I believe that's the 'Manny' on the left side of the picture. Manchester Working Mens Club.

Tried to join there back in the 70s but they had a Father and son policy then. In other words; if your dad wasn't already a member, then you couldn't join.

There was a fire near the corner at one time but as for your question you could ask the same about the whole length of that side of Haymarket as well as the Haymarket block it's like Leicester suffered some really heavy bombing in the war but it didn't certainly not there.

I remember walking round the corner of Humberstone gate at the crack of dawn when a teenager in the late 90s on my way to work, to find that beautiful timber building completely destroyed by fire and still smouldering.

I think someone had left an oven on overnight in a restaurant or something.

I remember them having pretty graphic sex shows in the early 80's. Or at least so I was told.

So they dismantled the Church in the bottom picture and rebuilt it down New Walk and then built the hotel in the top picture.

In the Budget yesterday Levelling Up Funds were approved for the transformation of Leicester Railway Station, which will see the station flipped with a new entrance on Station Street (as it was back when it opened in 1840). The move will create a new open public space and new retail and cafe spaces in the station, BUT from the most recent plans looks like it'll see the closure/potential relocation of The Parcel Yard.

New Walk c1917.......New Walk is a rare example of a Georgian pedestrian promenade. Laid out by the Corporation of Leicester in 1785, the walkway was intended to connect Welford Place with the racecourse (now Victoria Park) and is said to follow the line of a Roman trackway, the Via Devana. Originally named “Queen’s Walk”, after Queen Charlotte, consort of George III, it was eventually the popular name of the “New Walk” that survived. Almost a mile long, New Walk has been a Conservation Area since 1969, ensuring its unique character is protected....(Story of leicester).

Shame about the Parcel Yard as I'm a fan (though I've no doubt another reasonable pub next-to-the-station will open with this development), and there's no doubt the station itself needs some attention at booking hall / platform level - but is anybody going to want to sit in a space with stunning views of Elizabeth House and St George's Tower?

That’s the crux of it for me. Demolish them both and have a lovely public square rather than two post-war eyesores there

Injured/convalescing soldiers from the 5th Northern General Military Hospital enjoying a little time out along Granby St...1914/18...The Hospital was located in the buildings on University Rd which had previously housed the Leicestershire Lunatic Asylum that had been built in 1837.By late 1880s the buildings were too small to cope so a new mental hospital had been built in Narborough. The old place remained empty until 1914 and with the outbreak of WW1 it became an army medical hospital. It was ideally situated just across the road from Victoria Park and a short distance from the railway station where thousands of wounded soldiers were to arrive during the conflict. It closed in 1919 and became home to The University of Leicester in 1921 which was founded as a memorial to the local men who gave their lives in the Great War...Today a flag flies above the 19th century building named after the fella that purchased it to be used as a seat of learning, Thomas Fielding Johnson, with the University of Leicester’s coat of arms: a red shield bearing two white flowers, a golden horse-shoe and an open book reading ‘ut vitam habeant’ – "That they shall have life"........

The tram network, we had better infrastructure in the 1880s than we do now.

Lay the railways on top of that and you could have a fully integrated transport system for the City and County as well as links to all corners of the Country.
