Favourite songs, that always make you think and why?

Still the same - bob segar and the silver bullet band

simple man - lynyrd skynyrd

two classics given to me by my brother who died this year . when I emigrated a few years ago . he wanted me to know how he felt . The first was how he saw me in life after trials. The second what he wanted me to be. If I turn out half as good as him I will have lived a very fulfilling life . He was a man to walk the mountains in winter with. Was my pleasure to share his life. And he gave me a love of music.

We Got A Bigger Problem Now - Dead Kennedys (Revised version of California Uber Alles for the Reagan Administration)

Great band and beyond question, the tightest punk band I ever saw live. Although hardcore is credited to the East Coast in its inception, the DKs were doing the same all but name in the late seventies predicated upon the "Mubuhay" scene before them which they came to define. "In God We Trust, Inc." was arguably their first vinyl hardcore proper, but they had been preforming the genre for several years.

As with so much agit. politicised social satire present in second wave punk, even the British audiences didn't get it and I remember seeing them at Queens Hall where all the Oi/skinhead contingent were pulling Nazi Salutes during California Uber Alles.

So many great, visionary songs, although the integrity of Jello's lyrics and political posturing was sullied for me by the post split acrimony and his integrity compromised by the complete lack of probity surrounding Alternative Tentacles and the royalties concealed from the rest of the band. His spoken word tours are compelling though and far more cerebral than Rollins'.

****ing brilliant...

Oasis - Don't Go Away

Feeder - Turn

Travelling Wilburys - End of the Line

Counting Crows - Up All Night

Counting Crows - Mrs Potters Lullaby

Stereophonics - Too Many Sandwiches

Athlete - Black Swan Song

My favourite music (like my most fond football memories) tend to remind me of a certain point/event in my life. Just a shame they're all on the depressing side. :D

Good topic idea @Suzie the Fox

I think you’re right that it’s very much mood dependant.

Whenever I need to wake up/boost my energy/get my blood pumping, I often stick on “She sells sanctuary” by the Cult (the best intro to a song ever imo)

P.S. Nice to see Chocolate Girl by Deacon Blue on your list - a vastly underrated tune

That's the one Deacon Blue song I consider acceptable.  Got in on 7" somewhere.

It's an enduring mystery to me why some people like "Dignity". Whenever I hear it, I like to imagine it sinking with the loss of everybody on board

You can slag my choices off now, Webbo.

Morrissey - Suedehead (makes me think of winter, partly because of the video, partly because of listening to it while trudging through a blizzard on my paper round in about 1990)

British Sea Power - Carrion (driving through mountain passes in the Lake District, when I first heard it)

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Waking for Winter (despite its name reminds me of driving to Norfolk in the Autumn with all the trees showing lovely colours)

Pulp - Razzmataz (I lived in Sheffield for a bit and I always thought Pulp captured the essence of that place better than anybody else had done, although I suppose Arctic Monkeys ran them very close)

Don McLean - Castles In The Air (My first heartbreak)

The Darkness - Growing On Me (People physically attack you if you say you like The Darkness, but they emerged at a time when I was probably actually enjoying my adult life for the first time, despite being quite a few years into it)

Belle and Sebastian - Your Cover's Blown (This came out around the time I was basically on a B&S pilgrimage to Glasgow's West End, they played a free gig in the Botanical Gardens, and were just brilliant basically. They still are, but this proved I could love a band as much as The Smiths)

The Smiths - Sheila Take A Bow (It's just ridiculous, taking the piss really. I liked the just f**k it all off vibe of it even as a child)

The Fall - Theme From Sparta FC #2 (It's very noisy, aggressive, and great to dance to but it only gets played if I know the DJ)

Dignity, Deacon Blue  Speaks about the dignity of the working man.

The Day before you came, ABBA. always makes me well up

And I love her, The Beatles, because I'm a soppy old sod

Summer Breeze, The Isley Brothers, just a terrific version of a great song

Substitute, The Who, best lyrics ever written

Countless others, most 60s and 70s soul, early 80s two tone

One of my karaoke favourites.....

Didn't you buy this on 7" ?

Don't think so. We had a bootleg of Raintown though.

Maybe you're thinking of Life In A Northern Town by Dream Academy, which I did and is similar.

We played this as my wife to be entered the room where we shared our vows. Every time I hear, I always remember just how beautiful she looked. And still does.

Ok so that just brought a tear to my eye ... Beautiful song, and such lovely words.

Paul Weller - You do something to me

Guns n Roses - November Rain

The Prodigy - Charlie Says

Mumford and Sons - Tompkins Square Park

Elo - Diary of Horace Wimp

Loads more but these are the ones that first sprang to mind, all for very different reasons

Some choice songs there. November Rain is a classic and Paul Weller you do something for me is also one of my top songs.. Will check out The Elo and Mumford & Sons ones as they dont ring a bell.
