A pint of Murphys stout at Loughborough carillon cricket club.

Nice lineup

Finally went into a brewery / bar in South Fremantle called Running with Thieves which we keep driving past.  Nice burger and pint of their session pale ale.  Bit weak but I was driving so the West Coast IPA 6.4% my wife enjoyed would have been more interesting. Nice spot though, sat outside in some winter sunshine, 23 degrees.  Gotta love WA.

I can’t believe this. Went to the bulls head in Ashby after work, ordered a pint of gamma ray. £7.85!!! I’ve never heard a bar maid say the price of a pint so quietly.

Yeah but that’s not a premium ipa. It is massed produced macro shit. Pay less for decent stuff from deya or verdant. It’s my fault though, live and learn.

Premium as in alcohol content, rather than session.  It didn't used to mass produced until Heineken brought it.

Agreed bud, I was out in Nottingham, near the Castle, the bars had session ipa's £7.  Gamma Ray in town is atleast £7.50.  I just think drinking out in general has become super expensive.

Hence i stick to the smaller independant places, rather then the popular places.in town.

Fully agree I usually only go to brew in Ashby which is an independent place.

A German dark beer in Austria  served in the most beautiful clay mug. It went down a treat with the goulash soup.

I did take a picture, but I can't seem to upload anything nowadays due to the max size limit.

It depends a lot on the type of place I think.

Charnwood Brewery’s micropubs are good value because they cut out the middleman and sell their own beer. I believe Brewery taprooms get a beer duty reduction, as the beer hasn’t technically been “released for consumption” off-site. Freehouses usually have more control over their costs, especially if the building’s paid off, so they can keep prices down.

Pubcos on the other hand, are just run as property portfolios and constantly increase rent which impacts beer prices. The Navigation in Barrow (owned by Admiral Taverns) is noticeably pricier than the Swan in Mountsorrel (a freehouse), despite being similar pubs. Corporate chain groups, as well, are just interested in ever increasing returns and margins, which leads to rip off beer too.

Then you’ve got passion projects like Pinsent in Mountsorrel—£6 for any IPA, regardless of brand or strength (from my experience). You’d be paying £8+ for the same beer elsewhere.

Charnwood is OKAY for pricing.

£4.80 for cask that you brew yourself is verging on pricey for me, however, I do pay it because the quality is a cut above most beers.

Everyone needs to make a margin at the end of the day and when the product is good you're happy to pay it and contribute to their success. When the product is average/poor and you're contributing towards a racket (Pubcos and corporate chains) that's when it becomes annoying.

Off Glasgow for a stag soon. Happy to hear shouts of pubs. Got a list already but word of mouth recommends always the best.

Glasgow is surprisingly fantastic, a city where I could see it's possible to live. Big business, high skilled jobs, cultural scene, easy to navigate city centre, lots of diverse young people.

For pubs, I went to:

All 5 wetherspoons in city centre

The pot still

The horse shoe

Shilling Brewing

Kelvingrove art gallery

Food scene not that great, ate at the ivy and china town. There will be better options

Scotia and Clutha are very close together and don't look great from the outside but great boozers on the inside.

Smokin fox, Admiral Woods and Rhoderick dhu just outside Central station, as is The Horseshoe.

Plenty down merchant City, even the O'Neils is decent.

You can't go wrong in the city centre, even the Greene King one close to George Sq is ok for a laugh, Drouthy's.

Enjoy.
