Grewks Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 That last 4-5 games has seen our play result in us falling deeper and deeper. Instead of pressing opposition high and as a team, we appear to sit off and only press rarely as individuals (mainly shinji). So why is this?
LCFC95 Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 I think Ranieri is trying to find a balance, with us conceding so many goals in the first half of the season he probably thought we wouldn't carry on winning if we were conceding so many. Now we've gone so defensive with less pressing we are conceding a lot less but struggling to score. I think in the coming weeks we will see that he has found a more balanced game and we see some solid defending and exciting counter attacking, I hope so anyway. I do think that fatigue does have something to do with it though as well, with there being so many games lately.
AyewJoking Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 can you press as a team and have a solid defence too?
My Nads Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 It looks like a change in tactics, but it's shit and I want to play how we were before Christmas.
LCFC95 Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 can you press as a team and have a solid defence too? I'm not saying we will get clean sheets and still score 3 goals, just more of a balance rather than one or the other.
Grewks Posted 17 January 2016 Author Posted 17 January 2016 can you press as a team and have a solid defence too? yeah......swansea away, newcastle away. Our counter attacking goals haven't come from long balls, but quick 1-2 touch passing.....e.g. Vardy v west brom from the half-way line.
Gerard Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 We haven't been pressing as much or playing as well but we look really solid as a defensive unit now. Give Ranieri time to execute the tactics and players to play it. He's managed the elite teams of Europe, he knows exactly what we're lacking and need to do but it takes time.
foxes21 Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Our early pressing game is not sustainable over the course of a whole season. Said it in another thread, but if we continued to play that way, the last 8 games we'd have nothing left in the tank. Since the Liverpool game we are keeping it tight, trying to keep clean sheets and nick a goal. With a bit of luck in the Villa & Bournemouth game, this style of play would have been successful. Our pressing game will return, but for now, especially with Arsenal & Man City coming up, we have to keep it tight and not lose. Its ugly, but it may well help keep us in the race for top four.
StanSP Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Tactics and injuries and change of personnel. Vardy not being fully fit takes a lot of our pressing game especially from the front. And it's not like soaking up pressure, getting men behind the ball isn't working. Players are adapting to it after playing the original pressing tactic and yet we've still only lost 1 game and kept 3 clean sheets (optimistic view). Our defence looks much better as a result of the tactical change but the obvious risk is that it provides more opportunities for opposition to come on to us and create more opportunities. Another reason it works well for us is that we can break on the counter extremely and frighteningly (for other teams) quickly. It's like a trick up our sleeve and we do use it well.
My Nads Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 It's the main role of a manger. Manage the players to get the best out of them. Getting the best out of our players is all out attack! If Ranieri is trying to change the style to a more defensive style, even if it's just a little bit, we'll lose our spark and it wont be easy to get it back. I hope we start playing exciting football again, before this scrappy mediocre way we've been playing becomes the norm.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Definitely not pressing all that much like before and not forcing as many mistakes from our opponents. Definitely think we are looking to consolidate what we have and going for clean sheets
Vardinio'sCat Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Vardy was doing more pointing than pressing today. He is fit enough to run when the ball comes to him, but he is the player that Jose asked 'Do you ever stop Fuching running?'... and he isn't doing it. I feel, with the benefit of hindsight), that he ought to have been benched a few games ago, with the much-improved Shinji the focus til Jamie is back. Think about it, he hasn't trained at all since maybe early December, so he has had maybe 7/8 days where he has fully turned the engine over, in 7 weeks. That is not enough to keep physical and mental sharpness. Its a amazing he can play 90 at all at the mo, most wouldn't be able to do this. I guess the medical staff are working him as much as they can, within the restrictions of his injuries, but you can only go so far with that. A shadow of his former self. But he is over the worst, thank god, because CR can't seem to do without him.
Vardinio'sCat Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Great effort with the goal though, still has his quality, bless him
trabuch Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Great effort with the goal though, still has his quality, bless him If that had gone in it would have been the goal of the season. As it was it was a goal in the end any way. If only he was allowed to take penalties he would be sorted.
Vardinio'sCat Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 If that had gone in it would have been the goal of the season. As it was it was a goal in the end any way. If only he was allowed to take penalties he would be sorted. It's worth mentioning that Shinji busted his ass to get to the follow up, he did look fit! I tend to agree on the penalty, with the benefit of hindsight. Desperately disappointing.
4everfox Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 can you press as a team and have a solid defence too? Pressing as much as we used to is risky because it creates holes and players get out of position leaving it at risk of exposure to an opposition attack. If you don't press you can maintain a solid defensive unit by inviting the opposition to attempt to break you down but that comes at the expense of being a regular attacking threat like we used to, so no I don't think you can press as a team and be solid defensively. Having said that I'd rather sacrifice the defensive shape to allow a more attacking pressing style.
HighPeakFox Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Scouse has it right. Vardy is coming back to fitness, we have nothing good enough to give him proper rehabilitation time. It will all be ok in time.
whoareyaaa Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 You can't press the better teams constantly as they have the players that could play the one pass and your 1 nil down. I think hes changed it over the Xmas period and it looked like we was trying to get back to normal ways yesterday.
Jackster21 Posted 17 January 2016 Posted 17 January 2016 Our defence at the beginning of the season was auful, which resulted in us winning 3 - 2 against Villa and 4 - 2 against Sundeland. Claudio has improved our defence however this made us play more defensive which has resulted in less goals scored and less goals conceded.
