (although i'm sure some would argue you can never fully do the whole beatles thing :D). there's the museum/places in town as well as the out of town tour down by woolton/allerton that takes in lennon's house, st peter's church and penny lane. that'll end up with you being in walking distance of calderstone's park, which is always beaut in the snow/frost of a winter. probably see a liverpool player or two there as well.

go and see the cathederals. they are both very, very different in history and design but equally as cool. i can't remember how you do it but you can get to the roof of the anglican one (the older one) and see for miles. possibly less fun if it's cold and raining like it probably will be lol. town's always buzzing around christmas as you'd expect, there's markets and general street fun going on, could probably spend a whole day just walking up and down church street sampling foregin foods and watching crazy people dance or perform in the street.

go to FACT for a morning and catch a film or check out an exhibition, then walk up and down bold street and check out the independant cafe/coffee houses to warm up. http://www.fact.co.uk/about.aspx there's lots of theatres, but obviously it'll be panto season so not sure if there's gonna be much sofistication to be found in any of them :D art galleries/shows all around town, as well as places like st georges hall that always attract visitors.

http://www.visitliverpool.com/things-to-do/attractions/galleries is a list of all your arty places, obvious ones like the tate and the walker, but like they say i'd check out the people on the crosby beach. surreal but quite cool. will deffo be cold though!

chinatown is worth a stroll round, it's just town but everything is chinese. chinese shops, chinese restaurants, chinese music & chinese people. pretty cool novelty. that's at the top end of town, whilst down the bottom by the river is the docks area (obviously) which is more expensive but classier, if you want a nice bite to eat or a fancy drink with the fancy types.

obviously go to the football. there's probably loads more other than the obvious stuff but most my extra inside info is where to be at about 3 am on a saturday.

where to stay isn't really my area sorry, all i've got is either my house or any student house you can effectively break into lol. as has been said manchester is a great city, you can drive obviously, but a train from lime street only takes about 45 minutes and if booked early can be as little as a fiver. other places you can get to easily and might be a cool day/night trip are dublin, belfast or the isle of man.

any questions then go for it i'll try and answer.

You sure got some hidden depths.

How about a day trip to Belfast? I bet their titanic museum is worth seeing.

Visited Liverpool a few times for little weekend getaways, it's an awesome city. Loads to see and do, great for shopping and excellent choice of bars and restaurants all over the city. We always stay at the Staybridge suites near the Albert Dock area which itself has a good buzz with plenty of places to eat and drink and a 5 minute walk from Liverpool One shopping centre. As ScouseFox said, the cathedrals are worth visiting and there are loads of different Beatles tours to go on. The China town area is worth a look for a decent well priced feed too.

Also Chester is half an hour and a fiver return on a train and is tidy, what with its history an Roman stuff. Pretty place too.

Thanks, that looks a definite option

A day trip to Blackpool????

Cheers, just not sure about Bpool in December?

Yeah didn't think about when you were coming. Blackpool in December is definitely not worth it, everything is shut and weather (wind in particular) is ridiculous.

Would be interested to know Stan's thoughts on what to do for a week in Bedford.

I went to Bedford once but it was closed...

I spent a weekend there a few years ago and I must say, I feared the worst.

But it's a great City, the centre and the docks make Leicester look horrendous and is a great place to spend a few days.

The only issue is there it is a bit like Glasgow as in you have the good areas and really bad, so you need to stick to the good areas.

My mate did a decorating job up there a few years ago and had his van nicked. The following year he got the same gig and so this time he parked his van directly outside the police station. It was nicked again and when he went to report it to the police, they said that they had even been broken into and the police computers were stolen.

But with regards to shopping, bars, restaurants and general appeal to the City Centre, if Liverpool was say 8 out of 10, Leicester would struggle to get 1. And I am being serious here, it really is decent.
