Yes they did it on occasion, but neither opened regularly, in fact Dhoni batted at 7 for most of his test career. Admittedly, Sangakkara batted at 3, but that is still not as difficult as opening, whilst let's not forget he was a better player than Bairstow. Also worth noting his average was 67 without the gloves, compared to 40 with them.

This. Burns should have been brought in for Jennings (especially on his home ground), with Jennings given the reassurance that he would be back for the tour of Sri Lanka. Shocked they didn't do that. 

 

Don't agree that Cook should have been dropped however. If anyone's earnt the right to go out on their own terms, it's him.

The dumping of Leach looks even weirder given how many overs Rashid has bowled this summer. (Can you imagine that wicket btw - opening the bowling with him and Bess)

 

Ali at number three tomorrow, great way to immediately shoot down his confidence. Root must be seriously desperate to play at four.

Bloke has had a mare abroad and rightfully dropped.

Again,rightfully got his place back and has earned his place in the team.

Seem to remember years ago the same thing happened.Playing and missing.

Put him down the order,where he belongs and let him play his natural game.He is caught here,doesn’t know what to do.

Ali down the order,in full flow is an absolute pleasure to watch.This is verging on embarrassing and tbh I’m not sure it’s his fault.Not good enough and not playing his game.
