match day and match day 2 maybe or Emlyn Hughes international soccer?

TBH, it was so long ago, now, I really cannot remember which game it was.  (I know I had Football Manager 2, too.  And then I got an Amiga...)

My lads just asked me about subbuteo!

I've not played for 40 years and a quick search on ebay has left me mighty confused!!

All I want is the pitch ,a ball and a couple of teams for us to play.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please as I noticed some of you have some great collections going on.

The official Subbuteo licence has had a few changes over the years & been pretty much run into the ground - but you can still get official sets at e.g. Argos with a couple of teams, pitches & goals for £35. Its not the best quality and is a bit overpriced, but you do get everything you need in 1 box.

However, the game is as popular as ever, with the void filled by a lot of other companies who make high quality stuff - a good article about this is: https://subbuteo.online/did-we-kill-subbuteo-and-should-we-care

I've ended up buying my equipment from several places, but UK sites I've used include https://www.subbuteoworld.co.uk/ - good general site & https://www.lpm-online.co.uk/ - good for self-paint stuff.

If looking for new, my recommendation would be to either go for one of the boxed sets as it will get you going, or use the subbuteo world site as a one stop shop to order bit separately and it might not be much difference in price - you'd need: pitch, goals, balls & teams.

Things to look out for would be:

- rubber backed astropitches make a much better game than a cloth, but are expensive, so would depend on budget & expected use

- teams are mainly split between what type of bases with the more modern flatter bases or the older rounded bases. My old sets in the 80s were all rounded bases (Lightweights), but my new teams are modern flat bases (from lpm) which I think make a better game. You can really see the differences in bases on Subbuteo World & although I haven't got Zuego teams, reviews are that they are good figures, so would be a good place to start

- My first investment playing after 25 odd years was a fence - this made a massive difference when playing on a table to stop the ball constantly flying off

If looking for used, looking at the above sites & articles will give you a flavour of the sorts of names of the companies. But there are so many different companies out there that do sell the stuff, might just need to take a punt, but I wouldn't get hung up on the official subbuteo stuff.

(And if you really want to push the boat out, I could highly recommend a 5 a-side stadium https://shop.flickforkicks.com/product/indoor-stadium - which I bought for myself the kids for Christmas!)

I got all my old stuff from my parents a couple of years ago and just fancied an updated team, and went through the same... it took a bit of research to get my head around it, so happy to pass on what I found out.

Although one site I did find that does some really great stuff if you're looking for an unusual present or poster is

https://www.matthewjiwood.com/mugs/leicester-fa-cup?rq=Leicester

When I saw this, it was finally time for a new work mug!

As Golden Fox mentioned, the basic set that’s widely on sale ain’t great.Steer clear. The pitch and goals are crap.To add to Golden Foxes excellent information, tap in Table Football Monthly on YouTube.Sadly finished now but loads of material worth watching regarding Subbuteo.

In the process, spraying everywhere with your germs - but we were tough in them days.

We also had a magnetic football game. Here, the figures had magnets in the base and you used a small stick with a magnet on beneath the table, to move the players around.

Bit more than that . But it's great fun... Much quicker to set up, more goal action, no balls out of play, tactics of rebound shots and great service from FlickforKicks. Definitely has to be tried for any Subbuteo fan!
