Quite, can your hand be off-side?

No i don't think so, as far as i was aware it had to be a body-part that was acceptable to score, which triggers you being offside.

True, but in the interests of removing doubt about what is/isn't offside and how accurate VAR is, I'd personally prefer a clear-cut system that takes a set point (either the middle of the chest, or a pair of sensors front/back averaged). It'd probably favour the attacking player slightly more than the current implementation of the rules, but as long as its consistent (which it would be) thats not necessarily a bad thing.

If we could reduce it to that, then we could be onto something.

Taking the concept of your idea and running with a little, players often wear trackers under their shirts anyway for the clubs' analysts to review data, so surely it would be fairly simple to include a GPS-style device(s) which tracks each player's position on the pitch in real-time, with a computer somewhere keeping a live list of who's offside at any given moment - similar to your 'robo-lino'.

If there's an offside call, just establish when the pass was made (and which players are affecting play) and consult the list to see if they're offside.

No more arguments about playing someone on/offside by a stray ankle or whatnot as each player is reduced to a single coordinate on the pitch.

I get the ideas and appreciate the inventiveness of both of the above.

But both are prime examples of the game losing its soul. It's a sport, that's all. If oil states, oligarchs and state sanctioned monopolies wish to dabble in a sport where tens of millions of quid can be lost (or won) down to chance, error or even bias....then so be it.

Referees are part of the game. The bad ones too. It's rather human and charming that up until now, the referee's word is final. Play to the whistle! Most sports - at their core - are the human nice side; manners, luck, frustration, respect humility, acceptance, joy, taking things on the chin.

It’s not sport anymore it’s business. That’s why we now have VAR.

Going back a few pages i was allways under the impression that offside was when the ball was first played ie a throughball and the striker is onside before he touches the ball is still a goal. This is where VAR falls down for me....or have i got it all wrong?Arsenal 20 years ago used to be masters at(stepping up when a ball was played from midfield).

That's kinda my point.

It's a sport where business are changing the design of the game to suit themselves.

Football's about losing every much as it is about winning. Business despises that. I love it for that.

Another big issue with VAR for me is who chooses what angle the ref is allowed to look at? Quite often you can find one angle that could give you an excuse to change a decision.

Similarly, who is going to be the one who chooses what decisions and what angles of those decisions are shown to fans on the big screens? Whoever it was could easily try and whip up the fans by showing things at different angles. That’s a heck of a lot of power for someone who’s not involved in the game.

No, the hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered in this rule.

You're right, it's at the moment the ball was last played and that hasn't changed. Arsenal are still good at playing offside but ...

Kane is clearly offside here and he went on to 'fall over' to get a penalty. Next season VAR will prevent this, albeit after a long hold up and a pitch invasion.

A very good point. This will be most interesting in Women's football.

This will favour strikers  not as "well Built" as the others!

Just realised I am completely wrong with the above:

FA rule says,

So although Kane was in an offside position, he was 'fouled' before he approached the ball so the ref was correct not to apply the offside. If only we could go back to the old days :(
