It probably is a deterrent to the burglar but whenever one goes off I’m just sat there moaning about the noise it’s making. Had one across the road going off for 18 hours (7am till midnight) just before xmas... a rental property and no-one home, contacted the police who (understandably) did nothing, couldnt find the property managers so nothing done until idiots got home. Started again two days later, I had then spoken to the renters and got the property managers contact... called them, nothing done for a couple of hours, fvcking thing still going... i tcontacted them again and advised i would be repairing it with a hammer if they didnt fix it... eventually they sent someone out to fix it. happened again 3 days later... same story FFS safe to say... i pay attention to house alarms, but to be honest, ill help the crooks carry the stuff out if they make sure the alarm is turned off.
The Fox Covert Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 A very long time ago, I lived in a rented flat in North London. I accidentally locked myself out once and got in by climbing up the soil pipe and squeezing through the toilet window. About half an hour later, I heard heavy footsteps outside. I opened the door to find two PCs walking up the alleyway and checking the windows. They asked me who I was and challenged me to prove I was the legit occupier. They then said they had received a phone call from a neighbour saying they had seen a burglar. Such is the anonymity of life in the smoke that I never saw any of the neighbours talk to each other and I don't think they would even recognise the face of someone they probably saw every day. Where I live now you would just knock on a neighbour's door and ask to borrow a ladder. I don't have an alarm but I do have quite elaborate passive security. When I am away, lights come on and go off at random intervals, a tv simulator near to a window activates in the evening and a neighbour parks his car in my parking place. Another neighbour empties my mail box. There are all sorts of other things you can get which I have not tried, including a motion sensor which makes the sound of a barking dog if anyone lingers by a ground floor window!

The Fox Covert Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Still haven't stopped laughing at how this thread has turned! No good looking for a grotty little flat in North London, I left it in 1986. My gaff is somewhere in the picture below. Google Earth view slightly edited to remove the absolute giveaway pieces of information. I figure that anyone intelligent enough to figure out which one it is, is unlikely to be burgling peoples houses for a living. Anyone ever listen to Clueless on Radio Leicester? I didn't get a ticket for the match tomorrow, so no surprises where I will be. Beer in the fridge?

The Fox Covert Posted 6 January 2019 Posted 6 January 2019 Course I seen the numbers in the bottom right hand corner. I have deleted the last two numbers from each co-ordinate. What there is left will get you the town but not the precise location. And it isn't the big house in the corner, which is actually a block of six flats. Facebook's official policy is that you can only have one account. But if you have one you can't access because you no longer have the mobile phone number and email address you can't transfer the content to your live account and then close it down. Sh1t really! If anyone is still sleuthing there is actually enough information in the picture to identify my house and you all missed it. Hence my mention of Clueless!

Mate, luckily for you I'm not a burglar, but it took me about ten seconds to identify where you live.

Countryfox Posted 7 January 2019 Posted 7 January 2019 Been done once .. and never again ... I heard a noise in the night and came downstairs ... they legged it. There was was a good programme on the box ages ago called Beat the Burglar ... it was very interesting and showed how easy it was to get into a house and also what deterred him. Using that and a bit of common sense I’ve beefed things up. All the usual stuff .. the dogs of course ... and a few extras. When out it always looks like someone is at home and when on holiday a relative house sits. Oh .. and I’m armed to the fookin teeth and have a plan how to dispose of the bodies ..

Yeah, that’s all very well till the relative takes the dogs for a walk. I like the way you’ve got your lounge, by the way...
