It would be nice to think England could produce a left-sided centreback which would allow Harry Maguire to move over. Also a natural playmaker who can play holding midfield as well. The brutal truth is that there is no current obvious challenger in the Under-21s to Kyle Walker and Jordan Henderson. Ryan Sessegnon looks the best left-sided prospect around.

England need another central midfielder. Here, Harry Winks is a good prospect. Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a speculative pick at left wing-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Ryan Sessegnon and Rhian Brewster may enter calculations. Ruben Loftus-Cheek will need to improve on his cameos in Russia, as will Marcus Rashford if he is to displace Raheem Sterling. I prefer Kyle Walker at right wing-back but Kieran Tripper has done well and there is no obvious third centre-back.

Gareth Southgate already knows the players he wants to bring into his squad for the Euro 2020 campaign and top of the list are Ryan Sessegnon and Joe Gomez.

Liverpool defender Gomez would have been playing in Russia had it not been for his injury and he is perfectly suited to a role on the right of the back three.

Fulham believe Sessegnon will become a forward, but his best hope of quickly getting a full call-up might be as a left wing-back. Ashley Young is 33 and Danny Rose is 28, so Southgate will be looking at that area.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek showed glimpses of what he can do doing the World Cup and hopefully he will have two years of regular club football under his belt by the time the Euros come around.

England may need to find a Luka Modric type for the midfield if they are to stand a chance of winning the Euros, but it is hard to identify anybody who will be ready to take over from Jordan Henderson in such a short space of time.

England have a young squad and the bulk of it will be retained for 2020 but, if some of the young players are given their head, then there could be an overhaul of the team. Gareth Southgate has already name-checked several young players and they could all make it if given the game-time with their clubs. There are others such as Chelsea’s Mason Mount while Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be a strong contender.

What would you like to see / prediction?

From a selfish point of view, I'd love to see Chilwell and Gray kick on in the next two years and fight for a space in the squad. Also be grand if Drinkwater could get himself back into contention, if he's interested that is.

Think we're going to see a real benefit from the way this World Cup squad's been perceived by the public. Young English talents are going to want to aspire to be part of that again now, rather than international duty being seen as a chore their clubs would rather they weren't involved in and a sideshow to making millions and living the Prem lifestyle.

If Claude can help Chilwell and Gray develop this season then they'll both be there. Young and Rose did OK in this tournament but they'll be 35 and 30 respectively by 2020. There's an opening for Chilwell that he needs to target. Gray really needs to up his game and this is his last real chance this season.

Hopefully Maddison hits the ground running too - he seems like a confident lad.

Pickford

Stones Lascelles/Tarkowski Maguire

       Trippier                  Winks         Sessengnon/Rose

  Loftus-Cheek    Alli ()

Sterling Kane

Can't see too much changing, Southgate doesn't seem keen on Rose really and Sessengnon isn't really a full back anymore but suits that position well. Personally, I don't think Foden will feature enough to force his way into the squad but Sancho just might. From what I've seen Maddison has every chance of making his way in and I think Chilwell will get capped but won't establish himself in the squad.

Interesting to see position the likes of Maitland-Niles and Ryan Sessegnon end up playing. Both seem wasted at left back/wing back but are much better options than Young. Hopefully Loftus-Cheek can develop more over the next couple of years. 2020 might be too soon for the likes of Foden and that Sancho at Dortmund. Pickford, Stones, Rashford, Ali etc should all improve as well.

I see Southgate being very loyal to this current team. Young will probably be jettisoned, and he will probably find a place for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but not much else will change unless some of the U20 World Cup winners force their way in (which I think is unlikely through lack of Premier League playing time).

Think you're underestimating Maguire's goalkeeping ability there. That head must block out most of the goal for a start.

