And poetry. Don’t forget our fantastic poets.

Absolutely.

I was reading parts of A Shropshire Lad by Housman yesterday, I have no idea how anyone can have a mind that can write such beauty.

Looks like we’re all in agreement re. the national anthem - it really is truly shite.

I’m a proud Englishman but I get more emotional watching Land of our fathers or the star spangled banner tbh.

If I knew how to do a poll I’d put it out there to see what the great and good of FT land think our anthem should be. For me, probably Jerusalem I’d imagine...

Sure we had one a while back and Jerusalem won.

Either that are LOHAG for me, both stirring.

Fair enough.

At sporting occasions I feel it's over too quickly compared to the others - maybe if we also sang the second verse if we're going to be stuck with it?

Must say at the six nations rugby I prefer all the others to GSTQ.

I get bored with all the athems at sporting events. If they could just cut it down to 1 verse each I'd be happy.

I can't stand SSB to be honest but I wonder if that's more the context that it's always sung in. Teary, flag-waving, badly-permed women at a superbowl kind of thing...

Yeah I know what you mean - it can be a bit cringe especially when some talent show winner sings it really slow and makes a big drama at the end bit. Although I do admire the yanks for singing it in schools/colleges etc. and showing some kind of patriotism towards their anthem. If anything we're maybe too far the other way and too reserved - almost embarrassed about it? (and that might be because most people think it's crap!)

Nah can't agree with that. I'd hate us to be so obsessed over our flag and anthem. We're too cool for all that shit.

I think it's the fact we're just more reserved as a nation. St Georges day sums it up really - complete waste of time and no-one gives a shit. At least the yanks go big on the 4th of July celebration but we're almost embarrassed to celebrate our national day. There's a happy medium somewhere I think...

God Bless America is quite charming, much prefer that to SSB.

Food. Eat anything you want, pretty much anywhere you want and it's usually decent value. And with JustEat you're never more than 20 minutes away from a lovely shithouse pizza, which is always buy one get one free.

Plumbing. You can drink the tapwater and take a massive shit without knocking out a toilet, unlike some other countries.

Football. I It's the only proper sport, and every other league in the world is bullshit.

Lack of gun crime.

Sunday Roast.

Christmas.

Cheese. We do some amazing cheeses.

Sausages. No other country understands what a sausage should be. Cvnts.

Lack of dangerous wildlife. The idea of bears existing near me would have me shit my pants non stop everyday.

That fortnight we get in April every year where the weather is nice.

Taking the piss. I like being able to take the piss, but not to Australian levels. They're just mean. Cvnts.

Motorway services. I don't know why but I like ours better than other countries.

Proper pubs.

I actually like that our country is generally shit so I really look forward to my next holiday abroad.

Stable internet.

Dislike:

Weather. Hate the damn weather so much I sometimes consider moving abroad. It is miserable for probably 250+ days a year, why the fvck did my ancestors settle here?

Traffic, combined with the low standard of driving amongst many and general impatience. Plus roadworks, "smart" motorways, speedbumps, cycle lanes and all the other stuff installed purely to cause inconvenience road users.

Countryside. What is the point in wet hills.

Bland landscape. No mountains, no desert, no rapids, no rainforest, no canyons, no massive lakes, no volcanos, nothing. I can't remember the last time a view in the this country made me say "wow".

Single track roads. It's 2018, why are there still potholed roads that are about 9ft wide. Unacceptable.

Cyclists. Fvck off.

Beaches. I'm not much of a beach person but our beaches are nearly all shit.

Northern pride. Urgh fvck off.

London. Bullshit.

Kidderminster/Rotherham/Hull/Derby/all the poverty towns/cities we have. Some are actually not far off third world standards these days.

Cost of property.

Phone signal. This island is tiny, and there are areas devoid of phone signal in TWENTYFVCKINGEIGHTEEN. Sort it out. Cvnts.

Land of Hope and Glory should be the national anthem, less churchy-noncey than Jerusalem and has better instrumentals. Italy, France, Russia and I hate to say it, Wales, have top notch anthems.

Likes (inspired by watching Darkest Hour yesterday)

Being determined to never surrender despite the cost, what my country alone did in 1940 when the lights of Europe had gone out makes me immensely proud to be British and an inheritor of the civilisation they defended from barbarians.

England.

Likes:

Diversity

Safety

Easy to travel around- Small

Dislikes:

Lack of diversity weather wise. I envy places like Canada where you can go skiing in the winter and have decent summers.

Some people abusing the state.

Traffic. Its incredible to visit parts of Scandinavia where you wont see a car for hours on end yet it takes me 40 minutes to drive 3 miles nearly every single day.

Lack of fresh, healthy foods in supermarkets. Go into one in Italy and you can, rather bizarrely, buy an individual lettuce leaf if you wanted to put together your own healthy meal.

Lack of interesting wildlife.

Connectivity. How on earth can I wake up in the arse end of nowhere in Ukraine and have a full 4g signal yet my wifi at home is shambolic?

The Sun. That can f**k right off.

The NHS? The lack of natural disasters or dangerous wildlife? The rolling scenery? The temperate climate? Our variety of humour? Katie off of Cbeebies?

Come on Buce, cheer up a bit.
