Going to Norwich tomorrow. Looks a good city for pubs.

Really underrated place generally but the pubs are great. European Bar Guide is really high on it - although I don’t think The Belgian Monk is on there and that’s fantastic.

Going on a stag in Nottingham soon. Will bars/pubs be funny about a group of blokes in their mid 30s to 50s coming in or will we have to book some places? Also if anyone can recommend some decent gaffs in Nottingham for us to attend that would be greatly appreciated

How big a group is it?

10 or 11 fairly well behaved, past it gentlemen

Think you'll be alright to be honest. Split in two if really bothered.

If you want to book somewhere guaranteed to be fine with it/has a few games/shit loads of sports screens. They recently opened a 'Box' sports bar which is great for stags.

Craft stuff at Junkyard and Kilpin (next to each other)

Cross Keys has had a glow up since we smashed it up lol

Down by the river there's Canalhouse and recently refurbed Fellows as good starting points if you're getting the train in, perfect for a sunny day too.

If you're planning on lining the stomach at any point, book a table at Slice n Brew, incredible Pizza and good beer too (pricey beer though)

There's tonnes more, could go on forever, but you'll stumble across plenty of good boozers on your way around.

Bodega is good for groups, especially a bit earlier too. Outdoor area is substantial.

+1 for Kilpin too. Between that and Canalhouse Nottingham has two pubs with the best beer selections I've ever seen in Britain (annoyingly).

Definitely try BOX in Nottingham. Really good sport bar with loads of screens and a decent beer line up

It's so good, lost track of the amount I watched in there last season. It's everything a sports bar should be and just happens to be in a ridiculously cool building.

Yea it was outstanding. Has to be said everywhere I go at the moment but I am jealous of most cities pub scenes in comparison to our own.

It was said they had a pub for every day of the year and a church for every Sunday. Not quite as many these days but still plenty of great pubs and interesting medieval churches left.

As someone who is into architectural history for their career, there’s nothing like the flint work round here. Beautiful churches and there was some great Tudor buildings too.

Me too - saw some photos of a couple of Sunderland pubs the other day and they looked as if they’d be the 2 best in the city

Christ, Sunderland! No surprises though, as I watch that Forest fan doing the beer crawls occasionally and every place he goes to I think the same.

Being the best man organising the stag do in Glasgow - when organising everything it felt like something was on and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Hotels more pricey and expensive than normal. Both Glasgow clubs playing friendlies on Friday and Sunday rather at least one of them on the Saturday. It was only when I noticed the roads closed on Saturday morning and it all came together - the Rangers shirts & the Belfast accents. Orange Marches. So it made for an interesting start on Saturday.

Anyway here's your run down

Friday

Shilling Brewing Co - solid craft beer, cracking setting, good pizzas

Pot Still - favourite and winner, deep Whisky selection, cracking atmosphere, pies during the day

The Press Bar - fairly standard spot in Merchant City but a good crowd in there, average beer

Tap Yard - crap

Brewdog Merchant City - squeezed in a final orders

Saturday - a type of sub-crawl

Scotia Bar - claims to be Glasgow's oldest, outside looks terrible, inside proper pub, full of Orange order

The Laurieston - recent winner of Timeout's best pub/bar in the UK which made a few of the stag group look at me mad, when you turn up outside to this 60s masterpiece of dull architecture. I loved it - it is 1960s, it does feel a bit novelty but equally this is a dying example of a pub

The Keningston Bar - now this was Glasgow. Small bar, swift half, like an estate pub

Three Judges - highly rated, good selection of bar but felt like off with the place, largely because at this point was overwhelmed by subcrawlers

Inn Deep - the pick of craft beer places, 30 taps, interesting setting, you can set outside overlooking the river until 10pm, great pizza place next door.

Back to Pot Still

Top 3 were The Laurieston (McEwans Export for the win), Pot Still and Inn Deep

In Derby unexpectedly on Saturday - The Alexandra hotel would easily be the best pub in Leicester. Didn't have time to go in any others bar the Dolphin but the whole place looked smarter and buzzier than what Leicester would have unfortunately.

You'd probably have a dozen pubs there in that bracket (Alex probably my favourite of those too). Derby goes under the radar as a drinking city but ITK Camra types flock there.

On a beach in Devon last night, washing down a range of seafood, with a bunch of 'pirates' holding their monthly parley nearby.

Aaargh!

The two cans of Steady Rolling Man yesterday were superb at Lords

Anyway, went to the Pocket yesterday in Islington. This is the sister pub to Southampton Arms (Gospel Oak). It’s literally the same pub but no pork cobs.

Tamil Crown as well afterwards - superb grub

I had a great walk back from Lords on Friday through Regents Park, stopping off at the Euston Tap for a Kernal Pale Ale Citra

One of my favourite gaffs in Leeds has closed too - The Highland. Probably the best Guinness the city had, was £4.20, had sky sports but didn’t attract sports bar bellends, old boozer that’s survived student accommodation being thrown up all around it but closed last weekend. Would be amazed if it reopens as a pub unfortunately.

Recently reopened as The Highland Laddie from the people who own the excellent Empire Cafe in Leeds. Heard nothing but good things since it reopened, lovely stuff.

Agree with Cosbeh's shout re: The Pocket, lovely gaff. Duke of St Albans up Highgate / Kentish Town is fantastic too. Recently did the Palm Tree in Mile End for the first time and what a gaff that is by the way.

Trying a few newuns for me at the end of the month, eyeing up The Sultan and the Trafalgar down Wimbledon / Colliers Wood way.

Always got a good selection in there! Quite often some rather interesting characters in or hanging out outside of there though lol
