Bellend Sebastian Posted 25 August 2017 Posted 25 August 2017 I went to the Victorian town at Ironbridge a couple of weeks ago, where they were selling chips cooked in beef fat. Best chips I've ever tasted. Is it easy to keep a cow in an average sized garden?

VLC86 Posted 25 August 2017 Posted 25 August 2017 Bit late here but is this a thread about strap ons?

LOL, he just said it was an experience, but wasn't mindblown. It had the texture of meat but the flavour wasn't quite 100%. He did also have crap tons of toppings on it!

Ones natural and does you good ones full of chemicals and gives you diabetes. Except the natural flavours and the ones in fanta are fundamentally the same - whether the limonene, citral and geranyl acetate (major flavourings in any citrus fruit) are extracted from natural sources or synthesised in a lab makes no difference to how healthy it is. Fanta is bad for you not because of its full of chemicals but because it's full of sugar (which is itself natural). Even then, for grass fed animals or synthetic the difference between grass and corn fed is the development of the animal: the exercise it gets and how efficiently it processes its food: if the synthetic meat can be grown to mimic the activity of muscles in grazing animals then it will be hardly distinguishable.

I can see how animal protein cells can be grown that are indistinguishable from the real thing. I can also see how animal fat cells can be cultured to produce fat that is same as the real thing. But can they both be grown together to replicate the fat that marbles through cuts of real meat. I don't enough about cell culture to know whether this is possible, or indeed whether it matters, but I'm pretty sure a slab of raw protein will cook differently to raw protein interspersed with fat.

It will, that's why the marbling of a cut is important. As to whether it can be grown to show that marbling, we'll see; but it's been possible to grow functioning heart tissue (http://circres.ahajournals.org/content/118/1/56) so I would hazard it's doable.
Guest the fox Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 Some don't get it, its note just the taste or look that matters, some people like me enjoy preparing their food a certain way, just going and buying meat, preparing it and knowing that the source of what you got is natural is pretty much half the enjoyment (even than half the enjoyment for some) Cooking and eating a proper cut of meat isn't just a routine, for some, its an experience.

You really do enjoy your meat.

But seriously I think you're the one who doesn't get it: I don't think people are suggesting we do away with all meats (maybe a couple but I think they know they're being unrealistic) but rather that if this stuff is viable and can be produced cheaply to scale then it could allow us to do away with the cruel intensive farming that currently produces most of our cheap meat. Unless this meat is next-level stuff there will always be a market for outdoor-reared, well treated animal products, that kind of goes without saying. In fact even if it is next-level there'll still be real-meat hipsters creating a market for old-fashioned animal products. Your proper cuts aren't under any threat.
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 Who, the fook, eats this and can honestly claim to enjoy the taste? Its like eating card..
Merging Cultures Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 Until it has been tested significantly, and proven without doubt that it is no more dangerous than 'proper' meat I won't be eating it.Sent from my Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) using Tapatalk

So is some meat; I don't really see the relevance of what 0.001% of the vegan/vegetarian meat production tastes like to you has. This thread is about attempts to develop new synthetic meat for the purpose of tackling important environmental issues and needless slaughter. The experts involved aren't just throwing together some mycroprotein and egg to make a reasonably priced cardboard alternative.
