GaelicFox Posted 21 October 2016 Posted 21 October 2016 Hi All who live in LEICS I was hoping we could get some help with an issue that's effecting us and a great many families in Leics In September this year , Leicestershire County Council started charging schools for services for deaf children which were previously supplied for free. We have heard from other parents that deaf children are already experiencing cuts to vital support such as visits from Teachers of the Deaf because schools are refusing to purchase in the support. This issue is widespread and is effecting many local families. As I said Schools are now expected to pay for services for deaf children who do not have a Statement of SEN or an Education Health and Care Plan. We are aware that most deaf children do not have either of these mainly because of delays by schools to write them , with some pupils in the county waiting 2 years for one ! The issue has reached a critical level ,so much so that The national deaf children's society has started a campaign in Leics and I'm asking if you could Please click on the bellow link and email your local councillor today to ask them to stop this , bellow is the link and if you fill in your details and submit it , it will take you through to a new page with a generated letter to your local county councillor all you need to do then is click you agree and then click send/submit My daughter is deaf and its effecting us , would appreciate your support and we thank you in advance for your attention on this matter. Thanks again Gaelic http://e-activist.com/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=19&ea.campaign.id=57626&ea.tracking.id=Memsemail&utm_campaign=Leicestershire+Charging+Campaign+2+Oct+16&utm_source=emailCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=

Thanks there is a lot of disabled cubs out there and deaf children could be the start of some scary cuts in services , our disabled cubs need looking after thanks again
Great Boos Up Posted 21 October 2016 Posted 21 October 2016 I just told my wife Gaelic, she's on the case. The amazing work she's applied in Leicestershire for our autistic son is unreal. Children with needs are funded and you can ask where the money has gone or not been applied for. Google SENCO, your daughter will be allocated a person and get on their back.

As you might experience with your child, deafness isn't seen as "enough" of a disability by many. Unless you live in and around it people just can't understand the issues it causes. The changes in DLA over the last few years have targeted the deaf specifically to remove their support. So what you've said doesn't come as a surprise in the slightest. Will add my signature and get the Mrs to pass it around all her deaf friends and family to pass on.

Thanks for sharing that Babs yea im horrified now over the last 6 years to realise how poor a gig disabled people get in the "disability tree" its the ignorance and the lack of empathy is startling , if the teacher behaved like that about a kid in a wheelchair they would be sacked ! Thanks for your support
Countryfox Posted 21 October 2016 Posted 21 October 2016 Count me in Paddy ... will do in morning when room stops revolving.

My wife is also profoundly deaf since being a baby and the attitude is, well she can work can't she. Which she can and does, but her disability limits what she can do in a way that doesn't affect most people. She used to work in manufacturing, but we don't have those kind of jobs anymore, it's mainly the service sector in Leicester now, which... oh wait, requires communication skills. So of course deaf people should get assistance; especially when you consider what people do get assisted with. I'll get on it tomorrow Gaelic. Head too buzzing at the moment from Steve Mason concert. I assume you sign then Babs and Gaelic (sounds like a terrible folk duo)
Nalis Posted 22 October 2016 Posted 22 October 2016 Done Gaelic Fox, liked the 2nd point in your email about school performing differences between deaf children and non deaf children being down to a lack of understanding from educaters rather than the learning capabilities of deaf children, so true and why I'm in total agreement with this campaign. My parents are deaf and some of the stories they have told me about growing up as deaf kids are nothing short of barbaric. Getting caned on assumptions that they were idiots in class when they just couldnt hear what was going on.

Graces school are trying to say she has dyslexia and she hasn't , she just can't hear the phonic sounds clearly , it's shocking the poor ride deaf people get , I'd love someone to write a screen play for a drama about it because people would then see the issues I think it's the only disability with no sport allowance or dedicated sport group at the para-Olympics

GaelicFox Posted 24 October 2016 Author Posted 24 October 2016 Hi everyone I have fantastic news, I have spoken to county hall this evening and in view of the overwhelming response to the petition over the weekend , local councillors have been successful in having these charges suspended today and a full review of funding has been commissioned to see how the service is funded going forward , I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who took the time to sign the petition and lobbied their councillor , the little people win sometime !

Brilliant news! Do keep us updated as I am deaf myself so this is an issue that are close to my heart. I could go on and on about how much all cuts are affecting deaf people from in schools to in workplaces. There is also a specialised deaf school in Derby that you might would want to consider if things get worser in Leicester. Good luck!
