Sorry but people overuse the word 'scapegoat' on here. We've been absolutely shite this season and you don't expect any of them to receive criticism? Only Drinkwater has maintained the form of last season (as they say, class is permanent).
AKCJ Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Mahrez has been our only source of goals this season. He either scores or assists. We're struggling to score as it is and you want to remove our only attacking intent? Yeah, glad you're not in charge.
Slim Dog Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Drop Albrighton and play Musa/Gray in his place. For some reason Mahrez is being questioned and not Albrighton.
steflcfc Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 It's what you get with players like Mahrez, when his tricks come off they are awesome to watch, when they don't it's poor play etc. He is the only midfielder capable of putting a half decent ball in the box and also running at defences to pull them out of position. Apart from Drinky and Grey having 10 minute cameos we are extremely lightweight all over the park in midfield. So as fustrating Mahrez can be at times, whilst playing with the weight of 32,000 people expecting him to dazzle. He is one of the first names on the team sheet of available
blue army 1988 Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 If people can remember he was dropped early start of last season as well. Or maybe season before. And his form picked up a lot then.
cc_star Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Mahrez needs to do one of two things Stick wide, beat the fullback & cross... cutting-in becomes a rare unexpected event Play in a free role behind a lone frontman, probably Slimani... and both feed him & play off him The playing as wideman but constantly cutting in and facing 3 men is completely predictable... If Ranieri doesn't give him one fo the above 2 roles, just drop him
martyn Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Mahrez can be frustrating, but he is about the only player capable of creating anything resembling a chance in our side at the moment. Major difference this year has been the fact we don't, or are unable to transition from Defence to Attack quickly .Last year we'd get him the ball quickly, and he'd either be in space, or 1 on 1 vs a fullback where he's one of the best around. This year, we don't get him the ball nearly quickly enough and it completely stifles the best things about his game.

I won't deny that Drinkwater, Schmeichel and Slimani to a certain extent have been the only ones who have been consistent this season and Mahrez has been questionable choices more than once in a game. But I refuse to brand him as uninterested or not giving a damn about the team. He's still a major contributor to everything that hit the back of the net. I for one think he should release the ball more but in the current formation with the hoofball style that became the norm, expecting more from him is kinda absurd. Even more when he also has back track. Against Boro he was systematically doubled, tripled on. From what I saw he doesn't really trust Amartey and only passes to him when there is no other choice. The opponents don't even bother to look what's happening in the midfield or on the left wing because there is nothing to fear of. The spaces won't exploited anyway. They only need to channel him down the line and that's pretty much it for the team's attacking threat. Musa is slowly getting better and with better finishing could be the real alternative on the other wing. Gray is also promising but I have yet to see him consistently deliver 90 minutes, with the defensive duties on the top of that.
Ric Flair Posted 30 November 2016 Posted 30 November 2016 Rather than drop Mahrez because he is now ganged up on we should be exploiting the space this creates in other parts of the pitch but we aren't doing. We've so few technically gifted players that not playing Riyad would be an absolute travesty.
