Fox Ulike Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Always been "The Leicester" to me as well. Real shame we can't get organised and get this sung en masse a bit more, it's unique to us but seems to be fading away. I think the quicker it fades away the better. It is just an incoherent mumble from start to finish - especially the middle bits which sound like: But when you sight him, Yule Brinner the drain So stop your whining You'll bring it again... i'm not surprised to see that different fans are singing different words. I've been attending matches since 1985, and until I read this thread I had no idea what the middle lines actually were... When you compare it to the massive ranging anthems such as "You'll never walk alone" or Stoke's 'Delilah" it sounds rubbish. it's just not a song that can be sung on the terraces. Get in the bin.
old koppite Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Definitely never "we're Leicester " back in the 70s. Thinking back now, for me it was more likely " a Leicester", but can imagine it being "the Leicester". You younger lot have to remember it originated in a completly different era. Pen 3 in my day was only for spotty teenagers up to mid twenties, 95% male, vast majority from working class inner city areas and the big council estates. They weren't bother with the correct grammar, or this doesn't quite sound right! Maybe " a Leicester" gave it a "harder" ring to it? There was a time when the London teams' fans were seen to be trendy/cool - we'd copy their songs a lot- perhaps the "a" gave "Lestah" an edge. Funny how you can hear songs diiferently. Back then, I always thought it was a bit soft to chant " Ma Leicester", until my older brother pointed out they always sang it when a woman walked in front of the Kop and it was, sorry PC brigade, "Molestah". Or maybe we were both wrong and they were singing "aLestah"!
Countesthorpe Fox 1884 Posted 13 August 2015 Author Posted 13 August 2015 Well I'm young and I've always sung the Leicester
Fox Ulike Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Well I'm young and I've always sung the Leicester Nah it's definitely a-Leicester. These things go back donkeys years when people did actually used to speak like that. It probably dates back to at least the 1950s when Chuck Berry would sing about "a rocking and a reelin'...

Wow. A song that is OURS totally unique to Leicester City and you want to bin it off.

AKCJ Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Come on then master of chants. Why don't you post the completely 100% proper way of chanting When You're Smiling then? Calm down. Just have a think about what actually makes sense.
Guest Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Anyone know when exactly we started singing this song?

AKCJ Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Never heard that version before! Well, as it's the official version i'm slightly sceptical.

World. Smiles. With. You. We're Leicester We're Leicester We're Leicester The above is how I Remember it, and Ive been going down since 1960.... Like a couple more songs, it could of changed in the 70s, due to the terraces Leicester wit.... mimiking the motorway sign....The North...The Leicester which had connotations to another terrace song. I must say, the younger lads n lasses are lagging behind, the past few years, no new additions to the terraces songs, for a while.

Yeah- that makes sense now as well- I was trying to think of a way to explain it, or a modern comparison the "kids" use in their lingo - just a little sound before words to be in the know. Obviously, if it was an orginal quirk that we started, it would've been some cool dude of the day shouting it and the rest followed.

At least two or three good, new, original chants have been introduced in the past season alone.
Fatbloke Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Don't forget the hand movements as well. Yeah DO forget the hand movements, it looks completely twattish !

I disagree with binning it, we should actually sing it more... but at a slower pace than what it currently sung at. Those other anthems you mentioned aren't belted out as fast as is humanly possible and until we slow it down, it'll never become an anthem. It has the possibility to be though.
AndWhat? Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Yeah DO forget the hand movements, it looks completely twattish ! Looks shit when only 15 people do it. Imagine all 7000 people in the kop doing it, would look quality

Yeah good idea actually. You're right - it's not the song itself but how it's sung that is the problem. And the jazz hands. They definitely need to go. If it could be sung to the same sort of tempo as 'you'll never walk alone' it could be pretty awesome... The whhhhhhollee wooorrrld smiles withhhh youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu A LEICESTER!!
FantasticMrFuchs Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 wys is a dying chant like molly malone, tip toe through trent etc. has no meaning whatsoever to lcfc. i'd happily see it binned off myself.
Moonstomp Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 It was certainly being sung when I started going in the late sixties. I seem to recall someone saying on here that it started with some old woman who used to belt it out in the Three Cranes pub, pre-match.Was probably me who said that and it was .... Can't remember her name but she sang it every time she was in there and the lads picked up on it and carried it on.The first version at the top of the thread is as close as it gets but truth is every chant we have is sung differently by so many people so as long as we sing it the variation probably won't get noticed.. Be great to get fans recorded and belted out instead of hey Jude at kick off
