What chance have players like Demarai Gray got when comments like these come out ?

Southgate should keep his mouth shut

That tagline doesnt really reflect what he said...

. “I think if we had to pick a 23 tomorrow, we would know what it is,” Southgate said. “We will constantly update that. Some of that will be on form but a lot of that will be on the players who we think are capable of performing on the biggest stage.”

I think if Gray continues to perform as he has he will get a shout for the next round of friendlies

Hang on, if you read the article he alludes to that he has an idea who it would be if the squad was named tomorrow that's hardly an offensive thing to say. I think this will be the biggest surprise in terms of an England squad for many years when we name it in May. We've a numbers of injuries right now to players whom ordinarily would have been a shoe in and we've absolutely killed it in the development squads and more and more players are getting a chance at club and country. I'd not rule out us going to Russia with a large part of this squad with single digit number of caps.

On the one hand that journalist has, predictably, totally twisted his words. What he's actually said is: “I think if we had to pick a 23 tomorrow, we would know what it is. We will constantly update that." So he's stated the obvious by saying he's got a preferred 23 now, but in the next 6 months that will change.

However, he does hint to what we already know - that actually he will be picking players who play for the bigger clubs: "Some of that will be on form but a lot of that will be on the players who we think are capable of performing on the biggest stage.”

I don't think it takes a code reader to realise what he means by the bit in bold.

Well if he's not 'close' to where he wants to be by now WTF have all the friendlies and watching games been about?

He added: “I think we would be very close to the 23 in March but there’s obviously four or five players perhaps that aren’t with us through injury now. So I don’t think it can be as clear-cut as that. But, for sure, I think in our minds we’re getting closer. We’ve almost got a big jigsaw puzzle now, we know how we want to play, what are the pieces that fit into it, who would be our preferred choices.”

If there is a player who plays for one of the big boys who is injured at the deadline then I guarantee he'll still get picked.

Regardless of what Southgate has said Gray needs to prove he can repeat his performance against Everton consistently to even get a look in.

If Gray rips it up for the rest of the season he will get in the squad, if he is inconsistent then he won't as we need more players you can rely upon, we have plenty who are capable of looking like a world better one game and dog shit the next.

He would have been called up for the Brazil match but all the pull outs led to Southgate calling up a different set of young players this week.

There's another article that said Demarai Gray was in those considered for a call up but Solanke was picked ahead of him - if it was vice versa we'd all be saying how great Southgate is and how promising England's future is. If Gray deserves to get called up I'm sure he will considering some of the names that have been called up in this break

Dominic Solanke, whose 7 appearances in the premier league don't even add up to 90 minutes and has failed score a senior goal for an English club, his longest appearance was 24 minutes in a 5-0 thrashing by Man City.

Or Gray, who has made 52 appearances in the Premier League including actually starting some games, even playing a full 90 minutes, he's scored a couple of goals, got a few assists and actually positively influenced senior games.

Tough choice Gareth. Gray  can work his way into the England squad, but he will be at a disadvantage not playing for a "Big Club", despite Liverpool not winning the league in Gray's lifetime, they are still considered a bigger club than us.

“With Dom and Lewis, we’re talking about a reward really for one captaining the Under-20 world cup winners and the other one the Golden Boot winner for the Under-20s world cup winners."
