Good Deeds & News (Corona)

A Turkish Air Force A400M transport aircraft will land at Brize Norton later today carrying a cargo of masks and protective equipment for the UK.

This is the first aid flight to use a Nato call sign - a procedure which expedites air traffic control clearances. What’s known as the RAM, or Rapid Air Mobility initiative, enables the rapid movement of military transport through national airspace by using this code.

The original idea was to help speed things up in the event of a military crisis - but obviously this time the goal is to speed up Covid-19 response and cut bureaucracy. The cargo comprises some 100,000 masks, 50,000 N95 masks, and 100,000 medical PPE suits.

How leather goods business converted factory into PPE production line for NHS staff in one day

A manufacturing company has transformed part of its factory into a face visor making production line, to help in the fight against coronavirus.

Mowbray Leather Goods Limited usually manufacture products such as bags and belts.

But after Boris Johnson's lockdown announcement, CEO of the company, Minh Phan, revealed that it had started to make visors to aid frontline NHS staff and combat the shortage of PPE.

Mr Phan said that he and his colleagues converted the factory, which is based in Melton, into a production line in just one day.

Speaking to LeicestershireLive he said: "As a leather goods manufacturer we have many machines and tools that can also be used on thin clear sheets of plastic.

"I saw a news report the previous weekend about a design company in New York making face shields for healthcare professionals and thought we could do that with our equipment.

"I went in on Sunday (March 29) to develop a prototype and made cutting patterns, our production team assessed the design on Monday, we made a few adjustments and took the patterns down to our toolmakers, ordered the plastic sheets and went into production on Wednesday.

"We have a mezzanine floor in our factory which had been kept empty and open with plans for leather workshops.

"This space was transformed within one day to a face shields production line."

Five of his staff are currently working full-time on the production line to develop the visors made of polyethene terephthalate (PET).

The company has sourced materials from other Leicestershire businesses. The plastic is sourced from PSR Plastics which is also based in Melton.

It is also using elastic from H Seal & Co in Coalville to make the head loop.

The visor has been designed so that it can be moved upwards allowing its user to eat and drink without removing the visor entirely.

Mr Pahn said that in their first day of production they made 100 face shields but only a week later were making 400 in a day.

He also said that there is the capacity to bring back the four staff who have been furloughed to double their production figure if the demand becomes great enough.

Currently, Mr Pahn said they are selling the visors at a price "as low as possible" at around £3 per visor.

He said that the company is not making a profit from this project and stated that he expects to make a loss after the battle against coronavirus has concluded.

"The shields have been distributed all around town, helped by donations from other business owners on our trading estate," he said.

"We have had excellent feedback from all those that have used them, and it's motivating us to make more.

"We have ordered more materials and hope to keep making these for as long as they are required by workers that need them.

"We have priced these as low as possible with the view to only recover our costs.

"Now that Melton has largely been served we want to reach out and offer them to a wider community."

The company has pledged to keep producing the PPE for as long as is necessary and has reached out to the NHS to offer its services.

A 99-year-old army veteran who has joined the fundraising fight against Covid-19 has "smashed" his £500,000 target.

Tom Moore aims to complete 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden by Thursday, walking with the aid of a frame.

He originally hoped to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together, to thank "magnificent" staff after recent treatment for a broken hip and cancer.

He said: "I thank the British public from the bottom of my heart."

"Who would have thought that when I set a target of £1,000 a week ago, it could have reached £500,000?" he added.

Jeez, Captain Moore has achieved more in one hundred laps than I’ll ever achieve in my life, and that’s on top of his service during WW2. What a top man, just think how many life’s he’ll save. Of cause well done to everyone who’s donated as well, again saving more life’s, thank you.

It rather pisses on Jay Flynn's virtual pub quiz firework...
