Yes they did it on occasion, but neither opened regularly, in fact Dhoni batted at 7 for most of his test career. Admittedly, Sangakkara batted at 3, but that is still not as difficult as opening, whilst let's not forget he was a better player than Bairstow. Also worth noting his average was 67 without the gloves, compared to 40 with them.

Either drop Jennings, tell him he’ll be back in the winter if you want, or pick someone to come in at 3 in this test with a view to opening in Sri Lanka. It’s a dead rubber and we need at least one new opener for the winter. There is a heartless side of me that even thinks we should have dropped Cook for this test prepare for the future. This. Burns should have been brought in for Jennings (especially on his home ground), with Jennings given the reassurance that he would be back for the tour of Sri Lanka. Shocked they didn't do that. Don't agree that Cook should have been dropped however. If anyone's earnt the right to go out on their own terms, it's him.

Voll Blau Posted 5 September 2018 Author Posted 5 September 2018 Leach's current match figures going into the third innings and second morning (lol) of Somerset's game are 7 for 28. Burns scored 90 yesterday. Not sure what more these guys can do?

(Can you imagine that wicket btw - opening the bowling with him and Bess) Ali at number three tomorrow, great way to immediately shoot down his confidence. Root must be seriously desperate to play at four.
Voll Blau Posted 5 September 2018 Author Posted 5 September 2018 Mad end to Somerset v Lancashire. First Championship tie for 15 years.

Voll Blau Posted 6 September 2018 Author Posted 6 September 2018 England unchanged tomorrow, though I've seen a rumour Bairstow's getting the gloves back?
AKCJ Posted 6 September 2018 Posted 6 September 2018 I think Leach and Burns will get a chance in Sri Lanka.

Crinklyfox Posted 7 September 2018 Posted 7 September 2018 Last test for Alastair Cook. Here's hoping he has a successful one and goes out on a high.
Voll Blau Posted 7 September 2018 Author Posted 7 September 2018 Burns must be sat with a glass of red pissing himself at that Jennings dismissal - as long as it's not dawned on him yet he'll have to open with him come the winter.

Again, rightfully got his place back and has earned his place in the team. MOM last test, and we all know what a confidence player Ali is.So what do we do,put him 3.Baffled.
Guest MattP Posted 7 September 2018 Posted 7 September 2018 Moeen has played and missed 24 times Shami is so unlucky.

Seem to remember years ago the same thing happened.Playing and missing. Put him down the order, where he belongs and let him play his natural game.He is caught here, doesn’t know what to do. Ali down the order,in full flow is an absolute pleasure to watch. This is verging on embarrassing and tbh I’m not sure it’s his fault. Not good enough and not playing his game. surely the pros know that if a couple of old boys who played a bit of 45 over cricket years ago can!!!!
Crinklyfox Posted 7 September 2018 Posted 7 September 2018 Cook finally gone but he did the job that we've needed doing as an opener all summer.
Osavo Posted 7 September 2018 Posted 7 September 2018 Why on earth did Root review that? Absolutely plumb.