Pickford

Stones - Lascelles - Maguire

Trippier - The Ox - Henderson - Sessegnon

Lingard - Sterling

Kane

Really don't see much changing. Pickford seems a shoo-in already, only keeper I see challenging him is Butland. Defence will pretty much stay the same, take Walker out though cause he's shit, I can only see Lascelles getting better, Gomez, Mawson and Tarkowski will probably be in contention too. RWB will probably come down to Trippier and Alexander-Arnold. Everyone expects Sessegnon to emerge as first choice LWB, Young, Rose, Bertrand and Cresswell all getting on while Luke Shaw is a fat fvck. Midfield I expect Henderson to still be the main guy, alongside him I can see it being The Ox, I'm sure he would've started at this World Cup if he hadn't got injured, Winks, Loftus-Cheek and Chalobah may come into contention too. Forward areas pretty much pick themselves unless someone like Maddison, Sancho or Foden have a rapid rise.

England's five potential breakthrough stars
Who next for England after Russia adventure?
By Nick Wright

Gareth Southgate revealed he is already planning for the 2020 European Championships after England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia.

A play-off defeat to Belgium was the final chapter at Russia 2018 but which young players are most likely to force their way into England's senior squad come the next major tournament? Here, we pick out five young stars who will be hoping to catch Southgate's eye in the season ahead.

Ryan Sessegnon
Sessegnon is perhaps the most exciting member of England's next generation. The left-back-turned-forward only celebrated his 18th birthday in May, but he has already amassed more than 80 senior appearances for Fulham. Last season, he scored 16 goals as they won promotion.

His thrilling potential has been obvious in England's youth ranks as well as at club level. Sessegnon top scored for England's U19s in last year's triumphant European Championship campaign with three goals, and he made the step up to the U21s in March, with coach Aidy Boothroyd describing him as an "exceptional talent".

Southgate feels the same way. He is believed to have given genuine consideration to including Sessegnon his World Cup squad. If the teenager picks up where he left off with Fulham in the Premier League, it would be no surprise to see him brought straight into the senior set-up for their European Championship qualifying campaign.

Phil Foden
Could Foden be the player to solve England's creativity issue? The Manchester City technician is highly regarded by Pep Guardiola, who called him up to first-team training when he was still only 16 years old.

Since then, he has made 10 senior appearances for his boyhood club. In March, the 18-year-old became the youngest Englishman ever to play in the knockout stages of the Champions League when he started in City's last-16 meeting with Swiss side Basel at the Etihad Stadium.

It is with England's youth teams, however, that his talent has been most apparent. Foden won the Golden Ball as England won the U17 World Cup in India last year, scoring twice in the final against Spain. He faces a fight to win a place in City's star-studded starting line-up, but his outstanding technical qualities are certain to appeal to Southgate.

Jadon Sancho
Sancho became a flag-bearer for young English players abroad when he turned down a new contract at Manchester City to join Borussia Dortmund last summer. He was hampered by injury in his first season in the Bundesliga, but still managed a goal and four assists in 12 appearances, impressing with his extraordinary pace and skill.

He will expect to feature more prominently next season, and there might be opportunities at international level too. Sancho was the player of the tournament in European U17 Championship in 2017, and he was also a member of their World Cup-winning squad alongside his former Manchester City team-mate Foden.

Mason Mount
Mount is another young player who has benefited from a move abroad. The Chelsea academy product is a goalscoring midfielder who spent last season on loan at Dutch side Vitesse, where he netted 14 goals and provided nine assists in 32 appearances to win their player of the year award.

Mount, a 2017 European U19 Championship winner along with Sessegnon, has already trained with England's senior squad and is expected to continue his development on loan in the upcoming season, with Frank Lampard's Derby County reportedly at the front of the queue for his signature.

Ademola Lookman
Lookman found playing opportunities hard to come by after his move from Charlton to Everton in 2016, but he made the most of his chances on loan at RB Leipzig in the second half of last season. In 11 Bundesliga appearances, the 20-year-old forward scored five goals and provided three assists

Leipzig are now eager to sign him permanently, but Everton have already rejected a £12m offer, with new manager Marco Silva eager to keep him at Goodison Park for the upcoming campaign.

Southgate is sure to keep a close eye on his development. Lookman is already well-known in the England set-up, having scored three goals in the U20s' triumphant World Cup campaign last year, and he is now an important member of Boothroyd's U21 squad.
