Countesthorpe Fox 1884 Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 After the game on Saturday and hearing When you're smiling sung it got me wondering, how does everyone actually sing it and what are the proper words? I've heard serveral different renditions but here's how I sing it: When you're smiling when you're smiling the while world smilies with you When you're laughing when you're laughing the sun comes shining through but when you're sighing you'll bring out the rain so stop your sighing Be happy again when you're smiling When you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you The whole world smilies with you The.Whloe.world.smilies.with.youuuuu The Leicester The Leicester The Leicester
AndWhat? Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 When you're smiling When you're smilingThe whole world smiles with youWhen you're laughingWhen you're laughingThe sun comes shining throughBut when you're sighingYou'll bring on the rainStop sighing Be happy again Coz when you're smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with youThe whole smiles with you The Whole. World. Smiles. With. You. A LeicesterA Leicester Don't think any of my mates sing the same thing though
C-man Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 I've always sang 'when you're crying, you'll bring on the rain' and 'we're Leicester' x3 But most I hear double up on 'sighing' which I think sounds shit. I also think the main reason why we don't belt this out is because we aren't clear as a set of fans on what the actual lyrics are. Can anyone remember back to when it first started and what was sang then?
SemperEadem Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 When you're smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with you When you're laughing When you're laughing The sun comes shining through But when you're sighing You'll bring on the rain So stop sighing Be happy again Coz when you're smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with you The whole smiles with you The Whole. World. Smiles. With. You. We're Leicester We're Leicester We're Leicester Is what I have always thought it was.
BrummieFOX Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Always thought the last bit was, "The whole world smiles with you, and Leicester! and Leicester! and Leicester!"
AndWhat? Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Always thought the last bit was, "The whole world smiles with you, and Leicester! and Leicester! and Leicester!" Yeah I think it's that as well, but when it's chanted it's so bloody fast that it just comes out as 'A Leicester'
Aus Fox Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Always thought the last bit was, "The whole world smiles with you, and Leicester! and Leicester! and Leicester!" This The whole world smiles with you and Leiceter sounds much better
Bayfox Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 When you're smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with you When you're laughing When you're laughing The sun comes shining through But when you're sighing You'll bring on the rain Stop sighing Be happy again Coz when you're smiling When you're smiling The whole world smiles with you The whole smiles with you The Whole. World. Smiles. With. You. A Leicester A Leicester Don't think any of my mates sing the same thing though that's what I sing, A leicester fits, the leicester just about but can't say i've ever heard and leicester.
AKCJ Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 that's what I sing, A leicester fits, the leicester just about but can't say i've ever heard and leicester. How does "A Leicester" fit? It makes no sense.
Voll Blau Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 I've always sang 'when you're crying, you'll bring on the rain' and 'we're Leicester' x3 But most I hear double up on 'sighing' which I think sounds shit. Bayfox Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 How does "A Leicester" fit? It makes no sense. never said it made sense, although not sure and leicester does either, but people sing it so fast spiting A out seems to work.
Voll Blau Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 never said it made sense, although not sure and leicester does either, but people sing it so fast spiting A out seems to work. The whole world smiles with both you and the city of Leicester in general. Makes sense to me.
Buce Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 I've always sang 'when you're crying, you'll bring on the rain' and 'we're Leicester' x3 But most I hear double up on 'sighing' which I think sounds shit. Can anyone remember back to when it first started and what was sang then? It was certainly being sung when I started going in the late sixties. I seem to recall someone saying on here that it started with some old woman who used to belt it out in the Three Cranes pub, pre-match.
CovFox Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Think we all agree on most except: When you're crying, you bring on the rain So stop your sighing, be happy again That's what I sing and agree with C-Man and Voll (I sadly googled it years ago to check and Voll is correct, the original Louis Armstrong lyrics say 'crying') Also, like some others, I tend to just belt out 'A Leicester' at the end. Not sure what it means really but is probably just a quicker way of singing 'And Leicester'!? That's just how I picked it up years ago when first being around the people singing it I think. It probably originated as 'and Leicester' but gets chanted quite quickly so sounds like 'A' instead?

CovFox Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 but it's neither "A" or "and" Leicester. It's we're... That is honestly how I've always heard it - going back to the 90s in the kop and away games. I'm happy to be put right; I will listen more carefully in future!
SystonFox Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 I've always sung "THE LEICESTER" At the end. Never heard it as "we're Leicester"
Izzy Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 I've always sung "THE LEICESTER" At the end. Never heard it as "we're Leicester" Yep, always been 'THE' Leicester at the end for me for the last 35 years!
AndWhat? Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Yeah Never heard 'we're Leicester' either Can see how 'The' and 'A' can be mixed up when sung the speed it is!
Livid Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Always been "The Leicester" to me as well. Real shame we can't get organised and get this sung en masse a bit more, it's unique to us but seems to be fading away.
Kitchandro Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 If you speak to the older lot the original line was 'The Leicester'. Other than that I think baker is spot on.
AndWhat? Posted 13 August 2015 Posted 13 August 2015 Genuinely amazed at this thread. Come on then master of chants. Why don't you post the completely 100% proper way of chanting When You're Smiling then?
