The police might be very strict here in Mallorca about keeping us in, but they are doing their best also to break our boredom 😁

Latest University of Oxford research is estimating actual fatality rate of COVID-19 at between 0.19% and 0.24% factoring in ALL infections not the ones hospitalised (and therefore known). Their findings are that there are very large numbers of infected people not counting in official infection stats.

Which they've presumably guessed at the numbers of?

Works a bit like XG…

But what would they know?!

My point is that at the moment nobody knows enough about this particular virus to provide precise measurements like that. The mortality rate is different everywhere. There isn't 100 years of backwards analysis that can be done. I'd treat any numbers with extreme caution. They haven't even some mass testing of antibodies yet to understand how many have it without severe illness.

Not good news as such but I guess it's an unrelated good deed.

Help needed to rescue UK's old rainfall records

By Jonathan AmosScience correspondent

At a loss to know what to do with your self-isolation time?

Well, why not get on the computer and help with a giant weather digitisation effort?

The UK has rainfall records dating back 200 years or so, but the vast majority of these are in handwritten form and can't easily be used to analyse past periods of flooding and drought.

The Rainfall Rescue Project is seeking volunteers to transfer all the data into online spreadsheets.

You're not required to rummage through old bound volumes; the Met Office has already scanned the necessary documents - all 65,000 sheets.

You simply have to visit a website, read the scribbled rainfall amounts and enter the numbers into a series of boxes.

"If you do just a couple of minutes every now and then - that's great," said Prof Ed Hawkins. "If you want to spend an hour doing 30 or 40 columns - then that'll be amazing. But any amount of time, it will all add up and be a tremendous help."

You can’t get anything precise, but, there is enough data to make some reasonable assumptions…. We’ll find out soon enough what the reality is…. I do a lot of data modelling in my day job and as long as your solid data and assumptions are reasonable, you can make some remarkably accurate estimates…

Their assumptions appear to be way out though.

Do they?

Further research from University of Oxford (remember who indicated an actual fatality rate of around 0.2% based on far more people having been infected than records indicate).

They have conducted more research based on Icelandic data (where testing per capita is much more widespread) and have a case fatality rate of between 0.05% and 0.14%

They’re pretty smart these people making the calculations….

Good news I hope…. But, time will tell…
