Vlad the Fox Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 To be honest this is a great thread as if it keeps running it will raise awareness of WYS, and hopefully increase its popularity and use however fans groups (UFS) and those reading this thread need to make the effort to get it sung more regularly and at the right pace, maybe using pre match pubs and away games will start its revival.
Vlad the Fox Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 Can we start singing 'Those were the days' again. It's such a great song and tune and would sound great belting out of the Kop or L1, or even an away end. Even modify the words if felt necessary but let's get it going again. Someone can start a new thread for it if they feel it would help but come on, 'those were the days my friend'.
Jimbo Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 Ok, I'm an old git and the memory may be going, but this is how I remember it sung in the late sixties and early seventies in the kop. And when it was sung by a few hundred the hand movements looked good and it certainly was original. 1. Sing it slowly 2. Keep the hand movements To slow yourself down say the numbers in brackets in your head, try it now. When you're smiling (1) When you're smiling (2) The whole world smiles with you (3,4) When you're laughing (1) When you're laughing (2) The sun comes shining through (3,4) But when you're crying (1) You'll bring on the rain (2) So stop your sighing (1) Be happy again (2) Keep on smiling (3,4) 'Cause when you're smiling (3,4) The whole world smiles with you, la, la, la, la, la The whole smiles with you la, la, la, la, la The Whole. (Pause and put Hands up, hands down) World. (Pause and put Hands up, hands down) Smiles. (Pause and Hands up, hands down) With. (Pause and put Hands up, hands down) Yooooouuuuu (jazz hands in the air) A Leicester A Leicester A Leicester I went to the sports book shop in London many years ago called 'Sportspages' it had a book about football chants/songs. It gave all the general stuff then gave the signature song from different teams. Under Leicester it had When You're Smiling. The books author particularly thought the hand movement bit was highly original with little else like it from other teams. As cringy as it would be, we've got the drum, use it to keep a beat while everyone sings. I'd love to sing it, this is how I sing it in my head on the way to the ground (apart from I agree with those who say it's we're Leicester) but when it gets to singing it in the crowd, there's no point. A select few who chant it sing it way too quick, and it sounds like a jumbled mess. You end up just making random noises that sound like words. Imagine 7000 people singing that!!?? Slowed down it would sound great, and is ours, but people have been saying that for years, with numerous threads about it. It can go in the archive along with ideas of moving swapping the kop and the family stand and the thought of signing Nicky Maynard
AndWhat? Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 Drum could actually help slow it down. Sort of like in this video. The drum keeps it the right pace.
melrose Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 theres also a medium sized screen they could put the words on, although that might look a bit kareoke or panto singalong... Tell me that comment was tongue in cheek pleeease!

What did we sing after " we'd fight and never lose" - can't remember how we finished it. Used to love "Bertie Mee said... " - might be wrong but don't hear any other clubs singing a version of it. Just love the irony of it.
ImBlue Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 Complicated?! Is English not your first language then? This is precisely why our songbook is weak. Let's all just chant we love you over and over again. Borefest We don't know what were singing, nevermind everyone else. The last 3 pages of this thread have been everyone disagreeing about what the words are
Mortified Penguin Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 Yes please - great song . What did we sing after " we'd fight and never lose" - can't remember how we finished it. Used to love "Bertie Mee said... " - might be wrong but don't hear any other clubs singing a version of it. Just love the irony of it. I believe it ends "those were the days, oh yes those were the days" than doing 'la' to the same tune
Weller in Tights Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to drink a glass or two Then we'd go and wile away the hours Watching the boys in royal blue Those were the days my friend We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose Those were the days, oh yes those were the days La, la, la, la, la, la. (Continue) There were a few word variations of this, a bit like with 'When you're smiling'. Would love these old songs to be back in vogue. Could the guys at Union FS sort a Leicester Songbook? It could be put on line and then the web address with the reference to the 'songbook', could be passed around.
Vlad the Fox Posted 15 August 2015 Posted 15 August 2015 It would sound superb and very loud with thousands singing it as well. Come on union FS.

Weller in Tights Posted 17 August 2015 Posted 17 August 2015 I always thought it was 'once upon a time there was a spion kop' As I said, I remember 'those were the days' having a number of 'variations'.

stripeyfox Posted 17 August 2015 Posted 17 August 2015 I have never quite heard the full words to "Bring on the Sunderland", mainly due to the third line being sung too quickly. I get the: Bring on the Sunderland and Arsenal Bring on the Scousers by the score Barcelona, Real Madrid.... something something something And they won't beat the Leicester anymore... What is the missing bit?
Vlad the Fox Posted 17 August 2015 Posted 17 August 2015 Barcelona and Madrid they all may be mighty big, But they won't beat the Leicester any mooooooooooore.
stripeyfox Posted 17 August 2015 Posted 17 August 2015 Barcelona and Madrid they all may be mighty big, But they won't beat the Leicester any mooooooooooore. Thank you. That's been bugging me for 20+ years
LCFC FOX Posted 17 August 2015 Posted 17 August 2015 I think the chant is awful to be honest, some reason it's just not catchy and a dull chant imo
Stuntman_Mike Posted 17 August 2015 Posted 17 August 2015 Barcelona and Madrid they all may be mighty big, But they won't beat the Leicester any mooooooooooore. I always thought it was ''Barcelona, Real Madrid, they can make a mighty bid'' I think overall though, as long as people are joining in, it doesn't really matter if the odd line or word are wrong. We're making drastic improvements with our atmosphere at the moment, the only real criticism I have is how quick people chant! SLOW DOWN FFS
