Arsenal's tactics were so weird, and their style of play is just so hard to process given how good they were under Wenger. Even under Emery, there was that game where they beat us 3-1 thanks to Ozil running the show where I have to begrudgingly admit they played wonderful football. The gist of it was that Ceballos and Xhaka played deep and wide to allow Tierney and Bellerin to push up safely. But they bypassed the centre of the pitch completely given that's where we packed our players.

 

It's just so weird seeing Arsenal with zero creative / technical players in their team. What happened to Fabregas, Bergkamp, Rosicky, Carzola, Ozil, Hleb,etc? At the same time WE had the creative players, Tielemans, Praet, Maddison, etc.

 

As a team and squad we've not just reached Arsenal's level, we've overtaken them! We can't spend 72m on a player like they did with Pepe, but Under already looks the better player. It is mental to think that in 2004 they went a season unbeaten with an incredible team and relegated us out of the top league for 10 long years. We even dipped into the third tier! Yet we've got all the way back, won the title before they did (!) and now look like for the second season in a row we will finish above them.

 

What has happened to our club is mental, and they way we are run is impeccable. Arsenal signed Saliba a year ago and still don't play him... we sign Fofana who is thrown straight into the first team and who pockets both Lacazette and Aubameyang. They sign Partey for 45m but Mendy who re-signs for free runs rings round him. I could go on and on. Craziness!

It highlights why Barnes was chosen instead of Iheanacho. With the set up we had, whoever was given the task of marking Partey had to be extremely disciplined otherwise the whole plan would’ve been undone. 
 

Vardy is probably instructed to do this more often than we realise, but the Arsenal fan’s analysis really did highlight it. They were always going to have chances, they have some quality in the side, but we forced them wide and what chances they did have (in the main), were half chances. 
 

Playing that way does have it’s draw backs. Although with some resolute defending, a bit of luck and a striker who only needs one or two opportunities, you always have a chance.

A really great win and a great defensive display.  The pass from Youri, the cross from Under and a fantastic header from Vardy.    I just love sending Arsenal fan tv into it’s almost weakly meltdown. 😜🦊. Vardy now level with Giggs on Premier League goals.

Yeah, just goes to show, you don't always see the bigger picture when you are watching live. I'll admit, at about the 35-40 minute mark, I was saying this system is not working, Barnes is completely anonymous in that role, we need to change it at half time. It had completely bypassed me that he had been asked to do a man marking job in that role on Partney, but watching this now it's clear as day and he actually stuck to it really well. This then allowed us to adapt to our 2nd half tactics, knowing Vardy would only be good for a 30 minute stint.

I think that goes to show how much trust Rodgers has in Barnes. I think Harvey's footballing intelligence may be a little bit under appreciated on here at times

Much like Vardy marking Rodri against Citeh, which I admit I didn't really appreciate until much later on, there's a game within the game going on.
