UEFA Considering 2018 Champions League Changes

No way, the "Champions League" may be a fallacy in terms of title but (at the risk of being called an elitist) I want to see the best teams in top European competition. I want Barca, Real, Bayern, Dortmund etc etc.

(I want to see them on the proviso that they qualify appropriately through their league of course, not auto enrolled in Europe.)

European leagues outside of the top four/five aren't strong enough to sustain this. Astana v Barcelona in the first knockout round holds no interest to me. Barcelona v Atletico Madrid in the upcoming QF however does. Strongly.

The actual idea being mooted is terrible. I have no issues with a knockout only system but we know that'll never ever happen again. What they have in place now is probably the best format in terms of what's realistically possible, though I'd prefer no pots/seedings. Have the group stage as one giant draw of chance.

Maybe because you're not a supporter of Astana. It's sport, the teams short be chosen on merit, not who appeals to you personally.

A small part of me backs this super league that they so clearly want. If it means getting the Stillitano's and the like out of football and into their little bubble so we can play more of a sport than this shambles they're turning football into then I'm all for it.

Exactly. And hopefully take all the twatty facebook-banter 'supporters' with them to argue on Twitter over who has followed Chelsea or United longer in appalling English.

These so called super groups would be awful as they would end up with loads of dead rubbers from about gameweek 9 onwards.

They should do for like how the world cup and European championships is on like have a three week tournament in November where 32 teams only play each other once at the tournament will only be set in one country every year. The top four teams involved are allowed to have a break from the premier league during that period. Same for the europa league though that can take place in February with less teams.

Imagine if every 'big club' across Europe failed to qualify for the Champions League. They'd scrap the Champions League all together and create a tournament for teams based on history and stature wouldn't they?

lol

I can see where they're coming from; the emotional strain of the title race is getting to me, I wouldn't want to have to go through that every season just to so we can claim our rightful Champions League spot every year either.  It's about time somebody thought of the Chelsea and Man Utd fans - why should they suffer the ignominy of being left out of the CL just because they're taking a break this year?  It's so unfair.

It's sad that it would have to come to that but this season's irked me in some ways, because it's revealed that here are more seriously dangerous characters in this sport than I thought, many who seem to actually entertain the concept of fixing competitions if it means they can milk that extra few quid even though the whole thing is phoney as hell.

It just proves what a shambles it's all become. Despite the already filthy rich clubs having everything in their favour enough, they still want that bit more just to eliminate the possibility that the cash cow might have a slightly below par year.  Absolutely disgusting how many of these 'executives' and parasite cvnts are polluting the game already. If they got their super league maybe they'd all fvck off to that and we'd actually have a bit of a sport again.

Let these glory hunting parasites who have ruined the game (and they have, I'm not being reactionary) fvck off and create their own cvnt of a super league.

It should just go back to how the European Cup was. Each league winners, knockouts. Simple.

In theory I can see that but I don't entirely agree if I'm honest. I'd consider renaming it though if we're keeping this schedule, as petty as it sounds, doesn't add up that teams who finish 4th can play in the 'Champions' League.

Nah thats gash.

But expanding the tournament further would be even more gash.

Dont see whats wrong with the current format, works well IMO.

They're not planning changes to make it better, they want to change it to make more dosh.

Seriously though- I am not having it that one random season have got all bigwigs worried enough to change rules? Man Utd and AC Milan may have been shit for a while but until this season likes of Man City or Roma have taken their places and both teams are hardly what you would call 'minnows'.

It would take the integrity out the competition and would make for a weaker league system across Europe. If all the top teams know they're guaranteed CL football, then they would not bother going for top four in the league. There is no way clubs like us as much as I would like us to, be in this position at the expense of Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool..etc every season. This is true across all the leagues. So when it happens it should be rewarded accordingly. The top teams will be there season after season because of the players they can attract and the money they have.

Unfortunately for clubs like us, it would be extremely difficult to do it. They do not need to do this idea, and if they do believe me it will not work and destroy domestic competitions across the land.

I agree with the sentiment to revert the champions league back to its old European cup format, but I've enjoyed the Europa league a lot this year. The last 16 onwards have given us some really good ties. The only thing I would probably change is make the groups smaller so that stage of the tournament isn't as drawn out. I think the prize of automatic champions league is a great incentive for the secondary competition though.
