davieG Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 Designer creates 'Tube map' featuring 200 pubs around Leicester By AlanThompson | Posted: September 25, 2015 Map1 Comments (0)Pubs have been given a Tube map overhaul, with a view to making it as easy as possible to find somewhere to enjoy a drink. More than 200 pubs across the city and its environs feature on the map, designed by maths teacher John Coats. Does Leicester have a good selection of pubs? Vote in our poll which can be found to the right hand side of the screen. The Pub Stops of Leicester shows the city's hostelries set out in the style of the London Underground map, with each pub marked as a stop. The tube lines follow roads, so each could be adopted for a pub crawl. John has produced a number of Pubstops designs for other cities since his first, for Sheffield, 10 years ago. He said: "I have to admit to being a bit taken aback at its success. "I think there is something about the local and the way pubs are such important landmarks in our cities that appeals to people. "It could make a superb memento of student days, not to mention being an inspiration for a night out." There are now more than 60 designs in the series. John said: "We're sorry it has taken so long but, hopefully, we've done Leicester's pubs justice with it." Brian Rigby, tenant of the Stamford Arms, in Groby, whose pub is featured, said: "As long as the information is correct and gives people the opportunity to travel with confidence that the business is open, trading and of good quality, it would be fine. "They did a similar thing in Nottingham along tram routes and that did get people out and about." Leona Fieldsend, duty manager at the Globe, in Silver Street, Leicester, said: "I like it. I think it's cool. "I've no idea what it will do for trade, but it will be good for people, especially visitors, to find their way around the city's pubs." Rob McCardle, editor of real ale group Camra's publication, Leicester Drinker, said: "I'm not sure who it is meant to appeal to, but it's a bit of fun, I guess. "My immediate thought is that some of it is out of date already. Something similar was abandoned last year as it was difficult to keep it up to date. "From Camra's point of view, a lot of those venues serve no cask ale, though things do change regularly. "I think we'd also be a little worried there seem to be so many venues on each line and some people might be tempted to use it as an ale trail and hope to have a drink in each. "Camra encourages people to drink quality products, but it is also a proponent of responsible drinking. "In terms of how the lines are organised, there doesn't seem to be much coherence in relation to public transport, either. "If it gets people to visit their local, that's great. The uptake would be down to price, I'd guess." Guest MattP Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 That is tremendous, I might have a count and see how many of the 200 I've done.

MooseBreath Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 That Camra guy really took it in the spirit it was intended
Merging Cultures Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 That Camra guy really took it in the spirit it was intended Such a buzz kill.Especially the bit about price.
Finnegan Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 There's been one of these in the corner of Criterion for ages.
Guest MattP Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 That guy from CAMRA was surely the inspiration for the Viz cartoon "Real Ale Twats"

Rincewind Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 The editor of the Drinker changes every month. I think they sell similar maps in the Criterion but do not include all pubs just the Real Ale ones. There is a Real Ale trail guide available in a few places. If you used that map most people would know which sell the quality stuff. When Leicester Camra did the Mild in May trails they did a different area on 3 different dates. Centre, North and South Leicester.
Guest MattP Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 lol One of the best cartoons they have done, was crying reading it a few years back on the train.
Rincewind Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 Although it is partly true. Real ale drinkers do not binge on Carling or special brew. They sit quietly in the corner of pubs with a half of each ale in groups of four or five stroking their beards discussing trains, buses and rugby. Off out now to have my beard trimmed and to see what new ales are on.
Darkon84 Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 lol One of the best cartoons they have done, was crying reading it a few years back on the train. They've had some absolute crackers, that's for sure. I just thought of that immediately after reading the quote above it Although it is partly true. They sit quietly in the corner of pubs with a half of each ale in groups of four or five stroking their beards discussing trains, buses and rugby. Off out now to have my beard trimmed and to see what new ales are on. I've seen plenty of people that drink real ale, acting boorishly, though in the main part, you're probably right there. I'm pretty partial to a good ale myself to be honest. If I've got time, I'll usually stop off in the Swan and Rushes for a couple before Leicester play and I've been to a couple of CAMRA events, though they have had a tendency to get a bit iffy after the ale runs out and people have to switch to the strong ciders! Enjoy your beer tonight Ken
SystonFox Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 I drink ale Ken. Not by the halfs. I don't have a beard. Often bounce around in me stone island for a right old tear up with some facking mugs. Mind you I do quite enjoy a can of cold carling tbqfh

I'm not into trains or buses but I know some people and they do the CAMRA pub crawls.I volunteer and there are some really geeky real ale types. They carry little bottles around with them label them so they can take samples home and rate and tick them off their wanted list. I don't go as far as this but I used to keep a record. Now I just have those I do not recognise. At fests you do get some that just go for the strongest. I think its to show they are manly. 'I'll have a pint of that 12% it'll go down well with the two 8% I had 15 minutes ago.' They are normally students in their 20's.. I was thinking of the 30 plus real ale drinkers being sensible but I suppose that applies to most plus 30's regardless of what they drink. There are quite a few of the real ale types who think they are immune from misbehavior because they drink it. They can be just as annoying.

Rincewind Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 I know someone who must drink 10 pints a day and it does not seem to affect him. He writes them all down on a notepad then transfers them to bigger notebooks at home. I am sitting in the pub and he drinks three to my one. He cannot be taking in the taste flavours etc I don't know how the ales can be appreciated drinking that quick.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 I'll have an ale sometimes, but you sometimes get stung with one that tastes like the stench of dehydrated lady piss, and you really wish you'd have gone the tried and tested Carling route
Frank to be Posted 25 September 2015 Posted 25 September 2015 I can't be the only one who prefers a nice cocktail over any of this real ale muck. Give me a Cosmo with a few raspberries over some dank old dog water any afternoon.

Expanding on that it's tragic that a village of Birstall's size has three (four / five if you include the Legion and the Social, which I don't) well average pubs. ***However the staff in the White Horse on most evening make up for it oi oi
