The Boat in Melton looks old school

Yeah it's great, untouched interior, steady without being innovative cask selection

Any good pubs in Burbage chaps?

My mate says they are full of absolute deano willy pullers but we are planning on a small soirée in some of the local establishments soon.

The Anchor has a great interior and the beer is better than usual for a Marston's

I see the royal oak in rothley has had a do over and doesn't look like a complete bag of shit anymore

I usually dread refurbs but god that needed one. Looks a bit naff but it’s Everards so it’s to be expected

The Anchor is fine weeknights but Friday and Saturdays the clientele changes - there was a horse and trap tied up outside last weekend so that gives you an insight, if you're into a bit of Columbian marching powder you'll feel right at home.

The Cross Keys is much better, Sycamores is Deano, and the Red Lion is more 60+. If you can be bothered to walk a bit further the Chequers has a decent beer garden.

Worry is does anyone live near or go down there other than to nip into Screwfix or alike now.

There are thousands of houses down that way off frog island. Question is does anyone living in them actually want to use a pub.

The fact there hasn't been one in that area for a long time suggests a demographic change that resulted in it not being viable.

New flats on the waterfront might offer some custom.

Nice to see news about a pub opening rather than closing but I can’t see it lasting very long.

As someone who used to live in Woodgate/Frog Island, the area simply doesn’t have the demographics to support a local pub and I can’t see it being nice enough to be worth venturing out from town for most people.

Moved back to the area now but I’ll be amazed if the Forresters last. It used to have the following going for it:-

1) All the working factories around there for finish time

2) People used to use it as a warm up before going in Town when that nightlife culture existed

3) It used to do well attracting sporting clubs who played on St Margaret’s Pastures like the hockey teams playing there or even the odd visiting cricket team at Abbey Park.

All traditions lost. They will have to work incredibly hard to get it running well

It's crazy how few pubs there are around such a big inner city area. Particularly good ones.

The area between the west of the city, say from Crows Nest/Napier and Blackbird there is barely anything, even stretching past/towards Abbey Park.

That includes the rest of Frog Island, Newfoundpool, Tudor Road etc.

Even going towards Westcotes, New Parks etc there isn't a lot.

In fact, is there even a pub in New Parks anymore? That's a pretty big estate to not have an actual pub.

We have a few good pubs, but it's just not a good city for drinking culture away from the actual centre, and even that is limited.

The Frog Island crawl included as many 6 pubs

The Sportsman is still on Park Rise opposite Western Park and you have the social club, that’s it. There’s a handful in Brauny and Brauny Frith.

You right on drinking culture. When I lived in South Brum, your flat roofers were semi regular still. ****ing frightening some of them though

Forgot about the Sportsman, surprised it's still going.

Probably helped that all the sports pitch’s at Western Park are on that side of the park. I’ve been after playing footy on a Sunday morning
