When you're smiling

Yeah good idea actually.

You're right - it's not the song itself but how it's sung that is the problem. And the jazz hands. They definitely need to go.

If it could be sung to the same sort of tempo as 'you'll never walk alone'  it could be pretty awesome...

The whhhhhhollee wooorrrld smiles withhhh youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

A LEICESTER!!

Now this is a much more sensible post than your first one......

All the words need to be made longer. It's not just about singing it slowly, it's about exaggerating the words so they sound passionate. And people need to SING it, not just say (or as you say, mumble) the words. People often seem afraid to sing in tune. It's not feminine to sing in tune!

The way it should actually be sung has probably never been sung before, tbh.

It's probably rushed through because people aren't confident with the words.

Almost everyone in this thread has posted different lyrics!

True to an extent I'm sure. But I think equally people aren't comfortable with the tune. We don't really sing it in tune, so people feel the need to get through it to avoid sounding awkward.

Once we've decided the words we need to almost revamp the tune a little bit and work on it outside the ground.

Ok, I'm an old git and the memory may be going, but this is how I remember it sung in the late sixties and early seventies in the kop.

And when it was sung by a few hundred the hand movements looked good and it certainly was original.

1. Sing it slowly

2. Keep the hand movements

To slow yourself down say the numbers in brackets in your head, try it now.

When you're smiling (1)

When you're smiling (2)

The whole world smiles with you (3,4)

When you're laughing (1)

When you're laughing (2)

The sun comes shining through (3,4)

But when you're crying (1)

You'll bring on the rain (2)

So stop your sighing (1)

Be happy again (2)

Keep on smiling (3,4)

'Cause when you're smiling (3,4)

The whole world smiles with you, la, la, la, la, la

The whole smiles with you la, la, la, la, la

The Whole. (Pause and put Hands up, hands down)

World. (Pause and put Hands up, hands down)

Smiles. (Pause and Hands up, hands down)

With. (Pause and put Hands up, hands down)

Yooooouuuuu (jazz hands in the air)

I went to the sports book shop in London many years ago called 'Sportspages' it had a book about football chants/songs. It gave all the general stuff then gave the signature song from different teams. Under Leicester it had When You're Smiling. The books author particularly thought the hand movement bit was highly original with little else like it from other teams.

Thing is there is a difference between singing it slow with passion and leaving long gaps between lines which just makes it extremely drab.

The point of singing it slowly is elongating the words.

Can you remember what the book's called? Wouldn't mind getting a look at it

Sorry, no I can't ( it was a fair few years ago).

They also had a stand with clubs fanzines, I rather childishly put copies of 'The Fox' in the front of the forest fanzine section.

Ok, so I'm easily amused but this has made my day  :)

This does need to be sung more often. It's unique to the club and does sound great. It seems as though we need to increase the awareness of it as its fading away more and more every season.

Wonder if union fs could help?

I don't care how unique or old it is, it is fading because nobody joins in with it. 1. Because the words are too complicated, so much so that even super fans on here are disagreeing. 2. Even when it is sung it sounds and looks totally garbage.

It just doesn't suit a football chant/song like 'you'll never walk alone' does, no matter how much you slow it down it speed it up. Give it up.

Totally disagree with this.

The words aren't complicated at all it's just a lack of clarity between fans and I personally really like it.

If it was sung as loud as come on leicester boys or the boys in blue it would be fantastic.

Complicated?! Is English not your first language then?

This is precisely why our songbook is weak. Let's all just chant we love you over and over again. Borefest

At least two or three good, new, original chants have been introduced in the past season alone.

Spot on. The words here might vary ever so slightly from one singer to another but no one will be able to notice in a loud rendition so small differences do not matter and the point Voll makes around new songs such the Dusty Springfield cover are absolutely brilliant! In When you're smiling and only love the boys in blue we have two songs unique to Leicester and we should make more of them

^ This i've been singing "The Leicester", others have obviously been going " We're/A Leicester" for years and i've never noticed. It is such a minor thing anyway.

We have to get this going again, this is our YNWA.

We can't just throw the towel in because some of our fanbase seem to struggle with anything having more than four lines.

Don't know why the club don't print the words in the match programme? Or print on the back of the clappers?

Might be worth a go..also a decent version recorded than that jersey budd rubbish

I think the quicker it fades away the better.

It is just an incoherent mumble from start to finish - especially the middle bits which sound like:

But when you sight him,

Yule Brinner the drain

So stop your whining

You'll bring it again...

i'm not surprised to see that different fans are singing different words. I've been attending matches since 1985, and until I read this thread I had no idea what the middle lines actually were...

When you compare it to the massive ranging anthems such as "You'll never walk alone" or Stoke's 'Delilah" it sounds rubbish. it's just not a song that can be sung on the terraces.

Get in the bin.

This is the one and only song that is original/unique to Leicester fans and you want to bin it? Nonsense, we should be proud of it and sing it much more often.

It is part of our terrace history/culture.

Because it's obvious from this thread that no one knows what the actual proper words are for it.

This song will never get sung en masse the way it should until we decide what we should be singing!

Doesn't matter how many different 'versions' there are. The difference between them is a couple of words here and there. If the song starts up a bit more often it will catch on with more people. Playing the original song before kick off would be a start.

We used to put porn mags in copies of the Leicester Mercury when we were kids.

This a thousand times over. We can't ditch it because the 'words are too complicated', as someone has already stated, it's English.

Myself, I loved it when we use to sing it slow and we put in the hand waving correctly (see my post a page or so back).

However, I would also be happy if we just sang it.

It is ours, it is original. I've no problem with us singing/chanting the variety of things that most teams do, but it would be nice to have our own original song.

The link below has a version at a good pace.

Hope the link works, I've not tagged a YouTube link on here before.
